It is, isn’t it? Remember when you first read the Principia Discordia, or the Illuminatus! Trilogy? Oh, we were all Discordians back in the day…still am, in a sense, although I’ve given up the polygamy of chaos magic for a nice, stable relationship with a diety no one has worshipped in any organized fashion for at least a thousand years.

To me, this looks like an extended meditation on the centrality of ambiguity and challenge (specifically of the horror/revulsion varieties) to aesthetic and spiritual experience.

Oh there just might be something here for everyone. Literalist ‘common sense lanuage theorists’ like Wittgenstein would have not been naive enough to take this for anything other than an attempt at a cultural paradigm shift. Beavis and Butthead’s only complaint would be that there wasn’t enuf chix and too meny wordz. But Derrida would have eaten this shit up with a spoon.

Damn, amn’t I just flowing with the baloney today?

That’s it. No more Disinfo. This site has become an insult to the reader’s intelligence. How am I supposed to take the few remaining legitimate articles seriously when time is given to this drivel? You’d think this garbage wouldn’t be posted after the reaction to the last “Book” from this failed “artist”…

To the other readers: If you are interested in the few legitimate topics discussed here, go buy actual books, read professional journals, get involved in local/regional/higher politics or otherwise take real action to further your personal goals or make the changes you seek in the world around you. Get off of this trash website and do something. This website has degraded to the point that it does more harm than good to the truth-seeking, independent thinkers that it was supposed to cater to. Adios fellas.

For those of us with better things to do than wade through several pages of bullshit writing and crappy graphic design, would somebody, perhaps the actual author, care to give some sort of (WRITTEN! IN PLAIN WORDS) synopsis?

I confess to being too intellectually lazy to just go through the whole thing and get whatever “deep” message is supposed to be embedded in there, but perhaps if I had some idea of what it is I would re-evaluate my decision to give up and declare it senseless crap. Sorry if that shits all over the art, or whatever, but I’m a firm believer that any artist who lacks the ability to tell the uninitiated what their art is about and why it is meaningful is just a poseur, and any artist who is unwilling is just a pretentious ass. So how about it?

    • Gregory

Butter Knife, no offense, really. But why are you checking out Disinfo.com if you want everything to be explained “chapter and verse” to you? The whole point of Disinfo.com is to post various news items and such in a wide range of topics and view points, some of which run counter to the intellectual positions of the founders of Disinfo, so that we get a lot of raw material to glean from, but it is up to us, the consumers of the content on Disinfo to make our own judgments and conclusions, hopefully being able to do that correctly.

Disinfo is about getting something from nothing, in this case, the nothing is all the “disinformation” coming from the Consensus Reality. You are one who apparently wants the world to say what it means and expects people who may have some insight to just come out and say it. That shows a misunderstanding of the purpose of Disinfo and a misunderstanding of Reality. We cannot have a direct experience of reality because everything we perceive is filtered through the subjective mechanisms of our limited senses. Even language is subjective and we can’t simply look at grass without being bombarded with the descriptions of it that seek to control what we think about grass. If we are the ones who make the grass green through our limited perceptions, how are we to experience reality itself if we expect it to just say what it means, when we don’t really know what grass means, only what we’ve been told what it means via language and the totalitarian dictates of our limited senses?

No, we can’t just tell you Truth, it has to seep in when you’re not paying attention and we can’t just pour Truth into your brain because our nervous systems can’t handle it except in small doses.

What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly.

      fiat lux

      • Tuna Ghost

Dude, c’mon. Let’s not pretend this hasn’t been ripped off from half a dozen other (better) authors. Every couple months he posts something like this, something vapid and self-indulgent and artistically bankrupt. We’re allowed to get sick of it.

        • Gregory

TG, I find your horror at people “regurgitating” certain ideas fascinating. You’ve expressed this sentiment many times before on this fine website. So RAW and Grant Morrison and etc have said certain things but no one else is allowed to express similar views or expound or otherwise mention them? Do you not reckon we should be spreading certain views around to counter all the groups that just want to control us rather than liberate us? Don’t you think we should go tell it on the mountain? When there is a 24 hour news channel dedicated to the occult, then I can understand you getting sick about it.

Isn’t it just as likely that the repetition of certain ideas means that we’re beginning to build a castle (even if it is made of sand) of Truth?

Or, and I hate to flame, maybe all this is just above your head and calling it “vapid and self-indulgent and artistically bankrupt” is a defense mechanism when you are faced with difficult ideas you’ve heard before, but have yet to be able to digest them? I’ll ask the same question I asked of Butter Knife…what are you doing hanging around Disinfo if your response to something like this is just to say it should be tossed in the wastebasket? That’s black and white, right and wrong, good and bad thinking, which is how the fascists want you to respond to things, in simplistic terms. I admit to see no good in say, Adam Sandler for example, but I also know he’s a person in the same rowboat as the rest of us.

