U.S. Soldiers In Afghanistan “Killed Civilians For Sport And Collected Their Fingers As Trophies”

Stryker-soldiers-who-alle-004Wow, it doesn’t get much more grotesque than this. One of the most disturbing aspects is soldiers’ covering up the psychopathic behavior of their comrades. The Guardian reports on allegations against a dozen U.S. soldiers:

Twelve American soldiers face charges over a secret “kill team” that allegedly blew up and shot Afghan civilians at random and collected their fingers as trophies.

Five of the soldiers are charged with murdering three Afghan men who were allegedly killed for sport in separate attacks this year. Seven others are accused of covering up the killings and assaulting a recruit who exposed the murders when he reported other abuses, including members of the unit smoking hashish stolen from civilians.

Investigators said Gibbs, 25, hatched a plan with another soldier, Jeremy Morlock, 22, and other members of the unit to form a “kill team”. While on patrol over the following months they allegedly killed at least three Afghan civilians. According to the charge sheet, the first target was Gul Mudin, who was killed “by means of throwing a fragmentary grenade at him and shooting him with a rifle”, when the patrol entered the village of La Mohammed Kalay in January.

Morlock and another soldier, Andrew Holmes, were on guard at the edge of a poppy field when Mudin emerged and stopped on the other side of a wall from the soldiers. Gibbs allegedly handed Morlock a grenade who armed it and dropped it over the wall next to the Afghan and dived for cover. Holmes, 19, then allegedly fired over the wall.

Later in the day, Morlock is alleged to have told Holmes that the killing was for fun and threatened him if he told anyone.

The second victim, Marach Agha, was shot and killed the following month. Gibbs is alleged to have shot him and placed a Kalashnikov next to the body to justify the killing. In May Mullah Adadhdad was killed after being shot and attacked with a grenade.

The Army Times reported that a least one of the soldiers collected the fingers of the victims as souvenirs and that some of them posed for photographs with the bodies.

  3. What do we expect? Three, four, five tours of duty. Being asked to guard poppy fields for the CIA. This level of deceit and abuse will break the human mind.

It was a matter of time before we started seeing this. At just a handful of murders this is probably how it starts, then it soon becomes another My-Lai Massacre.
Ten bucks says the sentencing is just as a pathetic.

    “Viet Cong death squads assassinated at least 37,000 civilians in South Vietnam;
the real figure was far higher since the data mostly cover 1967-72. They [i.e., the Viet Cong] also waged a mass murder campaign against civilian hamlets and refugee camps; in the peak war years, nearly a
third of all civilian deaths were the result of Viet Cong atrocities.”

being slightly less bad than the worst isn’t much of a defense.

the real problem is that things like this cant happen without either corrupt or incompetent leadership.
when I was on deployment we were never without some level of leadership. and if we started to pop of frags somebody would want a detailed report on why.

I remember my army unit…. we had to have a report for everything. Scrape your arm on a truck… make a report. Break something… make a report… filed a report?… make a report.

All of them are wearing berets. Doesn’t that signify the accused soldiers are either Rangers or special ops? Sounds fishy to me.

The black beret is now standard headwear for the Army. Rangers wear tan berets, Airborne (on jump status) wear maroon, spec ops wears green.

Wow where have you been General Shiseki gave all regular army turds the black beret in 2000-2001 and took away my black beret. Former Ranger

It wasn’t my favorite choice of head wear on a hot day…

“Put this piece of black wool on your head! Its only 95F degrees.”

    • DO SOME RESEARCH, EVERYONE IN THE ARMY WEARS BLACK BERETS, WHY DO YOU PEOPLE ALLWAYS HAVE TO TRY AND FIND SOME CONSPIRACY IN EVERYTHING? THEY WERE JUST A FEW IDIOTS IN CONTRAST TO THE THOUSANDS WHO HAVE HONORABLY SERVED AND MADE A DIFFERENCE.

If true, this is sick. The war crimes committed by the invading army make the whole ‘war on terror’ a hypocritical joke.

It’s even worse when they’re guarding those damnable financial records:

“Weaknesses in DoD’s financial and management controls left it unable to properly account
for $8.7 billion of the $9.1 billion in DFI funds
it received for reconstruction activities in Iraq.”

    From p. 113 [p. 7 within PDF document] of:

And go to p. 129 [p. 23 within the PDF document] for a brief survey of those Army, Air Force, Navy and Marines – mostly officers – who ripped off the US government for millions. Most enlightening.

War is hell? Nope, war is a racket (attributed to Gen. Smedley Butler).

  27. If only they had been on the side of Al-Qaeda, they might have been celebrated as heroes for killing innocents. Unfortunately for them, they’re part of an Army where that kind of behavior isn’t really acceptable.
