The Most Urgent Threat to World Peace Is … Canada

From Alternet:

When you think of Canada, which qualities come to mind? The world’s peace-keeper, the friendly nation, a liberal counterweight to the harsher pieties of its southern neighbor, decent, civilized, fair, well-governed? Think again. This country’s government is now behaving with all the sophistication of a chimpanzee’s tea party. So amazingly destructive has Canada become, and so insistent have my Canadian friends been that I weigh into this fight, that I’ve broken my self-imposed ban on flying and come to Toronto.

So here I am, watching the astonishing spectacle of a beautiful, cultured nation turning itself into a corrupt petrostate. Canada is slipping down the development ladder, retreating from a complex, diverse economy towards dependence on a single primary resource, which happens to be the dirtiest commodity known to man. The price of this transition is the brutalisation of the country, and a government campaign against multilateralism as savage as any waged by George Bush.

Until now I believed that the nation which has done most to sabotage a new climate change agreement was the United States. I was wrong. The real villain is Canada. Unless we can stop it, the harm done by Canada in December 2009 will outweigh a century of good works.

nope nope. I agree. We must let mr. o, through the EPA in america, declare CO2 a dangerous gas. Then we'll have to put a law on exhaling because we exhale CO2. and THEN all plant live will soon die when there is no more CO2 to sustain it's life.

you silly fuckers do not see that bush is just a player in the world of crooks just as mr. o is. they both would love to see this world govt come to fruition and for mr. o this whole climate nonsense is just the ticket…as it is to many other corrupt govts around the world

whatever your views on climate change, the shortsighted-ness of this plan should give you pause, and the fact that they are ignoring the toll it will take on the First Nation settlements is morally bankrupt.

Welcome to the big leagues, Canada!

This is probably one of the most terribly written articles I've seen in quite some time.
Oh no, poor little Canada with a population of of 33 million people is the big oger of Copenhagen. “a threat to world peace.” A bigger threat than a mass polluting country of 390 million operating 2 bogus wars at the same time for nothing more than their own gain and the very same country that is precipitating the downfall of the entire worlds economy.
Global warming is probably the biggest scare tactic that america has come up with since the words “Al Qaeda” Because a country of scared citizens will always be under the governments control. Thank god Canada has a leader than isn't afraid to tell tell the fearmongers to go fuck themselves.
This douche of a writer (if you can consider him that) has swallows the company line, hook line and sinker.
WHO GIVES A FUCK IF WE DON'T WANT TO MEET KYOTO PROTOCALLS. WE WILL STILL PRODUCE A MILLION TIMES LESS GREENHOUSE GASSES THAN ANY OTHER COUNTRY. MAYBE A BILLION TIMES LESS THAN WARMERICA.

The thing you should be talking about is the tar sands project in Ft. McMurry, northern Alberta. It is, by far the most environmentally destructive operation in the Americas, and the world, as far as I know. To give a sense of scale, its been called the largest industrial operation in history, the population of the boom towns around it have gone fom thousands to close to a million, and every tailing pond (there are hundreds) is as toxic as the old record holder for worst dump site in North America, the Sydney Tar Pond. Why is it important, why will it not be stopped, why is it not up for debate? Because Canada, American Ally and Buisness Partner, has more oil than Saudi Arabia, only its dirty as hell, impure, low grade, and requires much more procesing, producing much more waste. Doesn’t matter if Canada only has 33 milion people, the Tar Sands produce more CO2 than every car in America, and where do you think that gas is going to be coming from anyway? Locally and globally, one of the most destructive projects in the world.
