    Thanks. This was awesome.

I remember when Lennon first hit my consciousness: the day he went to his reward. I remember waking up that cold winter morning, shuffling into the kitchen, and finding the newspaper front page splashed with a photo of a shattered pair of glasses on the New York pavement.

My family was kinda backward about cultural things. While I knew there was some pop star named John Lennon, and that he’d been part of some group called the Beatles at some point, that’s all I knew. The radio in my house never played that stuff. We’d much more likely have something like “The Battle of New Orleans” by Johnny Horton playing than any of that “long haired, hippy shit” as my old man would say.

So as I read that article the question gradually came upon me: “Why’d this happen? What did Lennon ever do to deserve THIS?” I re-read, and re-re-read the article, but I couldn’t find a satisfactory answer. So I undertook a more rigorous effort, and what started out a puzzled curiosity grew into a decades-long research and untarnished admiration for this great man’s artistic, political and just plain human acheivement.

I never really figured out just why such a courageous fighter for the best of human values had to be killed by a lone, confused gunman. But then again, does that bit really matter? What really matters is his living legacy, how a working class hero can capture the world’s attention and struggle to make it a better place.

Growing up, John and the rest of teh Beatles were in heavy rotation around my house. Mom had the old LPs…Dad had a few on reel to reel…and I listened to them every day along with CCR, Johnny Cash, Roy Acuff, Chet Atkins and most of the Woodstock album.

Of all of them, John Lennon stood largest in my mind. The most controversial, the most sought after, the most often spoken of for better or worse…

…and then he was gone…because someone in a very unstable state of mind snuffed out his light…and we’re all a little poorer for the loss.
