U.S. Drug Czar Admits Drug War Has Failed

The unusual thing about this story is that it’s being carried by a news heavyweight, the Associated Press, and it covers a surprising amount of ground in covering the issues:

After 40 years, the United States’ war on drugs has cost $1 trillion and hundreds of thousands of lives, and for what? Drug use is rampant and violence even more brutal and widespread.

Even U.S. drug czar Gil Kerlikowske concedes the strategy hasn’t worked.

“In the grand scheme, it has not been successful,” Kerlikowske told The Associated Press. “Forty years later, the concern about drugs and drug problems is, if anything, magnified, intensified.”

This week President Obama promised to “reduce drug use and the great damage it causes” with a new national policy that he said treats drug use more as a public health issue and focuses on prevention and treatment.

Nevertheless, his administration has increased spending on interdiction and law enforcement to record levels both in dollars and in percentage terms; this year, they account for $10 billion of his $15.5 billion drug-control budget.

Kerlikowske, who coordinates all federal anti-drug policies, says it will take time for the spending to match the rhetoric.

“Nothing happens overnight,” he said. “We’ve never worked the drug problem holistically. We’ll arrest the drug dealer, but we leave the addiction.”…

Considering that a Mexican senator was recently kidnapped (presumably by drug kingpins), I'd hate to see America without a war on drugs…

    • Hadrian999

the war on drugs created those kingpins

      • Tuna Ghost

The illegal drug market in the US is what allowed those kingpins to come to power. That is one of the primary failings (and the worst irony) of the War on Drugs, that it puts a great deal of money and power into the hands of some very bad people. Were the drugs legal, the kingpins would not have the power and influence they do now.

        • Tuna Ghost

that reply was meant for CC, obviously.

Congratulations, Afghanis, Operation Enduring Freedom has liberated you to get your babies hooked on the class A drugs which the evil Taliban had virtually eliminated from your country.

I don't suppose this would catalyze some sort of widespread anti-prohibition movement, eh? It's a shame really.

Hilarious! The notion of prohibiting a natural and fairly common herb is the most amusing effort of uber-moronicum ever conceived – even by Republican standards. It should be legal, nay, MANDATORY! free de weed…

    So….., drugs won?

  • http://voxmagi-necessarywords.blogspot.com/ VoxMagi

Sounds like a long overdue glimmer of sanity. We never really fought a war against drugs…we fought a war against human beings and fed an expansion of the prison industry and the court dockets. Treating addiction works…destroying people's livelihoods and transforming hundreds of thousands of people into felons with diminished hopes for future participation in society is the real crime.
