Rape Lay: Japanese Hentai Game Outrage

This offensive video game has resurfaced, (apparently several years old) but still shocking, at least to western sensibilities. As bad as it is, it raises the question of whether it’s worse than the extreme violence portrayed in games without sexual content. Also brings to mind the age old “Does art mirror society, or shape it?”

I bet these same feminist groups didn't have as much to say about that game. Or how about the one where you can stalk through an airport slaughtering innocent, unarmed people, great level BTW.

    This game is pretty lame IMO, and it clearly didn't have much of a cultural impact if folks are only noticing its existence years after its release. It only appeals to a fringe… If people like it, whatever.

    Reminds me of a line from some webcomic…a mother is worried about her son playing Grand Theft Auto, not because he's going on killing sprees or murdering prostitutes, but because “he gets in a car and drives very slowly, looking for blacks…”

    It's tempting to say that it's only a niche or fringe game, but I doubt most would have the same reaction about a game where you target black people or any other ethnicity (except for French people, because nobody likes them). The reason this makes people uncomfortable is because it legitimizes repellant, abusive behavior–you can't claim that most players aren't living out a fantasy because that's EXACTLY what they're doing.

    On the one hand you want to say that here's an outlet for those urges that doesn't hurt anyone, surely that's better than someone going out an actually raping someone. On the other hand, one of my friends was sexually assaulted in Japan, and one wonders how far games like these go towards desensitizing people to a very real, very awful form of assault.

    I object to the game on aesthetic grounds, in that it makes my world an uglier place for it's existence, for the fact that it allows these ugly, pathetic desires for power and control to make themselves more apparent (coincidentally, this is also why I want to murder Glenn Beck. Unfortunately, “aesthetics” won't hold up in court).

      As some who is black I have the had same reaction to a game in which you target black people. These are mods of other games like Doom, made by groups like the KKK and they're hilarious. Don't get your idea of what the general population thinks about race from the likes of Al Sharpton and some of the various talking heads in the media, with all their white guilt.

      And so what if your friend was sexually assaulted in Japan. People are sexually assaulted all over the world all the time, and have been since before video games even existed.

          Well that's not the reasoning I demonstrated there, but yes, you certainly have no reason to put stock in anything I say, nor I anything you say, nor anyone else anything any one person or anyone says.

          I was actually directly responding to your expression of doubt that the reaction would be the same if we were talking about a game in which black people were targets for violence. IMO, the likes of Sharpton would proclaim to feel the same about this Japanese rape game, they just wouldn't be as quick to campaign against it because it wouldn't be in keeping with their usual agenda. In the same way, Phil Donahue might not be as outspoken concerning issues that don't directly relate to the Catholic church.

          I'm not surprised about the game, but unless there's some documentation you can present that shows that your friends assault was part of a rise in sexual assaults in Japan and that this rise is related to the existence of video games where rape is the objective, I wonder if this isn't entirely personal on your part.

            hmm, the challenge is valid, I won't argue that; but I wonder how possible it is to track sexual assualt in a country where that sort of thing often goes unreported…at any rate, I wasn't suggesting that video games cause this behavior (or violent behavior, which has never been proven to my knowledge), only that they desensitize people to it, which I think is a fair assessment.

    I suppose I don't get it. They're all “they're doing all these awful things to women!” “no one should play games where the only way to win, is to rape…” the couple of gamers they interview they have it right. they aren't doing it to people, but to pixels. unthinking, unfeeling data, I have a hard time getting any more upset about this than I do about games like mortal kombat or GTA. And second, why is anyone acting shocked? Did the title somehow mislead them? “Rape Lay? Hm…maybe it's about farming and they just misprinted the title from 'grape'?” doesn't seem likely does it? Now the japanese do have a problem with sexual assault, but that's more to do with differences in cultural norms, and attitudes towards subjects: last time I checked, sexual assaults on trains were more considered something along a personal responsibility issue than anything else, though again I might have that wrong. While I don't think it's right, I have a fairly hard time telling a country I don't inhabit how to interact with their citizens and expecting every country to enact laws, or stronger laws to be more like the US is ridiculous.

    If anyone can point to a time in the past (before the advent of video games and violent movies) where things worse than those portrayed here did not happen then you shall be able to complain about video games. Worse things happen in real life all the time, use your energy and resources to battle those, nobody tries to stop you from pretending that you are better than everyone else.

