Fox News, Rupert Murdoch and the ‘Terror Mosque’

Thanks to Andrew Lander for sending this little bit of Fox News hypocrisy our way, from Yahoo News:

The opponents of the proposed Cordoba Initiative Islamic center planned for Lower Manhattan are fond of suggesting, by way of lengthy and often confusing chains of causation and association, that its principal planner, Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, is connected to terrorism. “The imam has been tied to some shady characters,” Fox Business Channel’s Eric Bolling recently said, “so should we worry that terror dollars could be funding the project?” Blogger Pamela Geller, who has become a regular talking head on cable-news channels to denounce the mosque, has noted Rauf’s involvement with a Malaysian peace group that funded the group that organized the Gaza flotilla under the headline, “Ground Zero Imam Rauf’s ‘Charity’ Funded Genocide Mission.”

On last night’s “Daily Show,” Jon Stewart skewered these antics as a “dangerous game of guilt by association you can play with almost anybody,” and proceeded to tie Fox News to al-Qaida by connecting Fox News parent News Corp’s second-largest shareholder, Saudi Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal, to the Carlyle Group, which has done business with the bin Laden family, “one of whose sons — obviously I’m not going to say which one — may be anti-American.” But Stewart didn’t need to take all those steps to make the connection: Al-Waleed has directly funded Rauf’s projects to the tune of more than $300,000. If Fox newscasters can darkly suggest “terror dollars” are sluicing into the Islamic center’s coffers via “shady characters,” then are Al-Waleed, and News Corp. leader Rupert Murdoch, by the same logic, also terror stooges?

This was one of their better take-downs of Fox's reporting. What occurred to me while watching it is how little it matters. Fox can get away with saying whatever they like because their viewers live in a bubble, refusing to consume news from any “liberal media” that might confuse Fox's narrative with facts.

    • justagirl

and yet, here we are watching… and watching. i hate tv.

    • dumbsaint

Yeah, it's not as if Faux isn't well aware of what they're doing. All this does is show how arrogant they are with spin.

    • Your Mom

Re: Fox News viewers living in a bubble.

Fox News was the ONLY national television news network to cover the trial of the murderers of 13-year-old Jesse Dirkhising, who was killed by 2 gay men in the course of being bound, gagged, drugged and repeatedly sodomized.

Because they were gay, two child raping murderers got a pass from everyone except Fox News.

      Who lives in a bubble?

      • Andrew

Classic red herring. Knowledge of the Dirkhising murder isn't the only criteria regarding living in bubbles.

      • Gemmarama

oh my god you're obsessed by this case aren't you? does it turn you on or something?!

      • Haystack

I answered this point last time you raised it, but you never seem to hang around long enough to read anyone's replies.

Guess you wouldn't want anyone to burst your bubble. *g*

More interesting is that Fox timed the heavy airing of that case immediately after the cold blooded torture and murder of Matthew Shephard…as hate crime laws were gaining ground nationwide. They exploited a second horrible crime to divide sentiment and reduce sympathy for gays…not out of any sense of heroism or dedication to the American public.

Tellingly, crimes as hideous as either happen every day, but our news, right and left alike, only select key items for heavy airing depending on the politics of the moment and the power to resonate with viewers. Fox, like all the others, is comprised of crass, ad driven ratings mongers…with the solitary exception that they don't even attempt the illusion of neutrality…they yank the steering wheel and swing right hard and fast, crash over the guardrail, plow over the passers by, and head straight off the cliff of idiocy while screaming “fair and balanced” all the while…but only its viewers are fooled.

    • Not an Obama fan

Every station on TV except Fox News can be described as incredibly liberal, especially MSNBC and the Communist News Network. Why is that, when poll after poll shows most Americans consider themselves conservative.
Please, this is hardly that big of a deal considering how little press Obama and Pelosi's closed door meetings get when it comes time to get something shady pushed through Congress.

