GMOs Alter the Genetic Make Up of Our Healthy Bacteria

Although GMOs have infiltrated our food supply, the results of human feeding trials have only been published on one single occasion. Unfortunately, that occasion offered some pretty disturbing findings. It found that the genetic code of GM soy can infiltrate the genetic code of the healthy bacteria in our guts — and change the genetic makeup of the healthy bacteria inside us. Nobody knows how these mutant bacteria will function inside us — yet given the proliferation of GM soy, most of the population probably already has them inside of them.

Mutating the genetic code of our healthy bacteria is incredibly dangerous because these healthy bacteria live inside us for a reason. They are our first line of immune defense and they keep us well by crowding out many harmful bacteria, fungus, and pathogens that cause innumerable diseases. But when their genetic structure is changed, who knows if they’ll be able to do this job effectively? Who knows if they’ll even be beneficial anymore? More than likely they won’t.

Because GM soy transfers its genetic code into our healthy bacteria, it’s possible that our own healthy bacteria will now produce abnormal GM proteins inside us for the rest of our lives. Mad cow disease is one example of a problem that abnormal proteins cause.

    by no means an expert here but it seems that the link they are making to mad cow disease is hysteria. aren't bse and cjd caused by prions? it is difficult to see any reason why prions will have anything to do with this stuff they are talking about, other than that the author has developed for us the category of “abnormal proteins”. it can be argued that the author wasn't really meaning to say that the problems will be like cjd, but he was trying to make a spurious link to whip up our fear. not that this isn't something to be very cautious about.

    Mad cow disease has a completely different origin — namely that cows eating dead cow cells in their food (our food industry essentially turning them into involuntary cannibals by grinding up cow bits that get into their feed) produces these zombie cells that eat up their brains. This effect has actually been seen in human cannibal cultures in the South Pacific — which is yet another reason why cannibalism is bad, even when consumed with fava beans and a nice chianti.

    But the problem of bacteria and GMO stuff is real in the sense that the only way you make genetically modified ANYTHING is by pulling the guts out of bacteria (which are incredibly resilient and can break through genetic barriers that other organisms cannot – which is why they’re used) and the new genetic material is parked inside it then the organism is allowed to enter the thing you wish to “modify” and the bacteria essentially re-writes your code.

    That’s a radically simplified explanation, but in layman’s terms, that’s how it’s basically done. the transport mechanism to insert new genes are bacteria.

    The problem is that whole “Life finds a way” quote from the Jeff Goldblum chaos theorist character in Jurassic Park. Just because you can force bacteria X to do something for you now, doesn’t mean that this living organism which is programmed for aggressive self-preservation isn’t going to up and surprise you with something unexpected.

    The issue I have with genetic manipulation more broadly, is that it shows the same lack of humility before the complexity of Nature (which has take BILLIONS of years to develop these lifeforms) that atomic scientists displayed a generation ago.

    Simply because you CAN do an thing, doesn’t mean you SHOULD do it.