    It seems like a lot of places miss the fact that most games of that type aren't made by companies, they are made by individuals. Each individual one doesn't sell all that much. Unless it gets huge media attention like this particular game… good job media.

    Oh, and that one line: “games that the rest of the world would call pornographic”… Japan DOES consider them pornographic. They are always in a clearly labeled section of the store. Granted, they are not always blocked off, and someone might accidentally see a bare breasted women on the cover (OH NO!), but they are clearly sectioned off from the rest of the games. You're not going to find RapeLay right next to Street Fighter anywhere.

    One more note: people also need to stop acting like rape porn doesn't exist in the US too. But, somehow watching doesn't cause media outrage, but playing it does. I personally think both rape porn and rape video games are appalling, but such things have been around for years and years… the sudden outrage is ridiculous.

    Also, I'm tired of seeing these things come up in google for the term “Japanese games”. It would be like if you searched “American movies” and half the stuff that came up was awful yet very specific porn movies that most people don't even watch.

Every crime that ever happened began with the thought first.Would you want your son(if you had one) to spend hours playing a game that teaches him how to rape,and carry it out? What a person feeds himself,he slowly becomes. Think about your own life. What have you been fed,in the past-in the present? Why have you come to not believe in God?             2. This is gonna sound like bragging, but whatever. I make people laugh all the time, so I think I have a pretty good sense humor. I definitely don't have respect for women, men, the seriousness of rape, racial issues etc. none of it, if it's in the context of a joke. I'll say anything, about anything, in an attempt to be funny. I might not always get a laugh, I might offend people, but that's not gonna stop me from attempting.

            This is how much of an asshole I am. I have an uncle who, just recently, got his girlfriend pregnant. Now they're both alcoholics, she's a chain smoker (about thirteen weeks in and she hasn't stopped smoking), he never pays his bills and has just received an eviction notice. They're obviously not in any position to have a kid. So, I was talking to my mom about this, and she was saying “how are they gonna raise a kid with nowhere to live, and what kinda parents would they be” and so on. She follows all this up with the question “what would be better.” My response was “a partial birth abortion.” Her immediate reaction to me saying that was laughter, because she knows me well enough to understand that that type of morbid humor shit is what I do. A partial birth abortion, as I understand it, is one that takes place around nine months into the pregnancy, which involves a pair of scissors being jammed into the scull of the baby and the scull being pried open, the kids brains sucked out. That's the type of thing I'll joke about.

            The things that make it funny are the same things that makes any joke funny, timing and delivery. Now it's understandable that those sort of things don't translate well into internet text and, aside from that, I wasn't aiming for making you laugh. I was just amusing myself by taking something that you were so passionate about, and shitting on it. I'll do that from time. You could call it bating you to be obnoxious and immature, sure. That works.

            So yeah, I may be an asshole, but my asshole-ness isn't directed towards women, or any specific group. I'm just an asshole across the board.

            You might be right about my mom, and I certainly didn't think I would be anything like I am now when I was a youngster with all sorts of hopes and dreams, but it is what it is. If I had a problem with any aspect of myself, I'd be working to change it, whatever it was (which I am doing on a daily basis, actually). Being an asshole isn't something that bothers me. It's all just for shits and giggles, ya know. I look for a laughable angle in everything. If this world was a utopian paradise, devoid of pain and sorrow, I'd be doing the same thing. I'd just have different material to work with. The world being what it is, however, when something like a Japanese rape game comes along, I'm looking for funny in that.

            Hey tears. It's been a while.

            Now I gotta be honest with you. When you tell me that it's Jesus who got you through all the suffering you've known in your life or that people will pay for they're evil ways, what I think is that having such beliefs is the only way for you to make sense of a world that does not inherently make sense on it's own. You have this notion that there's a way people's lives are supposed to be. That we're not supposed to suffer or that people aren't supposed to do terrible things to their fellow man and if those ideas aren't reflected in the reality you see before you, there must be a new life that awaits us. A life free of all the horrors we've witnessed and the pains we've been afflicted with during our time here. You were certainly right about me in the sense that I don't have that kind of hope.

