70 Percent of Americans Favor Letting Local Police Stop People In Order To Verify Citizenship

WTF America? This poll was taken at the end of April. It’s interesting how many of these poll-takers believe immigration (in itself — legal or illegal — according to this poll) hurts the United States. Would have liked to see the question asked how many of these people are still concerned about terrorism, but I guess since Wall Street managed to destroy our economy (including millions of jobs and people’s life savings) economic concerns are overriding security ones. Reports UPI:

Seven in 10 U.S. adults support arresting people who can’t prove they’re in the United States legally, a poll about Arizona’s new immigration law indicated.

The Angus Reid Public Opinion poll of 1,002 American adults asked respondents if they’d want four guidelines in Arizona’s immigration law enacted in their own state.

The law, the nation’s toughest, seeks to identify, prosecute and deport illegal immigrants and gives police broad powers to stop people on suspicion of being in the United States illegally.

Seventy-one percent of poll respondents said they’d support requiring their own police to determine people’s U.S. status if there was “reasonable suspicion” the people were illegal immigrants, the poll found.

        News Flash: The cops already CAN and DO harass people with nothing more than a hunch.

        Trust me, I hate the F***ing cops and don't want to see them with any more power than is necessary to allow society to function. But, if the Federal govt hadn't utterly failed one of the few tasks it has been given, Arizona (and perhaps now Rhode Island) wouldn't have needed to take steps like this.

        As that handy map above demonstrates, I'm already subject to increased hassle from the Feds no matter where I go in my community. F*** that, the Feds need to do their damn job at the border and not 80 miles into the country where 99% of their contact is going to be with legal citizens.

            Whether the Federal Govt failed to accomplish a core mission through ineptitude or for political expediency, it doesn't change the fact that they failed to do their job.

            No question that it's a “Divide and Conquer” tactic, but why take it lying down? Deal with it at a State or Local level and move on.

            As it turns out, the States created the Federal govt and when the Federal govt abuses, misuses, or fails to use the powers it was granted they revert to the individual States and the People.

            Personally, I'd like to see the States coin their own money (as the Constitution provides for) and tell the Feds and The Fed to shove off…

So kind like if you get stopped by a cop then he thinks your drunk he uses probable cause and checks if your drunk. So if you get stopped by a cop and can barely speak English there is probable cause that your in the country Illegally.

    The poll takers were self-selecting and the sample size was only 1,002. They still gave themselves a margin of error of 3.1% but, really?

    All it takes is one Internet forum to invade the poll and your results are now skewed.

    I wouldn't take this number very seriously. I'm sure Fox News will run headlines with it, but whatever.

    Ok I'm in Arizona and have been for 45 years and am quite upset about this REPUBLICAN crap that has come about since Janet Nepolitano bailed on us here.

    I am totally against SB 1070 and NOBODY I have come in contact with here is for it.

    The cops here are against it and don't want to deal with it and claim they will feel like Nazi's if force to implement this.

    Suddenly there is a ban on ethnic studies in our schools here along with a move against teachers with accents.

    They used to until recently require a permit to carry a concealed weapon and now anyone that can own a weapon can carry it concealed if they choice to do so.

    You are also now permitted to carry your weapon into your favorite local drinking establishment. Nothing like mixing your booze with guns. Hey you can't smoke here but guns are ok.

    They are working on a bill that will permit student over the age of 21 to carry firearms onto college campuses.

    Suddenly after 17 years Phoenix decides to end a program that aids
    minority-led firms. Hmm

    Ok here is a really embarrassing bill that fortunately didn't pass.
    It's the other racist bill that came about at just about the same time
    the immigration bill did. It's the infamous “Arizona Birther Bill”
    which would have required any presidential candidate to provide proof
    of citizenship in the form of a U.S. birth certificate in order to
    land on an Arizona presidential ballot. Isn't that the most
    ridiculously Republican thing you've ever heard of not to mention
    racist in regards to our current president?

    For some reason I'm here wonder if maybe by some odd chance, did the
    South African Apartheid somehow infiltrate the Arizona state house
    when we weren't looking? Is that possible? I'm lost for words (more
    words).

    What are they preparing us for?. Is there some sort of secretive conservative redneck agenda here?

      “Ethnic studies” classes are typically based in a Marxist Dialectic. Originally, Marx proposed that the wicked Bourgeouise oppressed the virtuous working class. In the '60s, Marxists applied this same pattern to a variety of other contexts. Now in “Ethnic Studies” classes, White People are the oppressors and uh everyone else is the victim.

    That would be great…except that an awful lot of people forget that “reasonable suspicion” breaks down to “because I feel like it” when translated from cop to English. How quickly cowards shit their pants with fear and beg for ever tighter security from the bad things the TV people told them about. Some days, I'm not even sure this country is worth saving, given that the average citizen may have been born here, but isn't worthy of the title “Citizen”.

