Who Funds the Radical Left In America?

Steve Baldwin for the Western Center for Journalism:

Very few Americans realize there exists a large network of far left philanthropists and foundations in America dedicated to destroying the American way of life, our Christian-based culture and our free enterprise system.  They seek to remove America from its constitutional foundations and move it toward a European-style socialism.  Much of this effort is coordinated by a little known group called the Tides Foundation and its related group, the Tides Center.

The Strategic Principles of the Tides Foundation

The Strategic Principles of the Tides Foundation

Over the course of its 33 year history, the Tides network has given hundreds of millions of dollars to anti-free enterprise groups, gun control groups, anti-private property groups, abortion rights groups, homosexual groups, groups engaged in voter fraud, anti-military groups, and organizations that seek to destroy America’s constitutional basis. All told, over 100 leftist organizations have received funding from one of the two Tides groups.

Not surprisingly, this network of anti-American groups played a key role in electing Barack Obama by using classic propaganda techniques in making false allegations about Bush (he lied regarding WMDs, he stole the election in Florida, he knew in advance about 9/11, etc, etc.) and created the impression that Bush and by extension, the GOP, was corrupt.  Obama, of course, was portrayed as the reformer who would save America from this corruption.

Millions of Americans fell for this mythology and so without being openly partisan, this vast network of far left groups, along with its media allies, was able to manipulate American public opinion during the last election cycle.  Meanwhile, anyone who tried to reveal Obama’s real agenda, his role in the corrupt Chicago political machine, his socialist political associations, or his soft spot for Middle Eastern terrorists was labeled a kook by this same network.

The amount of funding the Tides Foundation and Tides Center provides the hard left is unprecedented. Indeed, its financial disclosures show that the Tides Center has raised between $48 and $71 million each year since 1998 and the bulk of this revenue is contributed back to far left groups. The closely-aligned Tides Foundation has reported revenues of between $59 and $77 million every year since 2002.  The two tax exempt groups are supposed to be non-partisan, but they are certainly extremely political and they push the envelope regarding what non-profit groups are allowed to do politically.   All together, both Tides groups have contributed over $500 million to the organized left.

The list of hard-left causes is long and there is not enough space to review them all.  But here’s a brief review of a few of them…

    total crap article

  • nick__nick

    good parody

    • Eco

Would that this were a parody. That organization's owned by the guy who runs WorldNetDaily

  • emperorreagan

I wish there were left wing extremist groups successfully moving the United States closer to European socialism. I would like a 32 hour work week instead of a 60 hour work week, please.

    • Polymorpheous

I don't suppose you've heard the quote, ” a government big enough to give you everything, is big enough to take it all away”?

I'll keep my civil liberties. I no fan of total government control.

BTW: most european governments are considered republics or parliamentary republics with a few constitutional monarchies to make things interesting.

      • emperorreagan

The United States is a constitutional republic and so is France. What bearing does that have on anything? How you choose to organize your government and your economy are two separate issues.

I also don't understand how the means through which the government influences the economy affects your personal civil liberties.

        • Polymorpheous

what i meant is these nation states are not true socialist states. this is yet another example of the corporate brainwashing our nation suffers from. what america thinks socialism is and what it really is are 2 different things. lets move beyond the black and white, polarized thinking that seems to run amok in this country. real life has lots of gray.

          • emperorreagan

It would certainly add clarity to the debate if we spoke in terms of mixed economies and stopped throwing around the terminology that doesn't reflect the realities of our economies. However, people are seldom that precise with their terminology…especially when using particular terminology plays into long-cultivated societal fears.

          • Polymorpheous

“especially when using particular terminology plays into long-cultivated societal fears.”

these fears go way back. keep in mind how many americans died because of those fears.
and for reasons most don't understand. we are spoon fed half truths to keep us in fear and in compliance.
you can thank our televisions and our schools for that.

now don't get me wrong. just because i don't agree with marxist ideas of a socialist utopia, doesn't mean i'm all for american imperialism. or even the fascist state that the left is so scared of.

            (not directed @ emperor)
people on this blog are making a lot of assumptions about my political leanings since the blog has joined with the disqus community. i want to get some stuff straight. i'm hip to individual responsibility, for freedom to do what ever the hell i want. your rights don't trump my rights and vice-a-versa. i know all of you guys that don't have disinfo profiles take a quick glance at my avatar and think i'm some kind of wingnut. (i'm making a generalization of course.) take a closer look at said avatar. i don't like getting caught up in this polarized political nonsense. i'm a civil libertarian and have never voted democrat and republican in my life. (although i did vote green party once.) chances are i don't like your party, or their party.

      • ebwolf

Civil Liberties have already been taken. It's called the Patriot Act.

        • Polymorpheous

          you're preaching to the choir.

          • ebwolf

My Bad. When you said “keep my civil liberties,” I took it to mean you were of the impression they were still in effect.

