Prison Interview with Glenn Beck-Inspired Gunman

Glenn BeckIn 2008 a Unitarian congregation in Tennessee was fired upon by a reported devotee of Bill O’Reilly, Sean Hannity and Michael Savage. In the shadow of last summer’s “ground-zero mosque” controversy, a NYC cab driver’s throat was slashed after he identified himself as a Muslim.

Were these the acts of disturbed individuals, already predisposed toward violence, or the natural outcome of so much inflammatory rhetoric being injected into the national discourse? Are hateful demagogues in any way responsible for the criminality of those who take them seriously?

John Hamilton of Media Matters raises these questions in a new piece, in which he interviews Byron Williams, a jailed gunman who credits Glenn Beck and Fox for inspiring his ill-fated insurrection against the Tides Foundation and ACLU.

    Harsh lesson…tests our commitment to free speech…which is hardly free in a purely commercial driven, ad revenue guided, corporate owned media culture. Incitement to violence is one issue…but to a certain degree I accept Beck and Limbaugh and Hannity and the rest as the price to pay for the freedom to refute them. Of course, I resent the financial difference between their backers and their medium (Faux Noise) and the rest of the world…which squeaks along at the corners of the internet or holds up a poster outside their local city hall. I’m not sure corporate speech should be free…because if you take away the money and the ads they’re still free to speak…like the rest of us…unfunded and with a single voice, in public and in private…all they lose is the massive advantage of wealth and media access…not the actual freedom to speak.

One of the most important Goebels quotes (In my opinion)… Not sure if I’m word for word but… “The media is a keyboard on which the government can play to the people”. Nobody gets it. They are too preoccupied with Lindsay Lohan the coke whore and Katie Perry showing a small amount of cleavage on fucking Sesame Street. Can anyone say bread circus? Beck sometimes has something intelligent to say, but he just rips off Alex Jones… (Alex is…ok, he does get a lot of important news out in a timely manner, but he’s a total fear salesman…. Fucking media lords… And people find their publications to be believable and unbiased??? HAH.
