4chan: The Future Of Human Consciousness, A Drug, Or Just Filth?

Author Jason Louv (Generation Hex) argues in all seriousness that 4Chan is “our best preview of where human consciousness is going,” calling them a “freebased version of mankind’s new drug of choice…”

4Chan users are “the Magellans of media desensitization,” showing us “the chaos at the edge of human perception, where the mind has consumed so much information through artificially enhanced sensory inputs that it begins to break down and cannibalize itself.”

“The kaleidoscope of the Internet is more endless, more distracting and more mutating than even the most potent psychedelic drugs could have ever prepared us for,” and 4chan is “the ultimate, final trip,” as users “abandon the grim reality of their parents’ basements to wallow in infinite, recursively self-referential filth.”

If the internet will change the human experience, then 4Chan represents “a new frontier…the most interesting angle we have on the evolution of human consciousness.”

Or, to put it another way, “It is the car crash that cannot be looked away from. Ever.”

Car crash? That's not horrific enough.

    A car crash… with dead babies.:D

Amusingly enough, I stopped watching television because of the internet, and 4chan provided an area to debate political issues all the while hearing from the people who are still eating their force-fed propaganda.

If you don't like the truth being revealed like a car accident reveals whats inside a persons body, then you shouldn't lie in the first place.

That said, 4chan is nowhere as horrific as it used to be, and Mr. Louv should be 10 times as frightened by what “news” networks want him to believe.

  • Fed up with stupid people

You're a bunch of braindead idiots. Hope you all get into a car crash and die slowly =) You reap what you sow motherfuckers and you WILL learn it soon enough. This world will be a much better place after you've gotten seriously depressed and committed suicides, and hopefully you'll take your likewise retarded friends along the trip too :)

I agree with your arguments on many levels; however, I do not think that desensitization will necessarily lead to self-cannibalization. Perhaps the weak with the inability to fully adapt to this new form of consciousness will be pushed to the margins, caught in a rut of distasteful racist jokes and pictures of furry Pam Andersen’s tentacles/tits. However, I am pretty convinced that 4Chan is a site of possibility for a new civic participation— or should we say a mobilization of minds against the oppressive state of contemporary oligarchical civil society. I look at 4chan as a body of people concentrated on doing away with law and the control of the financial elite over the political sphere through very tailored and focused assaults on the pillars of the internet google, twitter, facebook, etc. This campaign is restricted to the realm of the internet, or is it? Time will tell. Limiting their ability to raise the fury of the oppressed, 4Chan is primarily accessed by a narrow slice of the human population— people with access to computers/ the internet. Many of the 4Chan population are also incredibly adept at using advanced internet and computer technologies. So, if we extend structural sociological theories to this assessment, 4Chan is statistically likely to be predominantly white men and therefore composed of an already privileged status-group. In order to bring about structural change, and potentially to ensure the survival of their community, 4Chan users must extend their human capital to disenfranchised populations.