      • janedoe_tcm

So I guess you won't mind refusing social security and medicare when you hit the eligible age? And government unemployment if you lose your job? And of course, you won't take advantage of the socialized police, fire, and educational services provided by the government. You're probably stuck with the publicly funded roads, I guess…no real alternatives, there.

        • Polymorpheous

so i guess you won't mind rereading my post, as you obviously didn't understand it.
true socialist states exists. they are not nice states. marxist ideals are just as easily corrupted as our democratic ideals.
what the mainstream media and your favorite or least favorite politician calls socialism is real socialism.

    • Iamaguest

I spent a month in Denmark a few years ago. 50% of everyones income went to the government. The people living there must have been heavily brainwashed because they didn't seem to mind, most even considered it fair. Most of them seemed very happy *despite* the fact that they were guaranteed an education and healthcare for life. On the whole the majority were very politically aware on both the local and global level, and voter turn out averaged over 80%. I assume this was some kind of state distortion, because we all know that in truly free countries like the united states apathy and disengagement are the norm. I kept trying to tell them that they were being oppressed by their government and that their civil rights were being taken away, but they all kept insisting that for all intents and purposes, their government was far less oppressive than my own, that drug use and prostitution were decriminalized to the point of virtually being legal, that they were the first country in the world to legalize same sex marriage, that 40% of their government officials were women, and that racial and sexual discrimination was simply not tolerated either in the government, the workplace, or among society at large. Less than 1% of the population was in prison. Crime was much lower and true poverty and homelessness were almost non-existent. Truly, it was a dystopian nightmare.

      • 5by5

Yeah. And you know what their taxes buy?

        C-I-V-I-L-I-Z-A-T-I-O-N.

        And fracking health care!

This is part of why they're happy. They're healthy. And rational.

Yes, clearly, those poor Danes are burdened. :-)

    • Kenlc

If you like the European system so much why don't you move there!!!
I am sure you will not be missed!

this is a bunch of right wing propaganda BULLSHIT! this man is a brainwashed moron who doesn't know shit. he is the type of person the gov't wants us to be! fuck that! and fuck him!

  • GWF Hegel

the government as it stands has already accumulated the power to give whatever a government can give, and take away most of what a government can take away. this is fine with corporate shills like the author of this article, as long as the power is not used against corporate interests. of course, he wants his family values anti-abortion anti-gay stuff respected, too, but the portrayal of new deal socialism as anti-liberty is pure disinformation. it's vital that we're all clear on this.

  • http://lovewithoutsound.tumblr.com/ adam

I wouldn't really call many of those groups radical.

  • ebwolf

Is this article written by Steve Baldwin the D-list actor, or a completely different propaganda spewing, corporate cock-sucking, christian revisionist?

  • http://disinfo.com Majestic

Good call nick_nick, that's why I threw up this story with no editorial comment, to see who would pick up on the way that this so-called “Western Center for Journalism,” which is really just the author's blog, is – intentionally or not – a brilliant parody of the right's rhetoric about all sorts of progressive causes.

I really think it's important that we expose ourselves to the propaganda being disseminated from all along the political spectrum, and this piece by Steve Baldwin is quite revealing on what a certain extreme end of that spectrum is saying.

  • name name

This isn't the first time pro-status quo propaganda has ended up on the disinfo site.

This is simply not what it's for.

Just because “Colbert Report” fans might think it's funny doesn't excuse promoting it.

  • ThirdSection

Tides Center, huh? Sign me up!!!!

  • ebwolf

Try comparing this piece of, ahem, journalism to any of Joe McCarthy's speeches during the Red Menace scare.
It's as if Mr. Baldwin used a template.

  • 5by5

This would be the stupid Baldwin brother, right? Boy, Alec really DID get all the brains. :-)

    A few points:

1.) Liberals are not “anti-free enterprise”, they are pro small business, and pro-FAIR enterprise.

2.) Liberals are not anti-private property. Period. He just pulled that one directly out of his bum.

3.) There are no “groups engaged in voter fraud”. The phenomenon of voter fraud (an individual intentionally voting twice, or voting at the wrong polling place, etc.) is so statistically small as to be completely irrelevant. In fact the only person I can think of who's actually be prosecuted for engaging in it, is Ann Coulter. ELECTION fraud on the other hand, that IS quite prevalent. That's when a political party or candidate or their subgroups intentionally do things like:

    - tear up the voter registrations of the other side, or
    - program an electronic voting machine to flip votes to their candidate, or
    - phone jamming the call centers of their opponents headquarters, or
    - robo-calling people and spreading lies about where they are to go to vote,
    - putting flyers in minority communities who tend to vote against you telling them the day of the vote has been changed, or
    - parking police officers near voting areas to intimidate minorities from voting, or
    - sending the final vote tally to a server owned by your party prior to counting the votes, or,
    - kicking 70,000 people off the voting roles.

