Belgian Archbishop Calls AIDS ‘Inherent Justice’

What is it with Catholic clergy? These guys just don’t know when to zip it! From Reuters:

Belgium’s Roman Catholic Church, already reeling from allegations of sexual abuse, faced a new scandal Friday after its primate wrote that AIDS was “a sort of inherent justice.”

Many lawmakers condemned Archbishop Andre-Joseph Leonard, the head of the Belgian church, for the remarks in a new book and Belgium’s center for equal opportunities received a series of complaints, including one by a lawyer who said his comments were incitement to hatred.

The Church is struggling to recover from the resignation of the Bishop of Bruges in April after he admitted sexually abusing a nephew.

In his book “Monseigneur Leonard – Conversations,” the archbishop referred to a remark by the late Pope John Paul II who said, when asked whether AIDS was a punishment from God, that it was difficult to judge God’s will.

“I would not at all think in such terms. I do not see this illness as a punishment, at most a sort of inherent justice, a bit like how we are presented with the bill for what we do to the environment,” Leonard said…

    The concept of justice implies that the guilty are punished. Which makes the Bishop’s statement all the more ironic, considering that the AIDS epidemic began in the Belgian Congo, when researchers used improper procedures in medical experimentation with monkey retro-viruses, then callously tested their formulas containing tainted blood on Africans in villages across the river from the research lab. If this were about “justice” only the Belgian researchers should have died of AIDS, since they were the dipshits who created it. Moreover, if there were any justice, all the priests in the Catholic Church who are irresponsibly telling people around the world that condoms do not prevent AIDS, or that people shouldn’t use condoms because using contraception will lead to hell & damnation ought to get the disease themselves for basically preaching genocide.

    To say such a thing in Africa especially, where there are entire villages of nothing but orphans of the epidemic, is fracking sinful.

    They must be talking about the Old Testament guy…cuz that god was a dick. Guilty or innocent…that dude would commit genocide just to illustrate a point during a conversation. Supposedly he got mellow after he had a kid…but with a track record like that…fuck him…I wouldn’t trust him on general principle…it’d feel like hiring a sex offender as a babysitter

      That brings an interesting question to mind. Just why is it that we haven’t been able to put together a decent schism in the last couple of hundred years? For a good chunk of the church’s history it was well nigh to impossible to say who really was the “legitimate” pope.
