Coca-Cola Intimidates Student Group Over Film Screening

What can make a giant tremble? When a penniless student group gets a threat from New York lawyers — in this case, Coca-Cola’s lawyers — on account the students want to show a film condemning human rights abuses, the optics suggest that the giant has something to hide. ‘Screening truth to power’, it seems, has its consequences.

Earlier this month, Coke threatened legal action to prevent the screening of a new documentary film The Coca-Cola Case. The $141 billion company (with annual revenues of $28 billion) threatened a small non-profit media-arts group called Cinema Politica which shows documentary films for free at Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec and through a network of independent locals across Canada, in the United States, and in Europe and Latin America.

    Those crazy Columbians- fighting for a job at a company that kills you because they can't just fire you openly.

    The last time I heard anything on this subject was about 5 years ago. I don't care for coca cola products, never have.I especially can't stand the sound of a bottle or can being opened and then a beverage being poured out into a glass. Used twice in this video and both times it's makes me want to pull my fucking teeth out. Completely unrelated to their cause here but I had to get that out.

    You know, if you’re really going to look at this, you need to also look closely at John McCain’s role in his “International Republican Institute” (not to mention the National Endowment for Democracy and USAID – whose organizational titles are beginning to be as Orwelian as Bush’s “Healthy Forests Initiative” which promoted clearcutting trees in our national parks) and their participation in death squad activity in the country. McCain is up to his neck in the rightwing dictatorship down there, and unfortunately, these union leaders are far from the only ones getting ganked in Columbia. (The IRI also had a role in destabilizing the democratically-elected gov’t of Jean Bertrand-Aristide in Haiti.)

    That country has al the proto-typical models of economic and political disruption that have been at work in Latin America since the overthrow of the democratically elected government of Guatemala by the CIA. It’s a pattern, people. This is simply our economic hitmen at work on behalf of the corporate American oligarchy.

    And it’s DISGUSTING.
