Rage Grows in America: Anti‑Government Conspiracies

The Anti Defamation League goes all out to discredit popular Texas talk radio host and filmmaker Alex Jones:

With conspiracy talk-show host Alex Jones leading the way, one of the most disturbing trends in 2009 has been the resurrection and proliferation of some of the same anti-government conspiracy theories that so riled up domestic extremists in the 1990s. Such theories had been less popular in the 2000s, but Obama’s election gave anti-government conspiracy theorists a new focus for their efforts, a new light in which they could re-cast some of the old theories, and a willingness to come up with new conspiracies. More extreme than the “birther” conspiracy theory, these theories allege dark, violent designs on the part of the federal government.

Anti-Government Conspiracy Theories and Their Transmission

Though there are many conspiracy theories and numerous permutations, three are particularly entrenched among anti-government extremists:

  • Imposition of Martial Law. The federal government is plotting to declare martial law in the near future as a way to strip Americans of their freedoms and institute the New World Order. The government may utilize or even manufacture a crisis, such as the swine flu epidemic, in order to have an excuse for imposing martial law.
  • Gun Confiscation. The government is plotting to embark upon a massive program of gun confiscation, going door to door to take firearms away from American citizens so that they will be unable to resist the New World Order. Police, the military and even foreign troops may be used in the gun confiscation efforts.
  • FEMA Concentration Camps. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has constructed hundreds of concentration camps in the United States, designed to hold “dissidents” and other American citizens following some imminent crackdown such as a declaration of martial law.

    our government has done and planned some pretty horrible things,
    they made it pretty easy to believe some of the conspiracies, they used atomic weapons on civilians,
    performed lethal medical experiments on their own citizens (Tuskegee) mind control experiments on citizens(MK ULTRA) and planned terrorist attacks on the US populace to justify invasion of cuba(operation northwoods)
    it's our governments pact actions that lead many to think there is nothing to low for a fed to do.

    These people are either stupid or crazy or both. In 2001 the government was good. It was protecting us from the big bad terrorists. We had to give up our rights so we could be safe, remember? Anyone remember a little thing called the, uh, PATRIOT Act? Hello! In 2003 the government was good. It protected us from the big bad Saddam Insane, right? Yellow cake anyone? And what about those conspiracies? You know, the conspiracy to lie about weapons of mass destruction so we could go to war for no reason and thousands of American lives could be wasted. Or… what about the conspiracy to out a CIA agent? Scooter Libby ring a bell? Anybody? Torture? Kidnapping? Gulags? Hey! What about that conspiracy thing with, you know, the Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez. Hiring federal prosecutors based on their religious and political views? And all those billions of dollars in no-bid contracts to Halliburton? And…

    All I can say is, America deserves whatever government it gets. We earned it.

    I love these people that think the government will take away their guns. Guess what, you have something you can use to stop them.

      Yeeeaaaah… shooting at the government when they try to take away your guns. How do you imagine that's going to turn out?

      Think it over, I'll wait.

      No one (American) is going to literally fight the govt for their guns. When the govt wants the guns, they'll just take them. If they meet resistance, they'll loose their goons (cops) on us and we will relent. If we don't relent, they'll send in the military and *then* we'll relent. Americans aren't renown for throwing themselves onto grenades for a cause, and the American govt is not known for allowing internal rebellion on any level.

        I don't care how it turns out, I am not a gun owner, I just don't want to hear these rednecks tell me how the government is trying to take their guns. Like you said, when they want them they will come and get them. If they like their guns that much the government gave them another option. If these guys are half as tough as they act then it should not be a problem. I would applaud them if they did it, however, that is REALLY defending freedom.

          Well, I don't think someone concerned about a citizen's right to bear arms is automatically a redneck. Which people are you talking about? I'm not currently a gun owner, but I can empathize with the fear of the govt taking away my ability to defend myself.

          Also, I'm not sure I'd classify the ability to die a horrible death at the hands of the national guard a reasonable alternative to turning over their guns.

          “Gosh Mister G-Man, thanks for such a wide array of options. Maybe you'd like to tazer me and let your dogs loose on me while I think about it?”
