From the Washington Post:

The U.S. delegation walked out of the U.N. speech of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Thursday after he said some in the world have speculated that Americans were behind the Sept. 11 terror attacks, staged in an attempt to assure Israel’s survival.

He did not explain the logic of that statement that was made as he attacked the U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Ahmadinejad has called for the destruction of Israel and is deeply at odds with the United States and European allies over its nuclear program and suspicions that it is designed to produce an atomic bomb. Iran says it is only working on technology for electricity generation.

The U.S. delegation left the hall after Ahmadinejad said there were three theories about the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks:

  • That “powerful and complex terrorist group” penetrated U.S. intelligence and defenses.
  • “That some segments within the U.S. government orchestrated the attack to reverse the declining American economy and its grips on the Middle East in order also to save the Zionist regime. The majority of the American people as well as other nations and politicians agree with this view.”
  • The Americans stood and walked out without listening to the third theory, that the attack was the work of “a terrorist group but the American government supported and took advantage of the situation.”

Mark Kornblau, spokesman of the U.S. Mission to the world body, issued a statement within moments of Ahmadinejad’s attack.

“Rather than representing the aspirations and goodwill of the Iranian people,” he said, “Mr. Ahmadinejad has yet again chosen to spout vile conspiracy theories and anti-Semitic slurs that are as abhorrent and delusional as they are predictable.”

Ahmadinejad, who has in the past cast doubt over the U.S. version of the Sept. 11 attacks, called for establishment of an independent fact-finding U.N. body to probe the attacks and stop it from turning into another sacred issue where “expressing opinion about it won’t be banned”.

From Al Jazeera:

PJ Crowley, the US assistant secretary of state, told Al Jazeera the statement was “totally outrageous”.

“[Those killed in the attacks] were people of all faiths, all nationalities. They were killed by 19 people, a plot perpetrated by al-Qaeda,” he said.

“We know who did it and they have admitted who did it. This idea that nine years later there is still some debate about who did it and why is outrageous.”

About 3,000 people died when hijackers crashed planes into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon and a fourth aircraft plummeted into a Pennsylvania field in 2001.

‘9/11 denier’

Marwan Bishara, Al Jazeera’s senior political analyst, said: “[Ahmadinejad's] attack on the traditional version of the 9/11 story was similar to his attack on the traditional version of the holocaust.

“So you can now say President Ahmadinejad is both a 9/11 denier and a holocaust denier.

And from Foreign Policy Passport:

Just from the press highlights, readers might get the impression that Ahmadinejad’s U.N. speeches are anti-American barn-burners, similar to classics by Hugo Chavez or Daniel Ortega. But the truth is they’re much stranger than that. Ahmadinejad tends to set up his political arguments with extensive discourses on theology and moral philosophy. The corrosive influence of materialism on human society is a theme that he seems to return to each year. Here’s this a sample from this year:

Nimrod countered Hazrat Abraham, Pharaoh countered Hazrat Moses and the greedy countered Hazrat Jesus Christ and Hazrat Mohammad (Peace be upon them all). In the recent centuries, the human ethics and values have been rejected as a cause for backwardness. They were even portrayed as opposin wisdom and science because of the earlier infliction on man by the proclaimers of religion in the dark ages of the West.

Man’s disconnection from Heaven detached him from his true self. Man with his potentials for understanding the secrets of the universe, his instinct for seeking truth, his aspirations for justice and perfection, his quest for beauty and purity and his capacity to represent God on earth was reduced to a creaturelimited to the materialistic world with a mission to maximize individualitic pleasures. Human instinct, then, replaced true human nature.

Human beings and nations were considered rivals and the happiness of an individual or a nation was defined collision with, and elimination or suppression of others. Constructive evolutionary cooperation was replaced with a destructive struggle for survival.

The lust for capital and domination replaced monotheism, which is the gate to love and unity. This widepread clash of the egoist with the divine values gave way to slavery and colonialism.

There really isn’t any other world leader who speaks this way on the international stage. Most Western analysts tend to gloss over the religious/philosophical portions, which seems like an oversight given the emphasis he puts on them.

He had the balls to state the truth, a pity the media totally distorts, 9/11 denier? Denying what? The only conspiray theory here is that a group of man living in caves managed to overcome the most protected country in the world. And you might be sure there is another 911 coming soon, the media drums are soaring….

