The World’s Only Immortal Animal

Bryan Nelson of the Mother Nature Network writes via Yahoo Green:

The turritopsis nutricula species of jellyfish may be the only animal in the world to have truly discovered the fountain of youth.

Since it is capable of cycling from a mature adult stage to an immature polyp stage and back again, there may be no natural limit to its life span. Scientists say the hydrozoan jellyfish is the only known animal that can repeatedly turn back the hands of time and revert to its polyp state (its first stage of life).

The key lies in a process called transdifferentiation, where one type of cell is transformed into another type of cell. Some animals can undergo limited transdifferentiation and regenerate organs, such as salamanders, which can regrow limbs. Turritopsi nutricula, on the other hand, can regenerate its entire body over and over again. Researchers are studying the jellyfish to discover how it is able to reverse its aging process.

I imagine there's money to be made in them there cells.

Although I find this a truly amazing natural phenomenon. I'm not sure why there is such a fascination with people wanting to live forever. It must be connected to our inability to deal with loss of any kind and that fact we want to solve the obvious problem that arises when you have more money than you can spend in a life time.

The only permanence is impermanence. Get over it. You will be bored for sure if you lived for ever and bored for ever is a long time.

If one could live forever, I think they'd only end up bored if they outlived the entire human race (and that would be horrible and not much of a life at all).
I think old people are only bored because they can't do shit and they're basically waiting to die.
But if you could stay maybe in your 20's and healthy forever, you'd see a lot of exciting shit and have a great time!
For example, I'm 29 and in poor internal-health on account of an alcohol abuse problem years ago. But if I had the health that I did at 22 and could live forever.. I would have an awesome time of debauchery again that could literally last forever! …Which would be nice.. lol

if you can live forever, why not?

Didn't Freddie Mercury teach you anything through song?

      • Hadrian999

Just shows that the bible and the quran are written by people and not by any god/s because they both state nothing is immortal on earth but only in heaven.

When we look at molecular level of biology we know that telomerase (an enzyme) that has adapted the ability to rebuild telomeres in the likes of cancer/stem cells, which enables them to replicate an infinite number of times.

when all d water dries up. they will die too.

      • Nunya99999999

Jessica, the article doesn’t state that the jellyfish couldn’t be killed. Rather, the premise is that if they are left alone, and their natural environment continues as such, they can live forever.

    • Zimbo

How many cells do these fish got. At moleculear level i think replication can be infinite but as the system interacts, other processes are afected.

You are an intellectual idiot. The Bible does not say that at all! By the way, you are quick to give credit to a MAN who wrote this article than to the Bible which has proven itself to be inspired of God. If you were alive then, you probably would have been one of the insolent ones who had Jesus put to death. What a shame.

      • aaron

how has the bible “proven” itself to be inspired of God… or anything for that matter. Not trying to bash Christianity, its meant to be based upon faith and belief rather than proof and fact. Get your facts straight if you really believe. Plus we are all created in Gods image. Thus the MAN who wrote this article, a reflection of God himself deserves just as much credit as anyone else. That is if you believe in the christian value of loving everyone equally as you love yourself, and bearing compassion not blame for your neighbor.

see how immortal they are when i eat em with some sushi

The Bible and the Quran maybe be written by men but men used by GOD HIMSELF.. When people say God can do all things, I tell 'em there things God Can't do and WILL NEVER DO !
He cannot tell lies, steal, nor any evil of such …
When the Bible stated that nothing lives forever,it mean everything will come to halt ! Every living thing will come to an end when that last day is upon earth .. Believe it or Not Bro, it can't be all lies …okay ?
God Has done those wonders to glorify HIS NAME

Which is insane and egotistical. A being that has made its entire purpose to glorify itself doesn’t seem a little beyond fucked up to you?

Well hello to you too, Satan.

Maybe he doesn’t lie but he deceives and manipulates, which i feel is worse. But everyone is flawed so its OK for the creator to be imperfect. If he was perfect sin would never have come into the game, he perfection would have developed beings beyond it.

Your really stupid. The jellyfish is NOT immortal. Dumbass.

What about hydras? Those little tiny water borne creatures? I thought it was possible that they could reach technical immortality as well.
