George W. Bush: The Insult By Kanye West Was The Worst Moment of My Presidency

Kayne West & Mike MyersReally, Mr. President? Needless to say, there was a day in September that was pretty bad for the country. (And also a mega-disaster that precipitated West’s comment and to this day leaves many Americans displaced from their homes.) Wow, of all places, looks like Ken Tucker in Entertainment Weekly has broken this story:

President George W. Bush says that when he heard Kanye West say, “George Bush doesn’t care about black people,” “it was one of the most disgusting moments in my presidency.”

Bush has taped an interview with Matt Lauer that will air on a special prime-time Matt Lauer Reports on NBC Nov. 8. It’s to promote his forthcoming book, Decision Points. The subjects of the interview are wide-ranging, but the former president is very passionate on the subject of West’s criticism of the way Bush handled the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. NBC has released some quotations from the interview.

“He called me a racist,” Bush tells Lauer. “And I didn’t appreciate it then. I don’t appreciate it now. It’s one thing to say, ‘I don’t appreciate the way he’s handled his business.’ It’s another thing to say, ‘This man’s a racist.’ I resent it, it’s not true.”

Lauer quotes from Bush’s new book: “Five years later I can barely write those words without feeling disgust.” Lauer adds, “You go on: ‘I faced a lot of criticism as president. I didn’t like hearing people claim that I lied about Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction or cut taxes to benefit the rich. But the suggestion that I was racist because of the response to Katrina represented an all-time low.’

Actually, he said “one of the most disgusting”, that’s far from “worst”. I dont like the guy either but you shouldnt twist the truth, because then you’re no better than him, or the corporate controlled media you claim to stand against. I used to really dig this site, but lately it’s all opinion and little fact. Bias and twisted truths instead of reporting on things regular media overlooks. So yeah, I won’t be following this site anymore. It’s been a long time coming. And while I’m no Bush fan by FAR, I don’t like outlets that blatantly twist facts to fit their own agenda. I get enough of that with mainstream media. And you’ve been doing that for awhile now and I’m over it. Thanks for the good times disinfo, but I’m out.

I’ll quote it here again because must not have been clear:”I faced a lot of criticism as president. I didn’t like hearing people claim that I lied about Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction or cut taxes to benefit the rich. But the suggestion that I was racist because of the response to Katrina represented an all-time low.”Wouldn’t “all-time low” imply the worst?

I also find it fascinating that an entertainment magazine is breaking this story.

All time low is directed at the comments people made about him. The headline and lead claim that Dubya said it was the worst moment of his presidency. Furthermore, the statement in the headline is in quotation marks, which presents it as a direct quote by Bush.

Bush made enough idiotic comments on his own. There is no need to make up more of them.

Read a little more of the source article. I agree that EW should not put this phrase in quotes, but it’s clear that President Bush feels this was the worst moment he experienced:

President Bush: “Yeah. I still feel that way as you read those words. I felt ‘em when I heard ‘em, felt ‘em when I wrote ‘em, and I felt ‘em when I’m listening to ‘em.

Lauer: “You say you told Laura at the time it was the worst moment of your presidency?”

Bush: “Yes. My record was strong, I felt, when it came to race relations and giving people a chance. And it was a disgusting moment.”

          • Honu

Here’s the thing about Bush pretending he’s not racist. All you really have to consider is what would Bush have done if the same kind of disaster happened to Kennebunkport or somewhere in Texas near his endless brush producing ranch? If a bunch of wealthy white people’s homes were wiped out by a flood, I doubt very much he would have done his little flyover. I don’t give rat’s ass one about this lying murdering thief’s feelings.

          • Andrew

I’m not sure Bush is racist. It’s poor people he doesn’t care about. I doubt he has any problem with the rich black people he knows, like Condi and Colin.

“So yeah, I won’t be following this site anymore.”

“I used to really dig this site, but lately it’s all opinion and little fact.”

I’ve seen these exact phrases 3 or 4 times in the past few weeks. Looks like someone’s trolling Disinfo. But to what end?

Disinfo has ALWAYS posted marginal and “outsider” opinions on a number of subjects. Sure there is a lot of good matierial on the site, but there is a lot of material posted on here solely for our entertainment and perhaps even a chuckle, cynical or otherwise. If you’re not a troll, you should lighten up. Seriously.

Actually, if you click on the link and continue reading the article you will see that in his book he did in fact refer to it as the “worst” moment during his presidency when speaking to his wife. If you cannot even be bothered to read the complete article, why are you getting so upset about what you percieved as a misleading headline? It seems to me you read as far as the word “disgusting” and stopped there. I’m sure Disinfo won’t miss people who leave negative comments about articles they didn’t even fully read.

It been really difficult to ascertain just what old GW cares about. I’d have to agree with Kanye to some degree, however reluctantly……I’m no fan of his “music” or public personna, but I’ll give him credit for having one or two active brain cells….

No surprises there. 9/11 was the best moment of his presidency (for him and BP, and Halliburton, and Blackwater, etc…). It made everything else he did possible.
