Controversial Charity Paying U.K. Drug Addicts £200 To Be Sterilized

project_preventionIs it eugenics, bribery, or a clever way of fixing social dysfunction? A North Carolina-based charity is paying U.K. drug addicts to be sterilized, with the hope being that it will save money for the taxpayer in the long run. The idea went over swimmingly in the United States but is encountering resistance in Britain. BBC News reports:

The first person in the UK to accept the cash is drug addict “John” from Leicester who says he “should never be a father”.

The move has been criticised by some drug charities who work with addicts. Project Prevention founder Barbara Harris admitted her methods amounted to “bribery”, but said it was the only way to stop babies being physically and mentally damaged by drugs during pregnancy.

Mrs Harris set up her charity in North Carolina after adopting the children of a crack addict. Speaking to the BBC’s Inside Out programme, she said: “The birth mother of my children obviously dabbled in all drugs and alcohol – she literally had a baby every year for eight years…I get very angry about the damage that drugs do to these children.”

this is terrible, stupid, fascism, wrong, they should not allow it, shows how evil the government is, they bring the drugs in and then expect you to sabotage yourself. WHY DON’T THEY STERILIZE THEMSELVES, THE LABOR PARTY OVER THERE, FOR NOT CREATING ANY JOBS

So what happens when those addicts clean themselves up and try to move on in life, but they’ve been sterilized since they were desperate for 200 pounds cash for more drugs, you really think that’s what’s best for people?

This is great. Substance abuse and addiction wreak havoc on individuals, families, and communities for generations.

    1) They’re not being coerced.
    2) They may (and I’ll cautiously bump it to probably) already have children. So if they get in AA/NA later, then they have kids and someone to make amends to.
    3) If anywhere in the back of their minds they’d wanted children, then this may act as the moment of clarity that starts them on the road to recovery.

      “1) They’re not being coerced.”

Except that they’re drug addicts; A crack whore isn’t exactly being coerced, but her addiction is definitely being exploited against her interests. Same thing here.

We can’t bubble wrap the world to make it safe for junkies until they get their lives together. It is dehumanizing to rob people’s lives of the consequences of their actions (even if those actions occurred after they’ve been swept away by booze, pills, and evil powders).

Number of people that use illegal drugs are now increase so we need to focus on this kind of situation. We should organized an event for addicts and influence them into other habit like playing sports and etc. We can also teach them on how to help for charity.
