Thousands Of Stimulus Checks Went To The Deceased And Incarcerated

Someone didn’t check their list twice to  see who was naughty or dead. From The Washington Post.:

The federal government last year sent about 89,000 checks of $250 each to dead or incarcerated people through the Obama administration’s economic stimulus program, according to a watchdog report.

The Social Security Administration distributed about $13 billion to 52 million eligible beneficiaries in the form of $250 checks as part of the economic recovery program. The program cost $814 billion. Most of the payments were issued properly, but SSA failed to check all available payment records or was unaware that beneficiaries had died, according to a report by the Social Security Office of Inspector General.

Although SSA lacks the authority to recoup most of the money, the report estimates that slightly more than half of the payments have been returned.

Um, someone’s blowing a gasket over this? This is literally 0.0159% of federal receipts for 2009. The REAL story is how corps defrauded individual tax payers of $321 TRILLION.*

    * For real. Check it out. In 1965 federal receipts from corps were 21.8% of total; in 2009 they were 6.6%. In 1965 federal receipts from individuals were 41.8% of the total; in 2009 they were 43.5%.

Of course you’re right, but look at the source. There should be little surprise. The Washington Post is neo-conservative propaganda for the corporate class. I bet every lobbyist on K street reads it religiously.

I’m surprised that many found their way back. Of course…individual stimulus checks are a fart in a windtunnel in the first place. Jobs, jobs, jobs…federally created or otherwise…jobs with wages are the ONLY way out of the hole. Giving billionaires ANOTHER break…following up on the heels of all the other breaks they’ve been given over the last 30 years…is like saying the cure for cancer is more cancer. Billionaires shop…but not the way ten thousand employed people shop. Want to see a massive trickle up in the economy with big spending in consumer retail purchases??? GIVE PEOPLE JOBS!

Exactly. A stimulus check is just a stop-gap measure. We should be creating massive public works projects (the infrastructure badly needs repair anyways) just as renovating the national electrical grid so that it will accept micro-power generation not just generation from big corps, or building a national high-speed rail system, or electric charging stations along the nation’s highways — in order to dig up out of this Depression the same way that we got out of the last Depression.

Government aid DOES work –for instance, for every $5 of food stamp money you give out, $9 worth is generated in the larger economy.

But nothing works as well as giving people good, solid jobs. That’s what government is there for, to pick up the slack and secure the health and welfare of the Commons when business interests fall down.

Of course, it’s also there to REGULATE those business interesting so that Capitalism is rational and doesn’t spin out of control in the first place, and on that score, thanks to the failed ideology that is Conservatism, the government fell down on the job. Clearly, people who don’t believe in the American government, shouldn’t be running it.