    Arizona has the most porous section of border in the United States. Arizona's local lawmakers have REPEATEDLY asked the Feds for help in stemming the flow of illegal immigration into their state, and easing the accompanying rises in violent crime (the implication of the political left is that actual crimes against Americans don't matter if hypothetical rights of illegal immigrants are potentially violated). The Feds have REPEATEDLY refused to help.

    Arizonans are angry as hell, and with good cause.

    Enforcing stop-and-show-your-papers laws, even if they are not a violation of Constitutional rights, will not solve problems caused by illegal immigration. Those desperate enough to come to this country seeking a better life will be preyed further on by vendors of fake documents. The criminal element is probably already well-supplied with fake paper. Law enforcement training to discern real from fake IDs would turn out to be a bonanza for politicians and consultants and a nightmare for police.

    Furthermore, since the financial incentive for illegal immigration has rarely been addressed, the faces of illegal immigrants may change, but the influx from our southern neighbors will not slow down. Until cheap-labor conservatives are held accountable for undercutting the minimum wage and avoiding social security taxes by hiring undocumented workers, the drama inherent in the “Mexican standoff” between the stereotypes — the scapegoated illegals and their defenders against the so-called patriots — will keep the media circus going for decades.

    Disinformation and half-truths now get to screw up the lives of yet another group of innocents.

      That's a just plain silly statement. Try to move a corpoartion across any border and tell me how “freely” this happens.

      Corporations can't operate in countries without government approval, license, and careful adherence to local laws. In the specific case of Mexico (since this is what this thread is about) any business attempting to move to Mexico has to overcome a number of hurdles both official and unofficial.

          Great sweeping generalities aside, if you study those laws – or better yet study NAFTA or GATT, you'll find that nothing in either of them allows for countries to move across borders freely.

          I actually stumbled across the laws of Mexico regarding immigration while trying to move a business and my family there. I know a bit about this subject.

          (Also, money can move across borders in very small increments but try moving $10,000 or more and discover how “freely” money moves between borders.)

    Three points here:

    1) Mexico has the 5th largest reserve of natural resources in the world. There's no reason that this should be a 3rd world country other than the greed and corruption of a few people at the top. The hardworking and entrepeneurial Mexicans coming over the border should stay home and overthrow their government. (Either by peaceful or non-peaceful means.) Letting the problem continue and letting those corrupt leaders control Mexico is not good for anyone but the elite few. (Never forget that the richest man in the world is a Mexican. There is wealth in that country).

    2) If you think anything about Arizona's laws are overreaching, I suggest you try to move your family to Mexico or otherwise study their laws that cover immigration.
    - They are very selective about who they allow to do it. (Poor need not apply)
    - They do not tolerate dissent from outsiders even a little bit. (I have a friend who is a journalist that was deported a few years back for writing about corruption in the police department there.)
    - They have a national language and not only do they not print their ballots in multiple languages like the U.S., they don't even allow bilingual education in schools. (not even in private schools – though the richest can sidestep this.)
    - They are not afraid to pull you aside based on the color of your skin and ask for proof of citizenship (and also a bribe not to throw you into jail.)

    3) America still has an open door policy for immigrants and allows in 100's of thousands a year – including a huge number of Mexicans and South Americans.

    There is a difference between immigration and illegal immigration and if you're politically unwilling, or too stupid, to know the difference, you might want to think twice before putting your ignorance on display.

    There are millions of immigrants in this country LEGALLY that were poor when they got here but played by the rules. Many are fighting for the jobs now being taken by illegal immigrants. Where is the fairness there?

        If cops want to harass latinos, there are many, many other laws on the books that work just as well. Most of them don't have the written in rules against profiling either -which this law has. If a cop wants to be a dick, he can accuse a latino of spitting on the sidewalk, speeding, littering, loitering or a ton of other crimes.

        Given the “teeth” in this law, a cop would be a fool to abuse it. The hassle just isn't worth it.

        “Reasonable suspicion” is something you have to proof in courtroom and other legal situations. When you use it as a reason to bring someone in, if it goes to court you have to be able to back it up.

        A big part of the resistance to this law is all about keeping illegals in this country so that they can work for less than American workers would do the same jobs for. Are you just being a tool for the rich? Are you a member of the teaparty too Andrew?

        It's aso about illegals that don't want to follow the rules and get in line just like the Koreans, Africans, Indians, Pakastanis, etc. What makes Mexicans think they are so special that they deserve to get in line in front of people that follow the rules? What's fair about that?

          I agree with Johnny on this one. Most people often mistake Illegal Immigration for the Immigration Dream. It's one thing to not be a racist – it's another thing to allow illegal immigrants to take local's jobs for lesser money and more bang for buck and eventually allowing illegal immigration to allow an entire outside nation to take over the country in terms of resources. The key thing here is fairness to all – not just the Mexicans. Any country should favor its own citizens more than outsiders. If countries allowed all kinds of illegal immigrations to occur to take over businesses and commerce and such, then why even bother talking about countries?? It then boils down to “who's the richest” still right?

