For $65, Tourists Get Peek at Los Angeles Gangland

SFGate reports:

Only miles from the scenic vistas and celebrity mansions that draw sightseers from around the globe — but a world away from the glitz and glamour — a bus tour is rolling through the dark side of the city’s gang turf.

Passengers paying $65 a head Saturday signed waivers acknowledging they could be crime victims and put their fate in the hands of tattooed ex-gang members who say they have negotiated a cease-fire among rivals in the most violent gangland in America.

You can take a similar tour on the Metro Line 40 for $1.25, and you don't have to sign any waivers because most likely the community won't feel they are being exploited by public transportation users, and so they have no reason to want to kill you.

I'm not sure how I feel about this, but I know that if a giant luxury coach full of tourists came rolling through my neighborhood to get a single-serving view of local crime and poverty, I don't think I would be pleased.

Anyone that wants to treat this sort of environment like some sort of zoo deserves whatever bad thing may happen to them on their little “tour” of these neighborhoods. The people collecting money for this should die, as well. The very least that should happen is that the money go to the neighborhoods or into some kind of public works or community programs. And this is coming from a corny white dude.

  3. maybe if more of them started thinking outside of they're current situation they wouldn't be stuck in a dead end their whole lives, but i'm sure the simple minded thuggish behavior you guys are suggestion will help…..
