Teens Treat ADHD With Medical Marijuana

weedlineThe New York Times reports on a, er, teen health trend:

At the Peace in Medicine Healing Center in Sebastopol, the wares on display include dried marijuana — featuring brands like Kryptonite, Voodoo Daddy and Train Wreck — and medicinal cookies arrayed below a sign saying, “Keep Out of Reach of Your Mother.”

The warning tells a story of its own: some of the center’s clients are too young to buy themselves a beer.

Several Bay Area doctors who recommend medical marijuana for their patients said in recent interviews that their client base had expanded to include teenagers with psychiatric conditions including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

“It’s not everybody’s medicine, but for some, it can make a profound difference,” said Valerie Corral, a founder of the Wo/Men’s Alliance for Medical Marijuana, a patients’ collective in Santa Cruz that has two dozen minors as registered clients.

“How many ways can one say ‘one of the worst ideas of all time?’ ” asked Stephen Hinshaw, the chairman of the psychology department at the University of California, Berkeley. He cited studies showing that tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the active ingredient in cannabis, disrupts attention, memory and concentration — functions already compromised in people with the attention-deficit disorder.

It's about time. Despite the “chemical imbalance” marketing claims, the most basic examination of the evidence reveals that psychiatric drugs merely suppress unwanted thoughts/behaviors symptoms via psychotropic effects. This means any drug which alleviates suffering/symptoms is just as valid of a “medication” as psychiatric drugs.

If medical marijuana advocates want to apply the exact same circular reasoning as psychiatric drug ads, we could claim that pot “corrects” an “imbalance” in cannabinoid receptor activity, which we believe is the root cause of some psychiatric symptoms. It must be true, since stimulating the cannabinoid receptors leads to a decrease in psychiatric symptoms in some people, right? It's equally as true/untrue as antidepressant ads.

Really? Wouldn’t you say that it’s a far worse idea to prescribe millions of kids speed and/or synthetic coke for their hyperactivity issues like we do now?

i’ve got adhd.  used to take adderall, but it made me neurotic and kept me from sleeping.  i have my medical marijuana card for adhd.  weed helps me with school work and other tasks.  it makes me more intuitive, so i’m able to do things like calculus with greater ease.  almost everyone i know is able to write papers high and do other work as well if not better than when they haven’t smoked.

come on man its the future; everyone knows weed’s great.