            I think most Americans DO carry ID at all times. We need it to do our banking, drive our cars, etc. I have no problem with it.

            Now, I'd like to have the same legal protection that the Arizona laws – which means no unreasonable harrassment – but if I'm caught commiting a crime, or if I in any way pursue usage of any taxpayer paid service (schools, medical care, etc.) I have *no* trouble whipping out my ID. I don't think the vast majority of Americans would.

            Now when i go to Mexico or any other country, I know that I have to carry my passport at all times, and fully expect to have to show it to rent cars, hotel rooms, etc. and if a cop asks, I show it regardless of their reason for asking. That's because I respect their laws and because I know that I am in their country legally. (If I didn't know that I was I wouldn't be there.)

            You've invested so much into your distrust of cops that you're missing the key points here.

            One is that cops can abuse tons of laws if they want to harrass you. This law is one of the few that has teeth built into it if cops do use it as a way to abuse you as there are very specific areas of the law that could get cops in trouble should they do it. That doesn't exist with other laws. If you're going to be worried about harrassment, this is an bac place to draw the line. (Read the law. You'll wish that other laws had these kinds of guidelines.)

            The second is that it comes down to fairness. There are tons of people that want to get into this country and a lot of them are from way, way more screwed up places than Mexico. (Somalia for instance.) These legal immigrants are fighting for the same jobs, federal funds, housing, etc. as the illegal immigrants from Mexico. There has to be a way to organize immigration so that it becomes an orderly process or all of these peoples lives are negatively affected. That organization has to start with cutting unregulated and illegal immigration, or it's never going to work.

            Finally, there's the issue of Mexico having a lot of promise as a country but suffering from an ongoing talent drain and huge corruptions.. As I said when I started, Mexico is a rich country but the wealth is held by a few and corruption is rampant so the most motivated in Mexico come here to work. Right now, they and sending 10's of billions of dollars back to Mexico annually, which just makes the problem worse as it creates income disparity that makes the poor there poorer and the money all eventually winds up in the hands of the corrupt few anyway. It's a corrupt system and right now illegal immigration is fueling it which makes it bad for eveyone involved on both sides of the border.

            Put your anger in check and thing of the bigger picture. There are millions negatively impacted by all this and nothing is going to get better until we get the problem fixed.

I have no issue with the concepts behind these immigration laws, but do not think immigration is bad. I just want people to follow the rules of this land, just as we are expected to follow the rules of the lands of the rest of the world. I do not dislike immigrants, just resent the ones here illegally.

    hey, they're not going to arrest me without due process, they're not going to monitor my internet and phone, they're not going to detain me by labelling me as an “enemy combatant”, etc. it is being sold as something to make America stronger when it is the exact opposite.

    Bottomline, America is filled with people who don't have the slightest clue was America is really about. All through a stable economy, the GOP go away with a scorched earth and constitution program, but when all those policies caused an economic collapse, all of a sudden people are mad at Washington. America isn't about how much money you make, it's about Freedom and Government that obeys the will of the people and it requires the people of such a republic to inform themselves and imploy their reason so they can best monitor the government and make sure the people they choose to represent their state and their community do the right thing.

    America has become something else. It's become a greedy, evil empire whose citizens couldn't care less if we bomb brown people by the six digits for no good reason or that people in China and elsewhere are making a few dollars a day so that we can get cheap, disposable goods at Wal*Mart while also maintaining our standard of living. Oh, and we want government entitlements but we want low taxes. We want to maintain our empire but don't want big budget deficits. We want things and we do not care about ideas.

    And oh yes, a significant portion of the country want America to be run not by the constitution but by the Bible while at the same time claiming the constitution gives them that right. To many Americans, all men are created equal, as long as you're white and heterosexual. This a reaction to globalization. Many Americans are having the fertilizer scared out of them by the way the world is changing and these are the last desperate acts of Christendom trying to keep what power and authority it still has over a world that is waking up.

    Right here right now, there's no place I'd rather be…right here right now…watching the world wake up from history.

      If you did this, you'd find that the cops wouldn't care and wouldn't follow up. One thing covered in the Arizona law is that anonymous tips aren't to be considered as a motive for checking citizenship.

    There are 22 tribal reservations in Arizona including the Navajo nation. The Navajos (Dine') are one of the few tribes that do NOT issue tribal ID's . Now if for some reason a Navajo person is stopped & doesn't have any other paperwork could they end up jailed as an illegal immigrant? Oh the irony.

    Well pubs ask me to show ID before I go in for a drink, everywhere in the country. It's not that big of a deal for law enforcement to find out if you're supposed to be here however it would be better if citizens had the right to inquire of people's status without police involvement.