All of which the Republicans have systematically engaged in. That's why they've been under Federal injunction since the 1980's for engaging in that kind of crappy behavior.

4.) Liberals are anti-war. That does not make them anti-military, and it ESPECIALLY wouldn't make them anti-soldier

5.) If you want to find an “organization that seeks to destroy America’s constitutional basis” you need go no further than the Republican Party, and any corporatist DINO that helps them for that. And neither one of them are “Liberal”.

And William Kunstler, who's pictured in that rightwing screed, is a Constitutional Lawyer who did things like defend comedian Lenny Bruce, spoke on behalf of both Martin Luther King and Malcolm X as a civil rights attorney, defended the American Indian Movement against FBI harassment after Wounded Knee & Pine Ridge, worked for the Gandhi Society, defended the Freedom Riders in Mississippi, defended the Chicago Seven from persecution for the “crime” of protesting, and represented conscientious objectors during the Gulf War.

Along with those good people, he also represented some real shits, like Sheikh Omar Abdel-Rahman, and El-Sayyid Nosair, because in this country, even these guys are innocent until PROVEN guilty, and deserve a vigorous defense. They deserve that, not because they are good men, but because WE ARE. Because that simple act of fairness is what makes us BETTER than places like Saudi Arabia or Iran.

To grasp just how important this man was to helping YOU keep what few free speech rights you have, even “The Dude” in the Big Lebowski demanded to be represented by William Kunstler when he got in trouble, man…. :-)

If you'd like to know more about him I'd recommend watching the movie, “William Kunstler: Disturbing the Universe” (2009)

  • Global Citizen

How can you read this dribble, and why is it twice as long as most stories linked from the homepage. Just because they hold a different view doesn't make them anti-American, you bitching about them having a different view makes you that.

  • http://tcandm.wordpress.com/ janedoe_tcm

Funny, because nearly all the left-wing extremist groups I've ever worked with or marched alongside have been dirt broke and maintained mostly by volunteer efforts. Oh, sure, there are a few high-profile groups, like the ACLU, who attract a fair amount in donations (though apparently never enough judging from the amount of e-mail I get from them), but most such organizations are small and sustained by the energy of a few devoted individuals and donations from their own members. Of course, that's purely anecdotal, so I suppose YMMV…

  • Godisimaginary

This article lost all forms of credibility when it stated we are a xtian based culture.

  • Synapse

Forget left or right, it's obvious that this article has a few grains of truth. Why? Because all political movements will lie and distort to get you to buy their BS. It's especially scary how much funding “liberal” colleges are getting from places like Saudi Arabia to make sure their “intellectually open” textbooks will not criticize the Muslim way of life. I've seen text books which go on for pages about women's rights and how women have no rights in the bible, then suddenly talk about how Muslims have a near ideal family structure and sexuality. This was not even in a class that had anything to do with Islam, it was human sexuality. There are plenty of groups that have no problem lying to the left to get them to promote things they themselves would have nothing to do with if they didn't get money out of it. Same goes for republicans.

What utter, utter shite this article is. America really needs to move towards a more socialist system, instead of having the top 1% owning all the country's assets (erm.. including the healthsystem and the media, so any meaningful discussion will never take place!)

America needs to evolve,..or it will die a natural death. We are in an economic and social unwinding period (natural and normal),…Putting an “extremist” label on an activity just shows how fear mongers work. Assuming that only Christian belief systems are the only systems that work….is pure folly.

Who the fuck is this Baldwin and who are the Western Centre for Journalism – what sort of bullshit name or front organisation is this…should it be the Western Centre for Journalism Studies? This is pure right wing shit propaganda…I'm also confused to find it on Disinformation. Disinfo should at least post a disclaimer. That first paragraph is laughable – “dedicated to destroying the Amercan way of life (and) christian based culture and our free market economy”. Fundamentalist and corporate America are doing a fine job of destroying Americans without the help from left wing organisations – and the effects are felt worldwide! False allegations against Bush? Fuck off Baldwin….

“Free enterprise” is nothing more then the freedom of a few existing wealthy parasites to use their stolen wealth to further exploit and accumulate off the backs of the working class. This kind of tripe really shows how messed up America is; Chomsky’s comparison of America today with pre-Hitler Germany is pertinent and apt. America has been long hijacked by the right and have now lost all touch reality beyond their microcosm. American’s are so brainwashed they’re out their demostrating against democracy calling it communism; that a very dangerous delusion. Americans on the whole have been rendered impotent by the trash the rightwing ruling class equate with America culture disseminated via their monopoly on mass media and undermining of public education. Is America too far gone now to be redeemed? Perhaps the only way to save democracy now is to shift away from America politically and economically? But of cause the unlearning of the lessons of WWII affected by the Right have been nearly global, still, at least some real political diversity does still exist in West Europe ..
