Watkins bookshopFor anyone interested in esoteric and occult books, one of the very finest shops in the world is London’s Watkins Books. For those of you with deep pockets, please dig deep and buy the business out of bankruptcy/administration. From The Bookseller:

London’s oldest esoteric bookshop and Cecil Court ‘institution’ Watkins Books has gone into administration with 11 members of staff losing their jobs.

The bookshop, which was founded in 1897 and moved to Cecil Court in 1901, closed down yesterday (23rd February), following the appointment of administrator Harris Lipman. A sign displayed on the shop’s window read: “Shop Closed Today”.

Tim Bryars, secretary of the Cecil Court Association, told The Bookseller that it had “taken everybody by surprise”. It is understood that trading had been slower than usual, for a number of reasons including increased online competition and the bad weather. The company was hit by a Capital Gains Tax bill of £500,000, which it had been appealing against.

The landlord Gasgoyne Holdings and administrator are now attempting to find a buyer for the business. Bryars urged any interested parties to get in touch.

“The landlord is keen to keep Watkins alive and here in Cecil Court,” he said. “We hope a buyer will be found to keep the shop here. . . We think it could be bought as a viable going concern.” Bryars, who described Watkins as “a Cecil Court Institution”, added: “On the sentimental side, we feel Watkins is part of the history of the street.”…

They probably should have invested in some Bibles.

Considering that the most shoplifted book in the world is the bible, the answer to your glib statement is , No.

Watkins went down hill since the 80s spreading themselves too thin around the esoteric, taking in all kinds of crud from cat tarot to past lives with angels. It's a far cry from their initial imprints which dealt with occult and esoteric translations bringing the profane to a wider audience through populist printings and more studiously benefitial print considerations for the learned. The wishy washy new age band wagon jumping has inevitably bit them on the arse. It's a pity as the historical and practical implications of this shop are tremendous and would be a brilliant historical investment and a chance to own a piece of living history, a brilliant springboard for future imprints, publications etc..

The Bible, a book of lies written by men to manipulate the masses and conceal the suns passage throughout its annual cycle. Also if the bible is so squeeky clean why does the vatican house the biggest occult library in the world !

Can we get back to the topic of the news item for just a moment? Regardless of whether Watkins sells bibles or car maintenance manuals the truth of the matter is that yet another independent bookstore has bitten the dust due to the might of the giants like Amazon.