Butter Knife used another codeword that nay-sayers use: pretentious. Which is one of the most misused words today. Ambitious is the word that more often fits. I don’t feel this work is “pretending” to be anything other than what it is, if you feel it fails in its objective, then some objective criticism would be more helpful. I admit the work appears a bit naive and is a collage of other ideas, but I don’t see how that makes it wrong…or untrue, even if it is a pack of damn lies.

          fiat lux

          • gemmarama

what is the use of “spreading ideas” if those ideas are are presented in such an adolescent, unoriginal, cliched and half-arsed manner? i certainly don’t need complicated concepts reduced to soundbites and dated, mediocre, “alternative” artwork. what the hell are “they” to think of us if this is really the best we can come up with?

there is nothing “difficult” about the content or style (fisher price “my first occult”) of the above – save perhaps the glaring typos – and to suggest otherwise is just patronising, and something of a rhetorical fallacy.

making a value judgement is not fascist. this is the kind of counter-productive hippy bullshit that infuriates me. just because you are right-on doesn’t mean you have to abandon your critical faculties.

the above post IS pretentious as obviously this guy regards himself as some kind of crowley-style seer sent to enlighten us all to stuff that most of us are perfectly aware of already.

            pretentious: –adjective
            1. full of pretense or pretension.
            2. characterized by assumption of dignity or importance.
            3. making an exaggerated outward show; ostentatious.

trying and failing is one thing. trying, failing, but thinking you have created an artistic masterpiece is another.

perhaps you are a juvenile third-rate millionaire comedian and can identify with him in some way, but i certainly do not consider adam sandler to be “in the same rowboat” as me.

          • GoodDoktorBad

I have to give the artist/ author some credit for his creation. Ultimatly, every idea is a regurgitated one.
If you find his work pretentious (I also find it somewhat annoying), its only fair to realize that ALL of our individual comments in this thread are also more or less equally pretentious on some level.
I try to mediate my responses with this in mind. ……and of course I fail often enough.

Between you and Tuna I’d say your over all condemning tone regarding the post is frankly mean spirited and counter productive…..

i’m a critical person, that i’ll admit, especially when it comes to subjects close to my heart. i have a degree in art history and a bookcase full of occult literature so i reckon i know what i’m talking about here.

seven star should be proud of something – this must be one of the most commented-on posts in disinfo history…

          • GoodDoktorBad

I just think the comments here are mainly only discussing the negative aspects of the post. It disturbs me to see that kind of stone-walling attitude on this site. I expect more -here. I’m obviously naive in that regard.

          • .>>

Wow, Gregory, if I could sustain your level of coherence – I’d be unstoppable!! And your comment on my naïveté is certainly understandable – I am the first one to admit my outlook is ultimately one of youthful optimism. And there is no reason not to have such a perspective. The history of the world is the story of people making a difference – some good, some bad – but I absolutely refuse to believe I am immune to such recognition.

So, here’s the REAL synopsis of the K.oM. BOOK0: The Link between Art & Magic, is a single, Universal Mind. Simple.

Is it a reinterpretation of countless other ‘occult theories’? Absolutely. Do I reduce thousands of years of mysticism to its most base and simplest terms? In order to gain broader mass appeal. . ? You better fucking believe it.

      • Liam_McGonagle

Well, yeah, this stuff is pretty derivative.

And yeah, I wouldn’t expect the author to invest a lot of energy in defending / explaining it.

But you do have to admit that this stuff is tolerable at least on 3 grounds:

        1. It smokes out the people REALLY in need of some remedial art appreciation courses.

        2. It at least makes demonstrates some appreciation for the importance of transgressiveness in art, even if it doesn’t really achieve it itself.

        3. It’s a damn sight better than some mouldy old Norman Rockwell shit.

        • dumbsaint

I’ll agree on points 1 and 2. Far be it from me to defend Norman Rockwell but digital art should be about a lot more than Layer Options. Rockwell might have been a borderline pedo but at least he could draw. What made the early photoshop collage guys good was that they were almost like installations. There’d be sculpture, purposeful photography, chunky oils etc which were collected together in photoshop. Now-days there’s tablets and all sorts of other things you can use to display your technical worthiness.

          • Liam_McGonagle

Okay, maybe I see your point of view a bit better now. I don’t think I’m releasing any national secrets when I say that I’m not a digital artist myself and that I’ve never had a digital art-specific appreciation course.

I think you may be saying that you’re disgusted with this fellow’s lack of technical novelty and sophistication. Those are two points I am left to evaluate in a totally naive way, ’cause as I say, I’ve never really explored the issue in a specifically digital context.

But I suppose I’m not the only one in that boat. It’s hard for me to understand some of the posts here, but I think you’re the only one who’s raised specific deficiencies to technique up to this point.

Ironically, my condemnation of Rockwell also centered on technique, though with regard to its utter lack of novelty rather than its sophistication. I agree Rockwell had more technical drafting skill than I’ll ever possess. It’s just hard for me to understand why he didn’t just go into photo composition.

And I agree he was politically retrograde, if that’s what you meant to imply. I didn’t know about any pedaphaelia accusations, though.

