Cuban Medics in Haiti Put the World to Shame

Cuba In HaitiNina Lakhani writes in the Indepedent:

They are the real heroes of the Haitian earthquake disaster, the human catastrophe on America’s doorstep which Barack Obama pledged a monumental US humanitarian mission to alleviate. Except these heroes are from America’s arch-enemy Cuba, whose doctors and nurses have put US efforts to shame.

A medical brigade of 1,200 Cubans is operating all over earthquake-torn and cholera-infected Haiti, as part of Fidel Castro’s international medical mission which has won the socialist state many friends, but little international recognition.

Observers of the Haiti earthquake could be forgiven for thinking international aid agencies were alone in tackling the devastation that killed 250,000 people and left nearly 1.5 million homeless. In fact, Cuban healthcare workers have been in Haiti since 1998, so when the earthquake struck the 350-strong team jumped into action. And amid the fanfare and publicity surrounding the arrival of help from the US and the UK, hundreds more Cuban doctors, nurses and therapists arrived with barely a mention. Most countries were gone within two months, again leaving the Cubans and Médecins Sans Frontières as the principal healthcare providers for the impoverished Caribbean island.

B-b-b-b-b-but, they’re *gasp* SOCIALISTS!?!?!?!?!?!?! Everyone knows that Socialists and other commie scum are greedy, selfish assholes who hate the American Capitalist vakues of cooperation, team work, generosity and caring.

    • grooveboss

cooperation, team work, generosity and caring. this is socialism. Capitalism has socialism as its core and has the free market at its edges. UMM BURN

      • StZed

LOL @ groove…. actually capitalism is an economic ideology that has time and time again shown itself opposed to humanist/leftist political philosophies… It is an insidious and pervasive force that contradicts human rights and the rights of mother earth. I am not sure how you can reconcile socialism and capitalism unless you are a neo-lib social democrat (greece) or a free market state-capitalist (china) both of which prove themselves to be deeply contrary to democracy( which is a feature of ALL left and far left ideologies). capitalism started as a reaction to aristrocrats and royalty from GASP upper middle bourgeois classes who wanted to take control of the gov’t. Meritocracy anyone? Try Plutocracy; Oligarchy, and Facism. This is what capitalism breeds.

          >>actually capitalism is an economic ideology that has time and time again shown itself opposed to humanist/leftist political philosophies… <<

Yeah, as opposed to the inherently totaliatrian socialist/communist philosophies you would deliberately conflate with "humanism", which has revealed itself again and again over the past 150 years as nothing more than a pyramid scheme designed to place a small group of elites at the top of an all-powerful centralized government which perpetuates it's existence under false claims of humanism and aiding the impoverished. Meanwhile the system has nothing to show for itself but gulags, mass genocide and the single most oppressive and murderous poltical structure of the past century.

Keep drinking the Red Kool Aid, Comrade.

          • Hadrian999

all systems of government operate on concentrate power into the hands of an elite, socialism and capitalism just use a different story to justify their power. instead of gulags capitalism gives you the prison for profit industry, instead of a politburo the elite in capitalist governments use lobbyists to buy politicians.
in the end under both systems a ruling elite control the source of all goods and services to control the lives the people weather its the party or the corporation it doesn’t change the fact that nearly all resources are controlled by a few that are out of reach of justice or the will of the people.

        • Kali23Yuga

I am far from a supporter of the capitalist frenzy, but you can not say capitalism is anti-humanism because human rights are themselves a bourgeois manifesto.
Just read the “Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen”, article 4 and 17. Private property is an inviolable and sacred right, that’s not something I would see many socialists agree upon.
I know a lot of leftists out there want to play the “human rights” card because the proclaimers of it contradict themselves in the field. But do not all doctrines contradict themselves in the end? And more importantly, leftists themselves are being rather opportunistic when eclectically using a bourgeois creed for their cause.

I figured that first post was sarcastic enough. not to slip by anyone’s radar.. Apparently not.

The person they’re putting to shame is Republican Sen. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma, who has been single-handedly holding up the release of aid funds to Haiti, even as Cholera has taken an additional 4,000 lives there.

The man’s supposedly a doctor, but as far as I’m concerned, that’s a violation of the Hippocratic Oath, and the American Medical Association ought to revoke his medical license for that shit.

More troubling is that most of the US’s media, large and small outlets alike, have nothing to say about this. And this is the supposedly “liberal socialist media elite” that quash debate and don’t speak the capitalist truth? Yet total silence reigns…which is hard lesson in the truth: there is no ‘big liberal media’. There is almost no liberal media to speak of. “Liberal Controversy” these days is an argument over whether a reality stars implant breasts are relevant to her role and whether its unfair and anti-woman to take a person less seriously because of plastic surgery. The really dangerous questions are left for the tiny fringe to scream out from the edges. To get information like this you have to pick thru out of country sources, small online venues and lone gun activists who did the legwork but can’t get the press or the credit. That’s the ‘liberal elite’…a bunch of ordinary people hunting for tiny scraps of information that hasn’t been edited or spun out of existence.

Yeah, because the flagrant straw-grasping ass-kissing of a totalitarian communist dictatorship is REALLY indicative of information that’s free of spin.

Well I guess if Fox said ‘there’s no where better than here’ then it must be true…ergo, there’s no reason to strive for better…we should just accept what we have as being the best in the world…on faith…whether its working well or not ;-) The laziest ideology in the world is the one that praises failure because its easier than the hard work of improvement…and we call that ideologies home ‘the GOP’.

You know… Nothing surprises me any more. America is ran by the swine. The people who work hard to pay the swine in tax dollars are being swindled. You want proof America is becoming a third world country? Just go to Gary, IN or Flynt or Detroit. Crumbled buildings, boarded windows, kids starving. Crime. The swine are just going to bail on us. When they see it crumble, they know when to abandoned ship and their going to rob America blind. Leaving us with nothing. I say, Take the power back.

Yeah right! So the Cuban doctors and nurses are the real heros of the Haiti’s earthquake? Give me a break!
Meanwhile the Cuban people themselves don’t get the healthcare that the haitians are getting. If you are a cuban national and have to be admitted in a hospital , you have to bring in your own mattress, bedsheet, pillows, etc. Not to mention the surgical stuff such as neeedles, threads, etc. The majority of cuban hospitals and clinics are in deplorable conditions. I had a friend who died from acquiring a bacteria while getting a UV when he was being attended for a breathing complications in a cuban hospital. My cousin’s daughter was taken to a cuban doctor because of an earache, and he told my cousin to apply a few drops of urine in her daughter’s little ears.

Castro has always been a great propagandist. He always takes political advantage out of human disgrace, and the earthquake that shook Haiti would not be an exception. It is immoral to make this huge deployment of cuban doctors and nurses in Haiti or elsewhere, when the cuban people don’t have the slightest chance of receiving an honorable health service. You just can’t promote elsewhere what you’re not able to provide your own people.