      • Andrew

They can described as incredibly liberal, but not accurately. Most have a strong centrist bias. Fox is biased towards the far right, and MSNBC is biased to the left. You want “incredibly liberal,” listen to the Pacifica radio network. If you're on the far right, something can be to your left and still be right wing, and the reverse is true for someone on the far left. I've heard far leftists describe liberals as conservative because they're to their right. One has to recognize one's own point of view is necessarily relative.

One should also not make the mistake the media makes regarding Obama's words and his actions. His actual governance is far to the right of his liberal rhetoric, the latter being the main thing people seem to judge him by.

  • A Bad Joke

“then are Al-Waleed, and News Corp. leader Rupert Murdoch, by the same logic, also terror stooges?”

The Right has always been the terror of mankind. They will never stop until we are all in chains, bound to their will and with our young on their dinner plate.

    • Your Mom

“The Right has always been the terror of mankind. They will never stop until we are all in chains, bound to their will and with our young on their dinner plate.”

      Lenin? Leftist.
      Stalin? Leftist.
      Hitler? Leftist.
      Mussolini? Leftist.
      Mao? Leftist.
      Peron? Leftist.
      Ho Chi Mihn? Leftist.
      Pol Pot? Leftist.
      The Red Brigade? Leftist.
      The Shining Path? Leftist.
Et cetera, et cetera, et cetera…

A Bad Joke, indeed: leftists have often been willing to defend the murder of millions. 'The German Communist playwright Bertolt Brecht, when challenged that thousands of innocents had been sent to the Gulag by Stalin, replied, “the more innocent they are, the more they deserve to die.” To you or I this remark is disgusting, but to the hard left it reflects their eager willingness to kill any number of persons without concern for innocence or guilt if it might assist in bringing about the socialist future.'

      • Andrew

Hitler and Mussolini were right-wingers, not leftists.

      • Gemmarama

there is more to politics than just left and right. there's a whole multi-faceted spectrum out there that you, quite self-evidently, can't get your pretty little head around. stick to baking cookies mom.

      • 5by5

What kind of a moron thinks Hitler and Mussolini are Leftists? Dude, pick up a fricking history book and stop listening to douchebags like Beck.

        And furthermore:

        Pinochet? Rightwinger.
The Shah and the Ayatollah? Righties.
        Apartheid? Rightie.
        The Taliban? Rightie.
        Samosa? Rightie.
For that matter every General de Chimichanga we installed in Latin America despite the people's will? Rightie.

        Extremist is extremism, sport.

        • 911/Reichstag

Is the National Socialist party left or right….? humm defend ur party till the bloody end!!!! The Left Right para-dime is dooming so many.

  • http://voxmagi-necessarywords.blogspot.com/ VoxMagi

Hmm…well, speaking of shady characters…if Rauf is associated with working at the behest of George W. Bush, then he can't possibly be involved with a character any shadier than that unless someone resurrects Countess Bathory or Gilles DeRais.

  • Your Mom

“lengthy and often confusing chains of causation and association”? Classic strawman:

Whether or not Rauf is associated with terrorists (and that case is still open, in my mind), he's blamed the West for starting jihad, and still defends terrorists at every turn:

    • Andrew

Y'all are gonna owe 9/11 victims' families an apology if Rauf is guilty.

  • JB

I don't have any particular problem with the Cordoba Center. But if those behind the Gaza debacle are involved, I'm going to lose any respect for the project. The Gaza flotilla was an attempt to hurt Israel, not to help the people of Gaza.

The people killed on the flotilla got what they deserved.

    • 5by5

JB: “The Gaza flotilla was an attempt to hurt Israel, not to help the people of Gaza.”

      Wrong. Spin again.

Fox News is owned by an Australian, a Saudi Arabian, Hey those guys are foreigners. Roberts court says foreingners can influence our politics with secret money. The terrorists who hit the twin towers were foreigners. Hey there is something in common with Fox News and terrorists and foreign money.

Bill O'Reilly and Hannity is Irish. That must mean they belong to the Irish terrorist organization. One can never tell about those Irish names.

Why isn't Glenn Beck onto this? A conspiracy kook like him can fill up a whole season worth of programming on how our country is being taken over by foreigners in the form of Fox News.