    • Marc

Exactly right! All he asked for is an independant investigation by the UN… But of course they will say that it is the same as denying the holocaust…pfft… if it wasn’t such a sad subject I would laugh…

BTW, none of the so perfect mass media channels reported the story that the UN finally came to the conclusion that the Israely attack on the turk convoy was ILLEGAL! And no one mentions that Israel HAS the nuke and refuses to sign a treaty that Iran already signed years ago! So who is the real threat here??? Of course now I am just being anti-semitic again?! When will people learn that it is anti-zionist and not anti-semitic…

There’s nothing ballsy about denying that your mortal enemy was the victim of a crime that might cause it to be deserving of sympathy or understanding.

I think people need to have a better understanding on the perception of truth versus some objective definition of truth. The collective perception of 9-11 is that it was carried out by operatives working with bin Laden’s organization. Whether that is an objective truth or not is pretty much irrelevant at this point – outside of Dick Cheney going on national TV, confessing to plotting the job, and then agreeing to submit to punishment, opinion is not going to change. What you could make a substantial argument about is the way in which two US administrations have used 9-11 and whether that is in accordance with international law. There is ample evidence that the US has completely ignored international law as well as its own domestic laws in carrying out its never-ending war on a noun. A more savvy politician would be able to make the sort of subtle arguments about the US’s actions that would go further towards dissuading countries from participating or facilitating the US’s military adventures. That’s happened to some extent, but no thanks to clumsy bullshit from dudes like this.

When I hear a world leader stepping up to point out to the world that 911 was perpetrated by traitors within the American government, and that this view was shared by many of the worlds leaders and nations. It only confirms what I have thought since I saw that there was not any debree from a crashed plane outside the pentagon crash site on 911, why every trade center building collapsed like a controlled demolition, and most importantly, the absence of the military(or the sinister assistance of it) on that day. If the world community believes that the United States government is capable of such atrocities, and WE THE PEOPLE believe that our goverment is to blame, might it be time to do something about it ourselves, before others have to. Look back on history, remember how the citizens of countries like Nazi Germany, Japan, and others before them suffered before they were liberated. Make no mistake, the world will liberate us to save themselves, and millions will die in this process. On the other hand, we could solve this issue ourselves, and save the world; thus redeeming our national pride and reputation. People, we are being led by monsters, and until we boot their traitor asses out of our state houses, we are no better than they are.

    • Synapse

You expect all that but you don’t expect any level of denial from the people effectively being framed? I seem to remember Al-Q basking in the glory of doing it before and after the incident, not to mention Osama Bin Laden’s Previous attempts to blow up the WTC. Everything else has been explained.

Ahmadinejad Applauded After Questioning 9/11 Attack
    Mahmoud-Ahmadinejad

He was greeted by applause when he walked into the United Nations General Assembly, and applauded again, even after questioning 9/11 and claiming that the American government may have been behind the attack.

That’s right, applauded after questioning the motivation for the terrorist attacks, who was responsible for them, and essentially suggesting they were a U.S. plot.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has made a variety of claims over the years during his appearances here, but he never has gone this far when talking about 9/11.

During his General Assembly address, the Iranian President called for a “U.N. fact finding group” to investigate 9/11.

He also said that ”the majority of the American people as well as most nations and politicians around the world” believe that “some segments within the U.S. government orchestrated the attack to reverse the declining of the American economy and its grips on the Middle East in order to save the Zionist regime.”

Before his speech, the Obama administration must have had high hopes that Ahmadinejad would have listened to the offers of diplomacy as presented by the administration and its allies on the Security Council. Members of the U.S. delegation remained in their seats. In years past, only what is called a “low-level note taker” has often been posted behind the little plastic “United States” sign, when Ahmadinejad took the stage.

On Tuesday, when Ahmadinejad spoke during the global summit on poverty, the American delegation remained even as he predicted the defeat of capitalism.

But true to form, he quickly went over the line with his 9/11 remarks and that prompted the U.S. diplomats, and others, to get up and walk out.

“ It’s outrageous,” said State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley. “a short distance from here, nine years ago, three-thousand people were killed in an attack perpetrated by nineteen people, and an attack that was orchestrated by Al Qaeda. We know exactly who did it, they’ve admitted it, the facts are not in dispute, so for the President of Iran to come here and make the suggestion that somehow this was an American plot, is simply outrageous.”

