African Newspaper Purposefully ‘Outs’ Gays, Suggests Hanging

This is quite a shocker, reported by Godfrey Olukya and Jason Straziuso for AP, especially as it seems to have been instigated by American Christian fundamentalists:

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) — The front-page newspaper story featured a list of Uganda’s 100 “top” homosexuals, with a bright yellow banner across it that read: “Hang Them.” Alongside their photos were the men’s names and addresses.

In the days since it was published, at least four gay Ugandans on the list have been attacked and many others are in hiding, according to rights activist Julian Onziema. One person named in the story had stones thrown at his house by neighbors.

A lawmaker in this conservative African country introduced a bill a year ago that would have imposed the death penalty for some homosexual acts and life in prison for others. An international uproar ensued, and the bill was quietly shelved.

But gays in Uganda say they have faced a year of harassment and attacks since the bill’s introduction.

The legislation was drawn up following a visit by leaders of U.S. conservative Christian ministries that promote therapy they say allows gays to become heterosexual…

  1. Nothing but hate on that continent. We should leave ’em to it, no more aid.

What rubbish. Africa is more than one place you know. As 5 by 5 said you can judge those countries by it’s hateful, violent quotient what would that say about your own country? There are parts of Africa that need our aid now more than ever.

I hope these men are in a position to apply for asylum. They should get somewhere safe and try and enact change from outside. This shit can’t go on

This is the result of our wingnuts going to their country and intentionally misinforming a nation of war-ravaged, AIDS ravaged orphans who have now grown to semi-literate adulthood into blaming gays for their problems, even though that gays had nothing to do with it.Uganda is the amputation capital of the world. The majority of people in Uganda are under the age of 25, have spent decades being terrorized either by dictators like Idi Amin, or by the Christian terrorist group, the “Lord’s Resistance Army” (LRA) which kidnaps children off the street and carves their initials into their chests before turning them into either child soldiers, or sex slaves. They want to create a Christian theocracy. These Americans going there to advance this BS, are part of that creepy religious-political organization/cult on Capital Hill that Jeff Sharlett wrote about, called “The Family”. And it’s very likely that their stupidity is going to get someone killed. If not in anti-gay harassment, then in AIDS transmission, because they’ve also been lying to these people about the effectiveness of condoms. Before we go condemning the Ugandans, we ought to be doing something about the douchebags in our country who are spreading that misinformation to an already devastated and confused country of victims.

To me, these “Family” members just raped these people’s minds.

Wait, the same ‘The Family’ who models their Jesus Christ after Hitler, Pol Pot etc? Are these guys making a concerted effort to be evil or something?

What is this thinking? If all the gays are gone from Uganda it becomes utopia?
It will still be the same violent shithole it is now, only worse. Once the gay people are gone, who will be the next pariah group to persecute and kill? Hating gays because they are gay is the same as hating black people because they are black. What irony…..

This isn’t exclusive to Uganda or Africa. Gays are persecuted though out the middle east also. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad made a comment that there are no gays in Iran.