            The way I see it, you were raped and impregnated by your father, you were forced to abort his child, you've had three miscarriages, you're in severe pain daily and you believe that it's Jesus who has gotten you, and continues you through it all. When you die, that will have been your life and there will be no eternal bliss to make up for all of it or to confirm your beliefs. You'll know nothing beyond your last moments of consciousness as your life comes to a end that will be quite final.

            That is what I see as the bleak reality of our current existence. I don't like it, I think you'd have much more cause not to like than I, but I see no evidence to the contrary. You say you are proof; that it is not your own strength that has carried you through all of your hardships. However, all I think when I hear that is that you don't give yourself due credit.

            If there is a Heaven, of every single person I've been associated with, in any way, since the day I was born, you're one of a handful that, in my opinion, actually would belong in such a place. Of course, if I actually knew you, maybe that opinion would be different, maybe it wouldn't. All I'm saying is that, from what I've gathered from talking to you on the internet, you seem to be a genuinely good person. Were this world populated solely by people such as yourself, I imagine it would be Heaven on Earth. We're probably never going to be completely on the same page, but I'm really glad to have spoken with you. My hope for you is that you are relieved of your pain and that your hardships end within this lifetime.

            Hey Ronin! I've been thinking,and praying for you,and your family.Want to write more,but have been very sick lately-worse than usual,and then I stay off the pc for awhile. Sometimes it feels like I'm talking to the wind,and the only thing I hear is my pitiful voice asking God for help,asking Him to make me and my daughter healthy again. (She suffers from the same afflictions as I do. She is 18,and has excruciating head pain,and has been to dr. after dr. They have not helped yet.) Watching my daughter suffer for six years has been the most painful thing I have ever experienced. Trying everything I can,from dr.'s,to medicines,to head rubs,back rubs,to watching movies for hours with her,to taking her to the ER for pain shots,to begging God to heal her-saying that He does not have to heal me, if He would only heal her. I would be the happiest person alive knowing my daughter was finally free,and able to be young and enjoy life without terrible,mind bending pain. Just to see her free would be amazing- a gift. But I do not know if that will ever happen . I have absolutely no certainty of healing for me,or for her. But then I will experience a moment when everything is quiet,and I am alone with God, and despite everything I feel an overwhelming peace inside with a deep feeling of God's love. It is like He is holding me. I can almost feel His hands cradling my aching,tired body. It is times like these when all I want is to be with God.For Jesus to come back and bring His children home. Heaven does exist. I know it does. And for all the bad that has ever happened to me and my family, and all who love Him there will finally come the day when all will be made right. God will judge and punish my father for the evil he has done. Ronin, I think and pray for you so much. There is a Heaven. I am not afraid of death itself, just afraid of disappointing God, but that is why He sent Jesus. I just want to be good for Him. Every day I sin.     There is a reason that games like this have ratings and warnings on the back of the content of the game. Despite the general foolishness towards violent media in general; Studies show that the correlation between violent acts in video games and actual violence is even weaker than that of cigarette’s and lung cancer. This means that it’s entirely plausible that perhaps violent people just enjoy violent games, and not that violent games make violent people. Also, no one is actually forced to play these games. I would daresay that the majority of people who enjoy these rape fantasy games will probably never actually rape anyone.

    As a crime rape is often one of hatred and domination. This means that you are more likely to be raped because you pissed someone off, and they want to make you feel weak than because they are horny. This means that the people who buy games like this (which are obviously horny and feel no emotional attachment to fantasy characters) are once again probably not rapists. The idea that you can pin the degradation of society on a form of adult entertainment is foolish. Maybe we should stop referring to beating the hell out of someone over a video game as “raping them” as well? Of course not, we all know that actual rape is nothing to brag about, and that the few rape victims that do report their dramatic experiences probably don’t compare the feeling of being raped to losing at Halo 3.

    While I do agree that rape is a serious and horrible crime, and that rapists should be punished to the fullest extent of the law including capital punishment where it is legal, I disagree that these games cause any harm to society so long as the guidelines are followed. Those guidelines are very simple:

    1) You are an adult fully capable of telling fantasy from reality. A child (especially a young one) is much more likely to be influenced by a game like this.

    The games are not to blame. The music is not to blame. The television is not to blame. It is the ignorance of society.
