Ex-Canadian Defense Minister Says Aliens Have Visited Earth: Hawking Is Wrong About Them

CTV News reports:
Live Long and Prosper

Stephen Hawking’s warnings of an alien invasion have prompted a vigorous defence of extraterrestrials by their most prominent Canadian fan. Former federal defence minister Paul Hellyer, 86, believes not only that aliens have visited Earth but also that they have contributed greatly to human technological advances.

So he can’t quite understand why the world renowned astrophysicist views them with such trepidation; Hawking recently warned that malevolent aliens could lead to the destruction of humanity.

The longtime cabinet minister accuses Hawking of spreading misinformation about extraterrestrials.

“I think he’s indulging in some pretty scary talk there that I would have hoped would not come from someone with such an established stature,” Hellyer said in an interview.

“I think it’s really sad that a scientist of his repute would contribute to what I would consider more misinformation about a vast and very important subject.”

Hawking speculates in a new documentary that most extraterrestrial life will be similar to microbes, or small animals — but he adds that advanced life forms may be “nomads, looking to conquer and colonize” new planets.

pretending to know how a totally alien intelligence would react to anything is reckless speculation

Most of the UFO usual suspects come off as butthurt that Hawking doesn't acknowledge their unproven claim and worse yet offers contradictory speculation. They should watch the documentary, it's of course thought provoking and genuine in it's approach to the question.

    • “most of the usual suspects”

Like highly decorated Military insiders? Apollo Astronauts? NASA employees? educated and sober minded pilots, police officers, doctors, scientists, and government workers?

  4. Intelligence does not presuppose morality, you can look at humanity itself easily enough and see this is the case. Though admittedly assuming intelligence, it's entirely likely that they have a contradictory opinion about what is or isn't ethical. After all, it's sort of hard to have Kantian moral absolutists in space without Kant being there, right? The same can be said for any ethical system developed here, or there. The intermingling could very well be sparse at best and nonexistent at worst. Even assuming they're initially non-hostile, cultural misunderstandings can be very disruptive to long term diplomacy, never mind the fact that if they contact you intentionally they likely have ulterior motives to do so. After all, assuming you can travel galaxies, or are just generally significantly more advanced, what possible benefit is there to interacting with more primitive species?

Hawkings put it down to curiosity. If we're interested in meeting alien life then it's reasonable to think that there are some intelligent aliens interested in doing the same.

He speculates that if they've survived long enough to be space faring then they are likely to be a species that is used to exploiting everything at hand (like us). If they are creating wormholes to travel, for example, they would need massive amounts of energy and the obvious source of that kind of energy would suns. So once here, if they needed to leave there's a chance they'd eat our sun to further their own cause regardless of our feelings.

  5. To satisfy Americans aliens would appear armed with WWII weapons and bulging biceps and play computer games all day with joints in their mouths. To satisfy the Christian population they would come in prayer, with wings, to select people only. To keep the Chinese happy they would have short penises and slanting eyes and work 24/7. To make Russians happy they would drink Vodka and swear a lot, and stay drunk for extended periods of time. To keep Canadians happy they would save every other paycheck, moralize on the world and do a lot of hockey games. I want my Alien to be benevolent and grant me eternal life with all the steak I can eat!

And to make you happy they'd appear as people who indulge in ethnic stereotypes in leiu of actually thinking? Oh, wait, you were probably “joking”. HILARIOUS

Not sure if you are being sarcastic, but I think you are right!

Simply because Stephen Hawking is a genius on many levels, doesn't mean he knows the un-knowable.
When and if we meet “aliens”, only then can we have a clue to “their” intentions.
Who says “aliens” have to be inteligent? For all we know, the universe could be teeming with space born “animal” creatures who live by instinct alone, who don't have “rational thoughts” as we know them.
The possibilities are as vast as the universe itself, which is virtually endless.
Yes, the universe is a dangerous place, with many dangerous creatures…….some of them are humans.

If said “aliens” are even remotely like us, than of course they would be here to conquer.
