Wave Of Deadly Knife Attacks On Children Continues In China

Scariest-trend-ever alert: madmen going on knife and hammer rampages in Chinese schools. The Economist reports:

ALL month schools in China have been on what the state-controlled press calls a “red alert” for possible attacks on pupils by intruders. In one city police have orders to shoot perpetrators on sight.

In the latest reported incident, on May 12th, seven children were hacked to death at a rural kindergarten in the northern province of Shaanxi. Eleven other children were injured. It was one of half a dozen such cases at schools across China in less than two months.

Assailants were often said to be lone, deranged, men venting their frustrations on the weak.

Thank god for the Internet. I was watching MSNBC the other morning and basically was given a headline with no follow up. I hate that, it is disgusting to me that people are paid to bring me the news, yet if I want to really know what is going on I have to track it down myself. That being said, maybe someone can tell me what the hell this thing in China is all about. Why are people killing children? Political unrest? Religion? Aliens?

The chinese government does not recognize mental illness. (So I have been told by a very educated friend of mine that has followed this story for a few months.) Also, in a nation where people are only allowed to have one child you can imagine what a terrible blow it is to these parents when they lose their child. Maybe this is the motivation behind these acts of a possible extreme group of dissidents. Maybe these reasons having nothing to do with it but it seems that one of these or a combination is what is at hand.
