Nothing On T.V. Is Real: The Ubiquity Of Green Screens

This fascinating video reel shows the extent to which today’s scripted television shows are based around green screens. When Ugly Betty waits for the bus on a New York street corner, she’s actually standing in a green box. T.V. is even less real than you thought.

I have long advocated that the broadcasters be required by the FCC to display a watermark in the corner of videos which purport to be “live” but are digitally manipulated. Events like the 2000 CBS New Years Eve broadcast, sporting events and other manipulated feeds.

Broadcasters have no problem watermarking videos for their marketing purposes, so they can hardly argue that doing so for the benefit of the public is somehow too distracting and unaesthetic.

Yeah, and I’m getting tired of every damned thing being shot in Vancouver too.

We’ve got a lot of American crew here at home that need the work. If you’re going to make a show that takes place in America, frickin’ shoot it here, or if you must green screen it, green screen it in Hollywood.
