Aaron Cynic writes at Diatribe Media:

Newt Gingrich, like many other Americans on the far right, has a problem with Mosques, more specifically the planned Islamic community center near Ground Zero. This doesn’t come as a shock in the least, his reasoning (H/T Justin Elliott at Salon) is that there aren’t any churches in Saudi Arabia and also, New York already has Mosques, so we should take the Saudi’s lead on this one:

There should be no mosque near Ground Zero in New York so long as there are no churches or synagogues in Saudi Arabia. The time for double standards that allow Islamists to behave aggressively toward us while they demand our weakness and submission is over.

Those Islamists and their apologists who argue for “religious toleration” are arrogantly dishonest. They ignore the fact that more than 100 mosques already exist in New York City. Meanwhile, there are no churches or synagogues in all of Saudi Arabia.”

America was founded upon religious freedom and freedom of speech. The Constitution allows people to say or do things that others might find offensive. What Gingrich has said is unamerican, and he's just saying this stuff to gain political favor with bigot voters.

But Islam transcends mere religion to an all encompassing political system which is foreign to the post enlightenment West. It's political side is in no way compatible with the US Constitution.

sounds a lot like what every religion tries to pull off.

Can you build churches or synagogues in Saudi Arabia?

It says a lot about our society that we still allow religious extremists like Newt to have a voice, even to run for offices, after they attacked our country.

As for Ground Zero, the solution is clearly to build a church next to the mosque, thereby repudiating the religious intolerance responsible for the destruction of the WTC.

How about we stop selling weapons and cooperating with the Saudis until they adopt minimal human rights standards for their population?

Oh, that's right. Oil AND profits for our military contractors trump that plan. But it's okay to trot the Saudis out as an example on this issue.

we should let them build the mosque…between an orthodox Jewish temple and a southern baptist church! then we'll build a Buddhist temple just outside the blast radius and let the monks pray for them! Hell we could have the opening days all coincide :) we can give them all sticks and stones and MAYBE even do it all lebron James style, with a too big buildup. Oh, hell yes…PAY PER VIEW!!! Damn, I am a capitalist after all.

i'll take 20 on the Buddhists in a throwdown

I'd drop $40-50 to see that.
