Watch What a Legal Pot Economy Looks Like (Video)

CaliforniaMarijuanaHaik Hoisington writes on Alternet:

This fall Californians will go the polls with a chance to make history. They will be able to cast a vote to tax and regulate marijuana like alcohol or cigarettes. California’s Proposition 19 is one of many similar initiatives cropping up on state ballots across the country.

Whether it’s calls for decriminalization or medical marijuana the end of cannabis prohibition has never seemed closer. In this short animated parable, “The Flower,” award winning artist Haik Hoisington contrasts a legal marijuana economy with an illegal one, to show how everyone stands to benefit from ending the war on weed.

“The Flower” contrasts a utopian society that freely farms and consumes a pleasure giving flower with a society where the same flower is illegal and its consumption is prohibited. The animation is a meditation on the social and economic costs of marijuana prohibition.costs of marijuana prohibition.

The portrayal of pot making people all colorful and smiley was a little over-the-top for me. It reminded me a little of the stuff drug companies put out to market anti-depressants.

It will be interesting to see, once pot is legal and has corporate money behind it, if the industry/marketing starts to become as sleazy what we've seen with alcohol and tobacco.

    • Hadrian999 August 1, 2010 at 5:05 pm #

probably but I don't lay all the blame on the industry,
there has to be a lowest common denominator before you can market to it.
people get what they deserve when they don't demand better.

    • Jallen August 2, 2010 at 12:24 am #

Yeah, you can't grow your own alcohol, you can make some, but it is not worth the work unless you are up to it. Tobacco isn't that easy to grow for yourself. Cannabis, on the other hand, can be gorwn inside your home. Don't want to buy from big companies, you don't have to.

  2. Rohatsu July 31, 2010 at 2:50 pm #

I'd say the most accurate depiction in the video is the coffeeshop vs. the bar atmosphere. When I was in Amsterdam, the coffeeshops I sat in looked exactly like that.

  3. VoxMagi July 31, 2010 at 5:19 pm #

If they pass something in Michigan that puts pot clinics on legal ground…I am going into the vending machine business and putting hostess and little debby products close at hand.

  4. DeepCough August 1, 2010 at 3:08 pm #

The biggest shame is that the video implies that we can only have weed if there's a capitalist model behind it.

    • DAC August 1, 2010 at 10:29 pm #

I don't care what model is behind it as long as they finally legalize it!

    • Jallen August 2, 2010 at 12:27 am #

Maybe the problem lies with capitalism itself–at least the way it is now.

    • Haystack August 2, 2010 at 3:42 pm #

It seems like the biggest talking point for legalization has become the commercial value because that's what legislators pay attention to. It's almost as though, in order to get the stuff legalized, we have to sell out the ideals associated with it–personal freedom, anti-materialism, etc.

  5. rabster August 2, 2010 at 12:27 am #

This video could just as well be about opium, in fact the flower metaphor would be even more appropriate.

    • Guest August 3, 2010 at 11:00 am #

The video couldn't be about opium because the when the people are trying the flower one person does a lot and falls over but he is ok to show there is no way to overdose. On opium you can overdose.

around 70% of the mexican drug cartels' profits come from marijuana. considering the amount of crime repealing alcohol prohibition eliminated i cant see how legalizing it could do anything but help with drug wars.

      • Catsrule52 August 8, 2010 at 5:19 pm #

Why pay for something you can get for free?

        • generalanvilpants August 9, 2010 at 11:34 am #

Because for the most part Americans are lazy.

You can grow your own food too. How many people have their own gardens?

Why fertilize, plant, fix sexes, water, grow, harvest, dry, de-seed/clean and all of that hassle when you can just BUY IT and SMOKE IT!

          • tarmancer October 18, 2010 at 2:01 am #

gardening is not economically feasible in some areas. where i live we would have to use too much water which is expensive in the town i live in. we need more rain than we get most summers and we have short summers. i wish.

