Texas May End Medicaid

PERRY ENDORSEMENTWith conservative politicians riding high on their broad electoral success, red-dominated regions of the country are already considering sweeping changes: in Texas, lawmakers are debating the possibility of opting out of the federal Medicaid program. Will this mark the start of a trend of right-wing states, fed up with the federal government, seeking to withdraw and “go it alone”? From the Texas Tribune:

Some Republican lawmakers — still reveling in Tuesday’s statewide election sweep — are proposing an unprecedented solution to the state’s estimated $25 billion budget shortfall: dropping out of the federal Medicaid program.

Far-right conservatives are offering that possibility in post-victory news conferences. Moderate Republicans are studying it behind closed doors. And the party’s advisers on health care policy say it’s being discussed more seriously than ever, though they admit it may be as much a huge in-your-face to Washington as anything else.

“With Obamacare mandates coming down, we have a situation where we cannot reduce benefits or change eligibility” to cut costs, said State Rep. Warren Chisum, R-Pampa, the veteran conservative lawmaker who recently entered the race for speaker of the Texas House. “This system is bankrupting our state,” he said. “We need to get out of it. And with the budget shortfall we’re anticipating, we may have to act this year.”

The Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank, estimates Texas could save $60 billion between 2013 and 2019 by opting out of Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program, dropping coverage for acute care but continuing to fund long-term care services. The Texas Health and Human Services Commission, which has 3.6 million children, people with disabilities and impoverished Texans enrolled in Medicaid and CHIP, will release its own study on the effect of ending the state’s participation in the federal match program at some point between now and January.

State Rep. John Zerwas, R-Simonton, an anesthesiologist who authored the bill commissioning the Medicaid study, said early indications are that dropping out of the program would have a tremendous ripple effect monetarily. He is not ready to discount the idea, he said, but he worries about who would carry the burden of care without Medicaid’s “financial mechanism.”

“Because of the substantial amount of matching money that comes from the federal government, there’s an economic impact that comes from that,” Zerwas said. “If we start to look at what that impact is, we have to consider whether it’s feasible to not participate.”

My sister has so many problems and we rely on medicaid, here in Texas, to keep her alive. If they do get rid of it…. she will die. She’ll be dead before 1 year….. fuck you conservatives.

I hope they do it. Maybe people need to see what “small government” really looks like before they’ll begin to think differently.

The red states are the ones where the beaches are covered in oil and where the gutters are filled with the corpses of their poor and elderly. *g*

Except that societies under hardship like that usually become more extreme, not less.

Somalia has very little government and no taxes. I suggest Americans of the Tea Party movement actually pay the country a visit before deciding whether their utopia is really that ideal.

The irony is, I used to work at a charity that worked in many of these impoverished countries, and it didn’t escape my notice that when I happened to get sick, it took me longer to get health care for my illness (jumping through corporate health insurance stupidity) than it was taking us to deliver health aid to Kenyans in the middle of a riot or Afghans after the earthquake.

Proving yet again just how stupid Rick “Gee Your Hair Smells Terrific” Perry and the Texas Legislature are. When people start dying, I hope they personally sue the legislators for democide.

I’ve made the comparison before and I’ll make it again…as often as needed until the need goes away…

there are great examples of free markets and loose, weak central authority…we call them third world nations.

The question is do we want want to crawl down into the muck and emulate the ideal of Haiti…or do we want to climb higher and reach upwards toward something better? Thats all there has ever been to this. And I’m down with maybe having to live in an America that crashes and burns…because maybe that really is what it will take for people to wake up and get back to fighting for the basic rights and expectations that their great grand parents damned near died trying to achieve and leave for us…and which we take for granted as our due. Those niceties and comforts have to be earned, fought for, paid for and vigorously protected against sharpers and snake oil salesmen….and if they aren’t…if we don’t…we will lose them.
