Universe Expansion ‘is Speeding Up’

This article brings up a question of philosophy.  If there is a some vast, dark force at the center of the universe which is speeding us toward oblivion, what does that say about “God?”

From The Hindu:

Astronomers have claimed that the expansion of the universe is accelerating, after studying thousands of galaxies using the Hubble Space Telescope.

In its research, an international team has analyzed nearly 446,000 galaxies to map the matter distribution and the expansion history of the universe, proving again that Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity is indeed correct.

And the astronomers clearly found that the universe was indeed growing faster and faster with time, as predicted by Einstein.

“Our results confirmed that there is an unknown source of energy in universe which is causing the cosmic expansion to speed up, stretching the dark matter further apart exactly as predicted by Einstein’s theory,” lead astronomer Ludovic Van Waerbeke of Leiden University in the Netherlands said.

Einstein’s theory of general relativity predicts that space and time is a soft geometrical structure of which the shape and evolution are entirely determined by the matter within it.

According to the astronomers, the universe is composed of dark matter and normal matter with third constituent called “dark energy”, which over the past two billion years has been the force behind the accelerated expansion of the universe.

“The data from our study are consistent with these predictions and show no deviation from Einstein’s theories,” Van Waerbeke said.

Van Waerbeke pioneered a technique to measure the invisible web of dark matter which was used in the study.

really amazing fact. truly the universe is amazing and naturally beauitful.

It doesn't say anything about “God” one way or the other. Perhaps if you really insist, it might suggest that our small-minded, Judeo-Christian concept of “God” may be misguided.

The only thing it says anything about is our Universe. I'm not even sure there's any sort of need to turn this into a theological discussion. This is why Atheism is just as much of a religion as, well…religion…..

Dark matter is just a name for something we don't know anything about it might be made out of millions of things

It says all things that have a beginning, have an end. But since universes are constantly being born, dying and being reborn anew just like we are, trust that everything old will be new again… sooner or later.

It also says the only thing more improbable than the universe itself, is a God existing outside of time and space creating it. Because then you have to address the problem of causality with regards to God itself. Soon you're in a chicken and egg loop, and after a while, that just gets boring.

As does rebirth itself. Which is why some of us just say, “Stop this crazy samsaric merry-go-round, I want to get the hell off.”

the mortal coil is awesome, new highs and lows,
loves and hates, mystery and tragedy, why would you want to get off?

It does not suggest that “the only thing more improbably than the universe itself, is a God existing outside of time and space creating it”. How can it suggest that? No offense, but your logic stinks. What if God exists in the same time and space (and matter?) of the universe? Hell, a caveat like that doesn't even need to be thought up. Technically, dark matter has nothing to do with what may or may not be outside of time and space, because, well…IT WOULD BE OUTSIDE TIME AND SPACE.

Furthermore, the “problem of causality” as you refer to it, becomes more of a problem with the Universe, because, if there is a “God” it seems more likely that this God would be an uncaused first-cause than the materialist universe. In short, it seems more than likely that a God would spring from nothing than a Universe. Especially since the logic of our space-time based universe says that something absolutely cannot come from nothing. If this was so, then people who believe the “Gurus” who manifest entire meals from their shirt sleeves wouldn't be as absolutely batshit crazy as they are.

I've heard about this before and it kinda scares me. Are there any guesstimates as to how much time we have left?

    C. And Rethink The Universe

By the presently available data our universe is a dual-cycle array.

One cycle, the present, started from singularity, with all cosmic energy in mass format, and it has been proceeding to reconvert all the mass resolved at the big bang back to energy, by expanding the cosmos, by accelerating away the galaxy clusters.

The other cycle, the cycle that led to singularity, will re-start when the expanding cosmos consumes most or all mass that fuels the expansion. Gravity will then initiate reconversion of all the energy back to mass, to singularity, again.
