Croatian Teenager Wakes Up from a Coma Speaking Fluent German

From the Mail Online:

Croatian doctors are baffled after a teenage girl who fell into a mysterious coma woke up speaking fluent German.

The parents of the 13-year-old from the southern town of Knin said their daughter had only just started studying German at school and had been trying to read German books and watch German television  -  but had never been that good in German.

But since waking up the teenager has been unable to speak Croatian and even refused it, but communicates only in perfect German far superior to her mastery of the language she had when she was taken ill.

Split’s KB Hospital director Dujomir Marasovic said they were still trying to find out what caused the mysterious coma and why the girl has apparently forgotten how to speak Croatian.

Marasovic added: ‘You never know when recovering from such a trauma how the brain will react. Obviously we have some theories although at the moment we are limited in what we can say because we have to respect the privacy of the patient.’

He said the condition was so unusual that numerous doctors have examined the 13-year-old including German-speaking doctors to try and get to the bottom of the mystery.

I'm going to have to go with reincarnation. Like she woke up remembering a language she'd used in a previous life.

I mean, language is too complex to just remap as happens with other instances of skills that are obliterated by brain damage and then some other part of the brain that normally doesn't perform that function then picks up the slack by re-routing the pathways.

A language is a complex skill that requires not just hearing but understanding and practical usage.

I frankly can't come up with another possible option — especially since according to the article, this has happened before with people coming out of the coma speaking dead languages from ancient times.

    Most interesting article…..

I'd have to disagree with you there. Yes language is complex, so is the human mind. In the time of the coma the brain could have rewired tremendously. Forceful unlearning of one thing (damage to the brain) can dramatically improve something else that has been learned, but couldn't be used correctly because the new language she was learning was fighting against the language she was engrained with. Until that was removed could the learned language come through much more quickly than just learning multiple languages normally. Maybe I'm just not a spiritual person, but thats my take on it. Truely an amazing phenomenon.

The only flaw in that theory is that if she speaks fluent german, she would have at least have been exposed to the wide range of vocabulary required to speak fluent german in the articles remarkable way. Even if she had been exposed to TV and books and the class, she simply would not have SEEN enough words to speak fluent german, even if she mastered them instantly.

Erm, you disregard quantum science. It is possible that when she hit her head, somehow the memories of german language were transposed into her mind in a quantum justaposition. We already know that a photon can be in more than one place at once, so perhaps the coma was the effect of the initial 'transfer' of information.

Another option, if you are religious, is that a saint is speaking through her, or an angel, or god himself. Besides, reincarnation must happen at birth, and so that theory really just doesn't hold water. And just because you can't come up with a better reason, doesn't mean a better one doesn't exist, but rather, that you simply aren't aware of it yet.

The mind is an amazing machine indeed, and to forget one language and remember another is very plausible when it comes to trauma injuries. So this only leaves two possible explanations:

    1) Divine intervention.

    2) The girl had substantial exposure to the German language throughout her life (regardless of her studies), such as watching subtitled German television and movies, and perhaps the parents are discounting her entire exposure to German in the hope of being TV famous in their own country and around the world via the web.

    Cynical me….

This is not uncommon, I remember reading about a woman here in Canada who woke up from surgery with a Full on Newfie Accent.
From a metaphysical perspective it could be past life, it could also be a fragment soul coming in or dominating the body.

    It's definitely interesting.