      • 420Girl August 9, 2010 at 3:25 pm #

There are going to be “Drug Wars” No matter what! I think legalizing pot will decrease the problem with drug wars lets leave the stoned Hippys Alone so we can Bust people who are actually creating drug war problems ie: Herion, Crack, Cocaine, opium, ext.

  15. brian August 6, 2010 at 11:44 am #

That was sweetness. American's wake up!! Our society and lives could be so much better. Free the tree!!!

  16. Mpatalano August 8, 2010 at 7:54 am #

instead of legalizing marijuana, it should stay illegal and there should be a push to BAN CIGARETTES.

    • Sadarsa August 10, 2010 at 9:36 am #

yeah, cuz wee wanna take away your right to make a decision. sure, lets keep pot banned.. next let's ban cigarettes cuz thier bad for you…. oh now lets ban guns… ok now lets ban caffeine, cuz IT's bad for you..
humm o wait pfrofanity is bad, so we should ban that too…Boxing and martial arts promote violence.. lets ban it! THINKING IS BAD… BAN IT.

wtf is with people who on a daily basis ASK to loose their freedoms…

just because YOU dont want to do something and think it's bad the rest of us have to follow >.>
the day cigarettes are outright banned is the day i exorcise my civil right to oppose an oppressive government… because what's next?

      and i don't even smoke

      • highdevil August 10, 2010 at 2:47 pm #

I agree with this broski right here. People are fucked up like that, I mean how the fuck is shit like guns a legal thing even with a permit. In the 1990's wash DC was literally known as the “murder capital”. Plus legalize weedski and criminals who smoke r probly gona forget who to jack and most likely wouldn't give a fuck about not doing it cause they're high as shit.

    • Crash_berlin August 13, 2010 at 1:38 pm #

Totally, we should ban everything that you don't like for the simple fact that you don't like it. No one is talking about banning McD's Double Cheese Burgers and I'd rather be forced to smoke and entire pack of cigarettes in less than 5 minutes than have to eat one of those.

    • Rachi August 18, 2010 at 7:57 pm #

this wld never work the point of smoke involves tabacco to a degree, does it not …. mmmm

  17. Mpatalano August 8, 2010 at 7:55 am #

Nothing would get done – violent gangs all smoke pot regularly and are still killing each other every day.

    • dicky August 8, 2010 at 12:51 pm #

but they have a motive to kill people because if they can sell the drug then they can make money. if the drug is legal, you take away the gangs ability to fight over it because it will be more widely distributed by someone other than drug lords. also the amount of money that would go to use for the United States other than going to fund a gangs organization…hello

    • 420Girl August 9, 2010 at 3:23 pm #

Find me one Story Where a violent Gang Got Really Stoned and Started Killing People, Find me a story where someone got stoned and became a dangerous criminal Please! Im all ears!

  18. Mpatalano August 8, 2010 at 7:59 am #

This is nearly as idiotic as the peanut butter disproving evolution video. What about the people who want to live freely and naturally without marijuana when they are forced to be around a bunch of pot smoke and stoned morons?

    • Andresete August 9, 2010 at 1:47 pm #

they should get a life and stop worrying about their own lifes, moron

      • Andresete August 9, 2010 at 1:48 pm #

start instead of stop, my bad

  19. Catsrule52 August 8, 2010 at 2:55 pm #

I don't think we need to be taxing this… This should be so legal to the point where you don't have to buy it from somebody, you can grow it yourself. If we were to grow it ourselves the cost would be in the pennies. It would be worth about as much as parsly or dill. If we want to have positive changes with legalizing marijuana it cannot be making anybody money as a drug. Remember those pharmacists companies that make billions? Not to mention the things they would add to “preserve” it. It just wouldn't be the same. Over 70% of the Mexican Drug War is fuelled by marijuana. Imagine if it were to become worthless due to legality.

    • Syn August 9, 2010 at 6:31 pm #

Government would never make a drug legal unless they can tax it. They don't support anything unless they can make a profit. I'm pretty sure that they'd find a way to put a charge on people who grow at home… like making it mandatory for those people to have a license–a license that they have to buy.

