Jay Reatard Dead At 29

Modern-day garage rock wunderkind Jay Reatard has just died in his sleep in his home at age 29.

An underground sensation and cult hero in Memphis since his teens, Reatard had just recently begun to get more mainstream attention, as evidenced by a lengthy and fairly silly profile in the New York Times this past summer.

He leaves behind a large body of recordings, as well as a reputation involving excessive drug use, stage antics and violence at shows, and feuds with other artists. If you haven’t heard his abrasive, punk-inspired music, now’s a good time to take a listen…he always lived up to his name.

Yeah, this news isn't terribly surprising.

Sucks for his family/friends/fans, but self-destruction was on his agenda and he was apparently successful.

Okay, so I just went and listened to him. I can't say that I am impressed. I'm not trying to go on bashing someone after they have died, I did quite enough of that when Michael Jackson died, I mean, do yo believe for one second that the kids he tried to seduce automatically changed their minds about him after he died? Actually, they might have, everyone else got on that bandwagon pretty fast. Look, all that I am saying is that when a good musician dies I might care. Tell me when Opeth dies, sadly the best musicians often go largely unrecognized.

Jay Reatard, what a great name for a Rock and Roll grungy-punk- dude. Did the band ride in a “special education” bus? I have no idea who this guy was, but too bad you died at 29.
    Bogus Man….

That is scary, this is the 2nd musician(Rev from A7X too)under 30 to die from “natural causes” in their sleep. What are these people dying from? (if not too much dope?)
