Mom Kills Baby Over FarmVille

Tobias_20101028115309_320_240Hate to say it, but I’m surprised a “FarmVille-related family killing” hasn’t happened before — I’m calling it the start of a trend in American homes. The Florida Times-Union reports on a mother who killed her baby after its crying interfered with her playing the Facebook-based game:

A Jacksonville mother charged with shaking her baby to death has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.

Alexandra V. Tobias, 22, was arrested after the January death of 3-month-old Dylan Lee Edmondson. She told investigators she became angry because the baby was crying while she was playing a computer game called FarmVille on the Facebook social-networking website.

Tobias entered her plea Wednesday before Circuit Judge Adrian G. Soud. A second-degree murder charge is punishable by up to life in prison.

Prosecutor Richard Mantei said Tobias’ sentence could be less because of state guidelines that call for 25 to 50 years. Soud offered no promises on what he’ll order during a sentencing hearing scheduled for December.

Tobias told investigators that she shook the baby, smoked a cigarette to compose herself and then shook him again. She said the baby may have hit his head during the shaking.

    • Yeah, because sometimes rape can be a good thing.

        • Do you support the death penalty? It seems to me that would be a much more humane punishment.

          • Agreed. Death Penalty. On the scale of violence, death may be more final, but it’s less an abuse of humanity than torture. In my opinion anyway.

          • Actually…I don’t support the death penalty…for two reasons1) because the innocent cannot be raised from the grave after being accidentally killed by an inefficient state2) I’m really a very cruel person toward the guilty…death is an easy freedom I wouldn’t give some people…let them live a lifetime sentence in hell…then be permitted to die of old age, alone, wallowing in utter misery

Who cares if her punishment is humane? What she did to her baby wasn’t humane. Let the punishment match the crime! Bring out the “thick-wristed, angry lesbian with a taste for S&M,” as VoxMagi put it!

          • The baby wasn’t raped or sexually assaulted. If you want the punishment to fit the crime, Tobias should be shaken to death. Sexualizing her punishment is a perverse inhumanity even she lacked.

  4. Yeah, because sometimes rape can be a good thing.

In her defense, she didn’t kill the baby on purpose. She’s a young 22 year old mother who made the mistake of shaking her baby to get it to quiet down. That’s a horrible, stupid thing to do, but I highly doubt she had the intent to kill her own child. She’ll have to live with this the rest of her life.

    • She has a reason. It’s understandable. And it’s not excusable.

While I’m inclined to say that she should get the death penalty for this (she did take the life of an innocent after all), I think that letting her live with the remorse would also suck for her. Assuming (and it’s a good bet that) she has a conscience.

      • Uncle Twinkle-toes | Oct 28, 2010 at 11:18 pm |

Well she shook her baby, then took a break, and shook it again because of a stupid cheap online flash game. I don’t think she’ll feel that much remorse if she doesn’t have some sort of terrible punishment looming over her head.

    • She smoked a frigging cigarette and then shook the baby some more after the first time she shook it! She killed her baby over a fucking game! Don’t defend fiends and the damned! What kind of stupid person are you?

The death penalty is to easy of a sentence. She needs to be tortured. A child is way more important than a goddamn game! Shame on anyone who would defend such a horrible person! This whore deserves years of torture and torment both mentally and physical!

    • Speaking as 24 year old mother of a two year, when you become a parent time, consuming video games take a backseat to your child. This isn’t a gentle rocking she gave this baby. It was a violent, prolonged and REPEATED attack on a small child. Death’s too good for her. She said the baby may have hit his head during the shaking? She mostly likely never wanted the baby and didn’t honestly care if it was hurt.

    • Uncle Twinkle-toes | Oct 28, 2010 at 11:08 pm |

Really now? I think you have enough common sense at the age of 22 to know not to shake your baby enough to kill it, or at all for that matter. And the only justified thing would be if she was extremely unstable and even then that’s still not a very good excuse.

    • Baby_Pantera | Oct 28, 2010 at 11:21 pm |

Age is not really an excuse. Just another in a long list of reasons that people need to take some kind of parental fitness test before having a child. If they fail-Abortion. On the house.

As much as “shaken baby syndrome” has been talked about and used in crime drama scripts over the years, I don’t think there’s a person over 15 in the country who doesn’t know how dangerous and potentially deadly it is to shake a baby. She didn’t just shake the child. She shook him, smoked a cigarette, then shook him again. It was malicious, deliberate, and completely over the top. Has to live with it the rest of her life? The first time she shook him, it was spontaneous. The second time was premeditated! She had time to think about it and did it anyway. The charge should have been first degree murder.

This is a general response to everyone:

First of all, according to Darwin’s Natural Selection, this “incident” will only help to produce babies with stronger neck muscles.

Second, her intent was not to kill the child. This fits along the lines of people who kill someone by causing an accident while texting in a car or drinking before driving. It’s common sense that you shouldn’t do it, but you do it anyway thinking that you won’t kill anyone. She wanted quiet time, not to kill her child. Sure she is stupid, but she isn’t a danger to anyone. Even having her in jail for life is a huge waste of tax dollars. She isn’t going to walk down the street and start shaking random babies. She should never be allowed to have children or small animals, but I doubt she is dangerous. And using jail as a means of punishment for someone who isn’t a threat to society could not only be ineffective, it could make her worse.

IMHO, she needs to have her uterus removed, spend some confined time in a mental hospital, be required to attend regular therapy sessions, do lots of community service, and be banned from the internet for life.

  12. True, but since the baby was only a few months old, but had a different name than its mother, I thought maybe she (it?) was just watching the baby.

  13. Ban Farmville!!

Terrible and tragic, but look at the bright side. This sorry excuse for a human being eliminated her genes from the pool in the process. Let’s hope she is put in jail until she’s to old to reproduce.

It’s really important to note that FarmVille has nothing whatsoever to do with this, really. The woman was clearly unfit to be a parent, and this tragedy could’ve happened at any time for any reason she could invent. There’s no legitimate reason to headline this “Mom Kills Baby Over FarmVille,” other than trying to pull in readers of two types: FarmVille players and people who think video games are evil.

It isn’t the game itself. It’s the hidden messages among the crops, the subliminal messages in the audio, and the mind-numbing boredom that gets people hooked and drives them insane, then plants evil thoughts in the player’s head that are generated by the moon people who are trying to keep earthlings from stealing their water.

I agree that farmville had nothing to do with it. This woman would have probably done the same thing over any other game, or tv show at that matter. It was just a crime waiting to happen. I think the death penalty should be enforced in certain cases but in hers, let someone repeatedly hurt her for the rest of her life. No freedom, no privacy, no way of escaping harm, block walls all around her! I have two children, both under 3 and it is difficult and stressful but in no way would I harm my children. She intended to harm him, maybe not that day but it was bound to happen sooner or later.