          • dumbsaint

I can be a bit of a curmudgeon about it but digital art really suffers from laziness. It’s an exciting medium but is struggling to be taken seriously. It’s no big deal really to see something like this on a website, but people do try and exhibit similarly constructed works. (I’d not have entered the fray if not for the OP flashing his ‘artist’ badge to dispel criticism.). I totally agree with you on Rockwell to be honest. He’s the other side of the coin – great vocabulary but uses it to talk about kids in short shorts.

Merely tossing back your snobbish phrasing from times gone by. I don’t generally use the word “adorable” unless I actually mean it as a compliment.
Besides, unless you are the person who invented sarcasm and rhetorical devices – I have borrowed only from the english language -not you…..Tuna Boast.

When I first discovered Discordia I immediately labeled everyone who called themselves “Discordians” posers. And that’s as true today as it was 8 years ago. You smell like death, Tuna Ghost.

And for the rest of you who want to cling to the past; go read THE BIBLE if you want to learn the REAL TRUTH about God & Morality. *feh*

Thank you for your contribution to this discussion thread!

I’m a ghost of a fish, buddy. You’re lucky I ONLY smell like death. Of course Discordia is a pose, expecting it to be anything else is a mistake.

I admit the work appears a bit naive and is a collage of other ideas, but I don’t see how that makes it wrong…or untrue, even if it is a pack of damn lies.

what is the use of “spreading ideas” if those ideas are are presented in such an adolescent, unoriginal, cliched and half-arsed manner? i certainly don’t need complicated concepts reduced to soundbites and dated, mediocre, “alternative” artwork. what the hell are “they” to think of us if this is really the best we can come up with?

there is nothing “difficult” about the content or style (fisher price “my first occult”) of the above – save perhaps the glaring typos – and to suggest otherwise is just patronising, and something of a rhetorical fallacy.

making a value judgement is not fascist. this is the kind of counter-productive hippy bullshit that infuriates me. just because you are right-on doesn’t mean you have to abandon your critical faculties.

the above post IS pretentious as obviously this guy regards himself as some kind of crowley-style seer sent to enlighten us all to stuff that most of us are perfectly aware of already.

    pretentious: –adjective
    1. full of pretense or pretension.
    2. characterized by assumption of dignity or importance.
    3. making an exaggerated outward show; ostentatious.

trying and failing is one thing. trying, failing, but thinking you have created an artistic masterpiece is another.

perhaps you are a juvenile third-rate millionaire comedian and can identify with him in some way, but i certainly do not consider adam sandler to be “in the same rowboat” as me.

  • .>>

At least I can respect the guy who said this is absolute shit. So you want a synopsis? Fine. Here goes…

    Hi, I’m an Artist.

  • Anonymous

I have to give the artist/ author some credit for his creation. Ultimatly, every idea is a regurgitated one.
If you find his work pretentious (I also find it somewhat annoying), its only fair to realize that ALL of our individual comments in this thread are also more or less equally pretentious on some level.
I try to mediate my responses with this in mind. ……and of course I fail often enough.

Between you and Tuna I’d say your over all condemning tone regarding the post is frankly mean spirited and counter productive…..

  • gemmarama

i believe freedom of speech is protected under your country’s constitution.

seven star has a right to post whatever he wants. i have a right to say it’s crap. and you have a right to disagree with me.

    that’s all.

  • Anonymous

I’ve made no attempt to censor you -nor could I if I wanted to. I usually find your comments more balanced. Your obviously an intelligent person, worthy of respect -and I show you respect via honest discussion.
    That’s all……..

  • gemmarama

sure, and right back atcha as far as the compliment goes.

i just think you’re being a little precious about tuna and i’s comments, and i know you two have a history of beef…

i’m a critical person, that i’ll admit, especially when it comes to subjects close to my heart. i have a degree in art history and a bookcase full of occult literature so i reckon i know what i’m talking about here.

seven star should be proud of something – this must be one of the most commented-on posts in disinfo history…

  • GoodDoktorBad

Kudos to the author for stirring up so much vitriol in this discussion thread. The haters seem to have all come out to play for this one. Welcome to the troll convention….

I just think the comments here are mainly only discussing the negative aspects of the post. It disturbs me to see that kind of stone-walling attitude on this site. I expect more -here. I’m obviously naive in that regard.

  • Anonymous

Then here’s some advice for you: learn to take criticism now as what you’re reading here is a cakewalk.

  • Anonymous

  • .>>

Noted. I’ve been getting flammed on the internet for nearly 10 years now for my pretentious ramblings – the only difference is – now i get it on DISINFO.COM!! yay me.

So here’s to all you cynics, critics and complainers accusing me of being a pretentious thief… EA™3!!!

  • Anonymous

I can be a bit of a curmudgeon about it but digital art really suffers from laziness. It’s an exciting medium but is struggling to be taken seriously. It’s no big deal really to see something like this on a website, but people do try and exhibit similarly constructed works. (I’d not have entered the fray if not for the OP flashing his ‘artist’ badge to dispel criticism.). I totally agree with you on Rockwell to be honest. He’s the other side of the coin – great vocabulary but uses it to talk about kids in short shorts.

This was a true pleasure to read. I think you should write another!

I might buy the book, too, does it have the illustrations?
