‘Sanity is Slavery’ Fights Psychiatric Abuse Through Music

For this past year machineKUNT Records (home to Experiment Haywire, Trimetrick, Lady Parasyte, Syrenn etc.) are hard at work on the “Sanity is Slavery” compilation to fight against psychiatric abuse through music.

This is a 2 digipack CD compilation which also includes a digital bonus disc. 10% of proceeds are going to MindFreedom International which is an organization dedicated to mental health rights. The compilation features 48 diverse (mostly unreleased) tracks from artists across the globe including Attrition, Hanin Elias, Leæther Strip, amGod, Pzychobitch, and Trimetrick. It is mastered by Kolja Trelle of Soman.

machineKUNT is currently giving away packages to anybody who pre-orders the compilation as they count down the last days of their Kickstarter fund. With everything from paintings made specifically for the cause to customized songs by Experiment Haywire and Society Burning to customized photoshoots of machineKUNT models to professional remixes by De-Tached to rare Attrition posters there are 14 different packages available to everyone who helps machineKUNT reach their Kickstarter goal.

In an age of digital media the cost of printing physical albums in astronomical but Rachel Haywire of machineKUNT Records is interested in releasing a collectors item that will be remembered for its meaning and message. The large booklet of this digipack will contain pictures, bios, and testimonials from the artists on the compilation along with testimonials from psychiatric survivors all over the world.

Sample clips of the songs are available for listening directly on the machineKUNT website.

You can pledge on one of the 14 packages here on Kickstarter.

I have found that quite a bit of music IS psychiatric abuse.

    • http://machinekubt.com Rachel Haywire

In a good way or bad way? ;)

  • DeepCough

Isn't this what the Psychiatry establishment wants: music therapy instead of action against a problem?

    • http://machinekut.com Rachel Haywire

They definitely don't object to people arguing with each other.

If you're not taking direct action how are you helping out? I'm raising awareness on what's going on to music fans all over the world. I take it you've worked for over a year to release an entire musical compilation to raise awareness on issues that are important to you?

Look at the musician backlash against BP. Does PB just want them to be writing songs about it? I'm sure they'd rather that they didn't.

I feel like trying to demolish my stereo with one of those foam bats.

  • Greyor

Why not just listen to SPK? :)

    • http://machinekut.com Rachel Haywire

How about both? SPK SPK SPK! I do like.

The way that they met in a mental institution and collaborated musically was definitely inspiring to me.

I can't help but feel that this would be more effective if it weren't full of nobodys and more than 10% were going to MindFreedom International. Also, isn't the slogan a tad glib? Sort of ignoring some very real mental disorders, isn't it?

    • Justin

“I can't help but feel that this would be more effective if it weren't full of nobodys”–yeah, i'm sure it would be more effective if bono and thom yorke and elton john took part in it. idiot.

      • Tuna Ghost

Stay with me here, genius–a bunch of nobody's get together, find a cause to get behind, and pledge only ten percent of the proceeds to an organization? Maybe they're less than sincere, yeah? Maybe it's not actually about the “cause”, which is shady enough anyways (“sanity is slavery”? Like I said, pretty effing glib there guys)? Maybe it's a bunch of schmucks trying to get their name out there?

        • http://machinekunt.com Rachel Haywire

You definitely sound paranoid and not in that “hip” way either. 10% is the most we can give to MindFreedom International as “nobodys” because if you haven't noticed the underground music industry isn't doing too well. I met the organizer of MindFreedom International in San Francisco almost a decade ago. There is no cause that I am more passionate about. I created this compilation because I was locked up against my own will as a teenager and abused in there worse than throughout my entire lifetime.

You strike me as someone who thinks everything is a scam because you have zero output.

          • Tuna Ghost

I'll worry about how you reason that much out of two posts on a website later, I guess (btw, is paranoid “hip”? that wasn't brought up by at the last hipster meeting). I'm not saying the situation in state-run psychiatric wards isn't harrowing for many, I very aware that it is. I object to glib statements that marginalize very real mental disorders that many people suffer from, statements like “sanity is slavery”. There are many real objections to the state of psychiatry today, but it is still a far cry better than what the situation was like half a century ago.

Re: the 10%, as someone who grew up around professional musicians, I can say with certainty that anyone who told you that working in the music industry is good money was lying through their teeth. So you can only afford ten percent? Ten percent of a record full of music that apparently no one is buying? Maybe you should think of a better fundraiser idea, yeah?

    • Conniedobbs

I know and respect a lot of the bands on this comp. Maybe the problem is that you're not in the target audience for this. That's fine, I hear that Nickleback is releasing some sort of benefit album soon, I'm sure you'll pre-order that as soon as they're available.

      • Tuna Ghost

You've crossed a line, ma'am. NOBODY likes Nickleback, and saying they do is a terrible thing to accuse someone of.

        • Pantheisticsolipsist

in my entire life i have met *one* nickleback fan…yet they are still one of the best selling bands ever??!?
THAT is the real conspiracy here…
