Aliens Are Likely To Look And Behave Like Us

Richard Alleyne reports for the Telegraph on a leading scientist who claims that alien life, if it exists at all, is likely to be just like us. He also believes aliens would also share our human weaknesses for greed, violence and the exploitation of others:

Professor Simon Conway Morris at Cambridge University will tell a conference on alien life that extraterrestrials will most likely have evolved just like “earthlings” and so resemble us to a degree with heads, limbs and bodies.

Unfortunately they will have also evolved our foibles and faults which could make them dangerous if they ever did visit us on Earth.

The evolutionary paleobiologist’s beliefs mean that science fiction films such as Star Wars and Star Trek could be more accurate than they ever imagined in depicting alien life.

Prof Conway Morris believes that extraterrestrial life is most likely to occur on a planet similar to our own, with organisms made from the same biochemicals. The process of evolution will even shape alien life in a similar way, he added.

“It is difficult to imagine evolution in alien planets operating in any manner other than Darwinian,” he said.

“In the end the number of options is remarkably restrictive. I don’t think an alien will be a blob. If aliens are out there they should have evolved just like us. They should have eyes and be walking on two legs.

“In short if there is any life out there then it is likely to be very similar to us.”

Extra-terrestrials might not only resemble us but have our foibles, such as greed, violence and a tendency to exploit others’ resources, claims Professor Conway Morris…

Is this like being made in God's image?

I think this gentleman may be a little fuzzy on how evolution works, however. (HINT: bipedal, bilateral symmetry may not be necessary for intelligence.)

Other people are assholes, aliens are probably dicks…I guess I'm going back to not leaving my house.

What tripe is this? C'mon. I'm supposed to consider what this guy says because he's a “professor”? What exactly could he possibly be basing his ideas on? Has he met an alien? I'd be far more interested if he said he had. I'll tell you what professor, I believe aliens will be in the shape of aerosol cans, speak in music, eat nothing but mud and live in giant mushrooms. And you know what? My belief is no more or less serious a proposal than yours. Why? Because WE HAVEN'T MET ALIENS YET! At least not publicly. So until the world governments come out and either admit aliens are here or until they come out of the sky and make their presence known for all to see, let's just keep any fictitious ideas or ridiculously underinformed thoughts about the nature of alien species to ourselves ok? Great. Thanks.

They appear on US television every Sunday morning. No not the televangelists, Last week was two of the poorer disguised ones Cokie Roberts and Sam Donaldson.

Nearly all the intelligent races in Star Trek were humanoid. This professor must be correct…
I'll bet he knows how to tie his own shoes pretty good too….

With the same amount of evidence as this “professor” I shall prove that aliens do NOT look like us but are in fact bipedal cephlaopods. I saw a documentary once that showed that evolution could have just as easily resulted in bipedal, land walking, enormous squids. IMHO the intelligent cephlapods are already on earth and live in an undersea city called R’lyeh.
However the “aliens”, or Star Spawn as they like to be called, do not share our human weaknesses for greed, violence and the exploitation of others but actually exceed it to an incredible degree beyond what humans could ever conceive and retain their sanity. Also they don’t consider it a weakness, they just consider it good eating.