But as Ahmadinejad walked from the podium, he did so rewarded by applause in the august chamber of the world body.

Here is a buddy of mine’s response to the supposed “admission” of guilt for 9/11.

This has to be some of the best comic relief I’ve heard all week!

LMFAO!!! Esp. when the miffed U.S. delegation walked off mumbling about “We know exactly who did it, they’ve admitted it!”

-REALLY?!? Is that what they tell you to say???

    * Is that why you gangsters were in such a hurry to destroy, “recycle” and bury evidence of the crime scene -LIKE THE CHARRED REMAINS OF HUMAN BEINGS, OVER 1,000 OF WHICH CANNOT BE ACCOUNTED FOR- that they’ve had to get more money to dig up the garbage landfills to search for the remains of these people you say should be remembered with such solemn respect?!? (Apparently, the most efficient cremations are from office fires and gravity-driven building collapses!)
    * Is that why the FBI says it doesn’t have enough evidence to formally charge and prosecute Ossama Bin Laden (or any other Al-Qaeda co-conspirators, for that matter) for 9/11 but they have for his other alleged crimes in Africa and elsewhere???
    * Is that why you delusional war criminals can’t get any experts you don’t pay to corroborate the authenticity of the “fat-nosed” Ossama “9/11 Admission of Guilt” video which ANYONE can tell is a fake -a bad one at that?!?

“the facts are not in dispute.” [WAAA! WAAAAH!!!] A case could be made that a gangster-state enterprise like the one in D.C. must employ an entire population of pathological liars as bureaucratic functionaries, since this type will tell lies so outrageously unbelievable that they have absolutely no chance of getting away with saying anything so stupid. They actually believe their own bullshit more convincingly than anyone else you could hire for the job because they can’t help it. They’re pathological liars.

Wish I coulda’ been there! I’d be following them out the door dissin’ their asses! “That’s Right, Step Off, Ho’s! Time for y’all bitches to start dealin’ with your own bullshit! That’s right! That’s what I thought: Y’all need ta’ get on home ‘n change those nasty shitty drawers -Now get on home!” LOL!!! -Mikie

Ahmadinejad is a sphincter of epic proportions, and the second theory is utter, vicious nonsense, but the third theory is more than a bit plausible.  If he would have left his rampant anti-Semitism out of the speech, the counterpoint would have come through clearly.  Even a stopped clock is right twice a day.

No one outside of Fox News actually subscribes to the idea that al Qaeda succeeded by being especially cunning or sophisticated in their approach.  Observable facts don’t support that conclusion at all.

The popularly accepted version is that through some bizarre, coincidental, but pervasive and ongoing incompetence, al Qaeda members were able to come to the US on Saudi passports. Then they were able to take classes in flying airplanes in which they were quite clear they didn’t want to learn how to land or take off (quick quiz: what group of people need to know how to fly a plane, but not how to take off or land safely: suicidal hijackers — and no one else).  Then these same people were able to get one way tickets to various places.  Most, if not all, of these events were noted in some way, but mysteriously no one at the mid or upper levels of any agency took note or action.  Then President Bush gets a briefing well before the event titled “al Qaeda plans to use airplanes to attack inside U.S.” but supposedly never reads it.  He also supposedly never becomes aware of related warnings from MI6, German intelligence and Israeli intelligence.

People choose to believe this because it is more comforting to believe that your government is passively incompetent than to believe it is actively evil.  Unless, apparently, you’re in the Tea Party.  But I digress.

So, we can either choose to believe that no one above the level of local offices in the CIA, FBI, etc. has an intelligence greater than that of the average squirrel, or we can choose to believe that people up the chain thought it would be terribly useful if some event happened that would allow them to do things they had written out plans to do long before taking office, like invading Iraq, and securing a favorable oil pipeline deal in Afghanistan (the current President of Afghanistan’s last employer before taking office:  Haliburton).

I personally don’t think they helped engineer the tragedy, and I don’t really think they comprehended the scope of the planned attacks, but I do think it is more than credible to entertain the possibility that they essentially stood by and let it happen in order to facilitate their own plans.  This theory fits the observable facts, including Bush’s general stupidity and the short-sightedness of most of the members of his Cabinet, and has the advantage of sitting between the extremes of believing that Bush is 100% responsible and believing al Qaeda is 100% responsible.  In most cases, the truth is found somewhere between the extremes.  Just my considered opinion, your mileage may vary.