The whole reason that it isn't legal is because there's no way to control it, being that it's a plant. It isn't something that's brewed, it's grown. So despite legalizing it and making it available in pharmacies, having licenses to grow it, and so on, there's still no way to control who is smoking it (because they would put an age limit on it, for example) and who is selling it–there will be people who sell cheaper than the pharmacies, and that isn't something the gov likes because they aren't getting the profit.

For clarification purposes, I'm not all “anti-government” but that's just how the government operates. No profit = BAN. Just look up the alcohol prohibition laws in 1920.

  20. Really? August 8, 2010 at 3:26 pm #

While I do for the most part agree with the legalization of marijuana, I feel this cartoon is too exxagerated to be taken too seriously.
also, the pleasure-happy society where the “flower” is legal reminds me a lot of how the government in Brave New World manipulates its citizens with soma (a pleasure inducing drug). I really don't think over-indulging in government marketed marijuana will create a better society, just a more manipulable one.

  21. 420Girl August 8, 2010 at 4:44 pm #

Their are gonna be pros and cons for legalizing pot ofcoarse there are ups and downs to everything we do in life. You have to figure if the good out weighs the bad! I am all for legalizing pot i think it will help stimulate our economy and our industry. Lets stop the crime on weed and just legalize it! i mean the government or whatnot can put certain stipulations on it like where you could buy it how much at a time maybe just on the weekends idk but Its not like we are saying hey lets legalize crack, cocaine, herion Those types of drugs RUINS ppls lives! if you have seen intervention theres not one episode where their addicted to weed and destroying their lives and their familys lives come on now lets get real people!

  22. 420Girl August 8, 2010 at 4:47 pm #

Haystack- Id rather smoke pot than to take anti-depressants!

  23. Bbsixty August 8, 2010 at 7:21 pm #

The alcohol and tobacco lobbyists have to much power in Washington. They fight legalization constanly.

  24. Happy August 8, 2010 at 7:41 pm #

Ok, so how will driving while high be enforced? Many people drive, in fact most people do. NORML itself says that “responsible cannabis consumers never operate motor vehicles in an impaired condition.” , yet we all know that people drive impaired quite frequently, and with the legalization, it would become even more of a danger with more and more people doing it.
I love how the movie depicts that when you're baked, you're instantly the happiest person in the world, yet when you don't get your pot, life and society become like Soviet Russia and the KGB are always watching your every move. Don't get me wrong, I support marijuana being given to people who need it, but for the average joe, just learn to deal and love life how it is without needing something outside of yourself to feel happy. If we all needed weed, we would have been born with a fresh supply of THC in our blood stream.

People need all kinds of things “outside themselves” to enjoy life. Food, sex, other people, art, computers and medicine are all “outside ourselves” yet try to imagine life without them. You're using some faulty logic, sir. People in a free society should be free to choose their medicine/drugs. Alcohol is legal, yet certainly damaging and dangerous yet people are free to decide how much they use etc. Come on, man, do you want the government deciding for you?

  25. Shelly6ss August 9, 2010 at 4:31 am #

It should stay illegal. I don't want my coming son to be a pot head.

  27. shit for brains August 9, 2010 at 5:00 pm #

to be honest if legalizing weed is a solution. then we have to take in consideration of positive and negative out comes like in algebra what you do one onside you do on the other so if. there are drug wars now then how is legalizing it goin to help anything. taxes are taxes so be it. and people then will start fight ting for the best greens and people will still profit didnt anyone learn from economis supply and demand.

  28. Chasewhitey August 10, 2010 at 12:30 pm #

If it was to become legal, drug dealers would resort to something else to make their money. It wouldnt make it any safer of a society. If people grew it, then the government can't tax it. It's a lose-lose situation all together.

  29. Indonesiasong August 14, 2010 at 6:48 am #

Do not legalize, just decriminalize. Legalization means government control. Just let the plant be a plant you can grow and consume on your own with little to no state control. Legalization is a bad idea.
