Bill Nye: Climate Change Skeptics “Unpatriotic”

Most children of the nineties have fuzzy memories of Emmy-winning scientist Bill Nye the Science Guy, creator and host of a beloved educational television program of the same name that was [is?] shown in middle school science classes across the nation.

On Wednesday, Nye got tough when he appeared on Rachel Maddow’s MSNBC show, stating twice that climate change deniers are “unpatriotic.”

For young adult climate skeptics, it must hurt to have a childhood icon emerge ghostlike from the past to call you an anti-American.

I disagree with climate skeptics but Bill Nye is kind of an idiot. See: Bill Nye's moronic attempts at debunking the UFO phenomenon.

  • tonyzzz

Just another paid off douche bag to sway the minds of the public! Suck it bill

    • tonyviner

Explain. Explain to me how he is wrong about what he says. Please.

Once again, the falsification of factual data as has been brought to light by Climategate is completely overlooked. Recently, Bob Jones of the IPCC admitted that there has been no significant warming since 1995. This has nothing to do with recent snow falls, this is the factual record of the last 15 years. He also admitted the the Medieval Warming period as well as the decade of the 1930's were probably warmer than today's temps and that both of these items were left off of the famous 'hockey stick' graph. It's time for the liberals like Rachel Maddow to actually be liberal by looking at both sides of the argument not just one.

    • ScouseBilly

It was (Prof,) Phil Jones ex-head of the CRU actually but I agree with your post.
It's not only UEA's CRU and Penn State that have been promoting this political agenda and quelling dissenting good scientists but also NASA: http://www.examiner.com/x-32936-Seminole-County

I am in London, England and can tell you our MSM are finally waking up to the scam. A pity that most of your (US) media are still silent. Wake up America.

    • 5by5

We HAVE looked at both sides.

And climate change deniers are like evolution deniers. All hat, no cattle.

Richard Dawkins would react to the evolution deniers with something along the lines of, “Well let's see, is there some infinitesimal possibility that the giant preponderance of evidence that we've found that supports evolutionary theory is all wrong? Yes. But until you can bring me a rabbit from the Pre-Cambrian Era, I'm sticking with Darwin.”

Climate change deniers are similar in that they look at rightwing reports ABOUT these few emails (while not reading the emails themselves) which mostly are reputable scientists simply trying to figure out how to keep Exxon-pain shills from muddling up rational scientific discussions with JUNK science, while completely ignoring the myriad of research from over a hundred other countries and thousands of scientists and research organizations that aren't corporate hacks, who all agree — CONCLUSIVELY — that extreme climate change is happening, and that it is significantly man-made.

MAN HAS BECOME A FORCE OF NATURE that is causing not just radical temperature shifts, but the mass extinctions of 4/5ths of the species on the planet at a rate which the Earth cannot compensate for this quickly.

      • FergalR

You ignorant moron. How dare you insult the victims of the Holocaust by linking their murders to the self-evident AGW scam.

The scientists who support AGW are the corporate hacks. They are the ones funded by big oil. It's in their fucking accounts for anyone with eyes to see.

It's a scam. If you had the intelligence to examine the evidence you'd see that yourself.

        • tonyviner

It is important to remember that when you agree with idiots you end up looking like a bigger idiot. Fool!

        • 5by5

“The scientists who support AGW are the corporate hacks. They are the ones funded by big oil.”

          Um, NO.

Actually the exact opposite is true, and has been for years. Exxon began a disinfo campaign (which apparently suckered you quite successfully) through their astroturf “Global Climate Coalition” and a bunch of other front groups like “Frontiers of Freedom” that are modeled on the propaganda methods used by the Tobacco industry.

In fact, they literally hired many of the same people responsible for that campaign which the Tobacco Lobby ran back when the science first came out about cigarettes causing cancer. They wanted to try to muddle the discussion about catastrophic climate change with the same techniques the cigarette folks used back in the day.

          To quote Brown & Williamson:

“Doubt is our product, since it is the best means of competing with the ‘body of fact’ that exists in the minds of the general public. It is also the means of establishing a controversy.”

          Read all about it here:

          Pages 31-36 are particularly enlightening.

Please educate yourself. Your children are going to have to try to survive in the wasteland you're providing to them.

Nye is a terrible communicator and a worse arguer. I find it amazing that he had his own show once. But then, so did Anna Nicole Smith.

  • http://drewt333.blogspot.com/ drewt333

Glacial observation alone is enough to indicate a change in climate. Patriotism only enters play because the Federal government long ago jumped from the “All men are created equal/ rule of the people” camp to the “All animals are created equal, but some animals are more equal than others” camp and turned a natural event into an excuse to write laws for other countries to follow, and (incidentally) extort more money from their constituents.
    That's unpatriotic!

  • 5by5

A failure to understand the serious threat climate change offers isn't unpatriotic, just stupid.

Even the Pentagon recognizes the problems that will be inherent in mass migrations due to drought, lack of clean water, or extreme weather events.

It only becomes unpatriotic to the extent that someone is unwilling to help protect this country from the adverse effects by clinging to voluntary ignorance and mythical thinking, even at the expense of their fellow countrymen.

And since many wingnutty Tea Party types are that self-absorbed, then yeah, I guess maybe they are unpatriotic.
But bill Nye does a “feh” job of making that argument concisely.

    • FergalR

Your failure to understand that you are stupid enough to swallow the lies that are being shoved down everyone's throats is tragic. That you denigrate those mature enough to see that we're all being lied to is unforgivable.

Bill Nye looks like a nonce. If his claims to be an educator are true I hope to God that he doesn't have unsupervised access to children.

  • GoodDoktorBad

The end of the world is Nye….he he!

  • Polymorpheous

wonder why everyone is talking about climate change, and no one speaks of pollution?

  • tonyviner

Personally I believe that climate change is partially man-made, though not entirely. No matter how you look at it though, it is important to realize that we treat our planet like shit and a lot of it is done in the name of corporate greed. People get sick plants become extinct and animals die everyday because of the things we do to the planet. Instead of banding together like we should we let the people in charge come up with phony solutions like cap and trade while we sit around arguing with each other over whether or not Al Gore is right or wrong.

“Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy.” – Dale Carnegie

“I never worry about action, but only about inaction” – Winston Churchill

It is up to us to decide the fate of our planet and the things that live on it, not the moneyed interests that control every other aspect of our lives.

Bill Nye is right. It is unpatriotic in a sense to deny climate change (global warming) if only for the simple reason that in opposing this theory they are doing a great disservice to the people of this country (U.S.A! U.S.A.! Right guys?) and the people of the world.

calling someone unpatriotic is like calling someone hitler,
it just proves you got nothin.
