For the Christmas Season, It Costs $82,000/Month To Light This House

Christmas LightsCasey Chan writes on Gizmodo:

The Faucher Family in Delaware have built extravagant Christmas lights setups for 25 years now. How extravagant? They use 1,000,000 lights. So how much does it cost them to run the lights for a month? $82,320. Gulp.

HouseLogic estimated the total cost by using the average price per kWh in the Faucher Family’s region and assumed each of their 1,000,000 bulbs were the average 5 watt C7 bulb. They then figured the lights to run for 4 hours each night and 30 nights in total. The estimated cost came out to be $686/hour and $82,320 for those bright 30 nights. A lot of money to get in the Christmas spirit!

i was thinking the same damn thing. great Joshs’ think alike.

I wouldn’t do it; however it’s their business. It probably provides a lot of enjoyment for many, many people.

It is indeed there perogitive but when you spend that much money on flash when the world economy’s are struggling your letting most people know your a douche-bag. I am sure it gives some people joy to see it but giving 82,000 in gifts to people in need brings more people joy. I look at that house and say “Look at that arrogant, flashy mother fucker.”

      • WordSmith

I know, Josh. However, the struggling of the world’s economies aren’t being decided by small children who delight in this. YOU think this family are douche bags. You look at that house and ‘say’ what you say because you know what it costs to run it. I’m willing to bet most people don’t know the cost of running those lights.

It would be interesting to see what $686/day could do for a soup kitchen. All kinds of alternatives.

        • The_josh_21

What it all comes down to to me is the deep down acknowledgement that human beings have the choice and the means to be great, loving, selfless beings and they continue to indulge in greed and vanity in epic proportions even when they know this.

          • WordSmith

            Well said, Josh….well said, indeed.

        • Jlansky7

Those small children wouldnt know the difference if there was a giant light extravaganza or just one huge blow up santa in the front yard. they dont give a shit as long they get what they want for christmas, thats thats the holiday cheer unfortunately. $81,320?? ARE YOU SERIOUS?? the holiday spirit is about giving, and i doubt they make that much contribution to those in need, holiday season or not. kids and people are dying, starving, being killed for food and all this big money tycoon wants is a million christmas lights. but hey he earned it right?

wtf? i have never read disinfo.com before. is the entire thing satire? i heard about this false story getting around. obviously the figure is much too high. are these comments satire? its hard to believe anyone could actually be as stupid as josh 1 and wordsmith

    • WordSmith

How is it false story when it’s reported in the local media and elsewhere (HGTV, etc.)? There may be quibbling about “the numbers” as far as the cost of running the display. However that doesn’t devalue the conversation here. You – you have added nothing.

      • macthespoon

there’s a very well known method in journalism called fact checking. its closely related to not believing everything you hear and ties into not propagating lies.

unlike you my head isn’t wedged up my butt and i was able to find this after searching ‘faucher family delaware’ on account of it being the first hit. apparently i wasn’t the only one who realized that this story is bogus. seriously, $82,000 for a xmas electricity bill doesn’t cause you to raise your eyebrows at all?

wordsmith, your conversation has just been mutual butt kissing that’s main purpose is to reinforce some psuedo superiority. i never desired to add to it at all.

        • Anon

Ok… so instead of this becoming a flame war, you could have easily let everyone know that a better estimate had cut the power bill nearly in half. I felt the same thing when I saw that price tag and knew that there was no way they used the same size bulb a million times over.

No need to get all edgy here. Disinfo is a good place to check out interesting stories that are circulating the web, though not all are exactly gems. But there’s a good mix of info (and disinfo) that there seems to be something for everyone.

        • WordSmith

Dude – you have some major problems. Sure, googling ‘faucher family delaware’ brings up all kinds of shit. Did you check the News listings rather than the Web? I used other wording and found 2 local news stations who had reported on this with some news outlets reporting the lighting with quibbling about the cost. My sources were news outlets not curbed.com – who gets their information from other sources other than first hand knowledge.

Who the fuck is propagating lies? Do you know what the word ‘propagating’ even means? Since this is the only place I’ve discussed it – I’m not propagating shit.’

Your head is wedged up your ass which is why you respond the way you do. And for the record you have a definite propensity to use phrases and word incorrectly. Asshole.

        • The_josh_21

I can sit here and respond all day. honestly though its a waste of time to keep responding to people that cant think outside the box and see things objectively. Think past the lights and money. Think of what truly is the problem. The problem is delusional people doing next to the nothing for anything as a greater whole. motivated to do things to get self satisfaction and praise, Anyone that opens there mind to the universe can easy see how ridiculous that light show is. making excuses and being ignorant is no excuse and doesn’t make a person innocent. Those light send the wrong message and are a bad example of what charity and good will are to children and continues the process generation after generation.

p.s. this is my last post on this. If you don’t get what Wordsmith and i are truly saying by now then you wont for a long time or ever. look past yourselves and at the greater scheme of things.i hope someday you do.

If you didn’t have the consciousness of hermit crab you would see that our conversation has to do with more than just a family with too many lights. It’s mainly how a majority of human beings think they contribute something to society when in fact they don’t. It was about a person saying ‘hey look at me” with flash and flare when they could have done something relevant in society. Instead they wasted resources in such a large proportion. you need to see the forest through the trees Macthspoon before you call someone stupid because that comment in fact made YOU look like a stupid dick.

      • macthespoon

at least i have the consciousness to recognize an absurd lie when i hear one.

they did contribute something to society. they obviously put a lot of energy and their own money into creating a festive display that anyone can enjoy for free.

this is a private home not enron or bernie madoff. i don’t believe anyone is in the position to question the spending of private citizens. its their money. being charitable is admired when people do it; its not impressive when you rant that other people should do it.

i only discovered disinfo yesterday and thought it might be a spoof site like the onion. i actually thought that you’re comments could be satire because you were so aloof and ridiculous. if that doesn’t tell you who looks like a stupid dick, i don’t know what will…

Wow – So many folks full of ill will here. First of all those estimates are off. Yes, it costs a ton of cash, but has anyone thought that maybe the cost is picked up by the electric company, a not for profit agency, family & friends donations, or all of the above? I really don’t think it has anything to do with ego or vanity, but instead a genuine desire of bring cheer to all those who have lost touch with the special feeling that only Christmas brings – other than just the feeling of receiving the specific bit of store merchandise you so wished for, to make all of us feel young again in a way a pair of socks cannot. People where is your cheer – yes it is unfortunate that we must pay for our electricity, evil monopoly that it is, but imagine for a moment that the cost was not a factor in this. All the hours of hard work involved to make this thing happen. So many naysayers! Imagine a world where no one ever did this sort of thing again – because of people like you talking crap about it – what sort of world are people like you pushing us toward. Christ – mass has become a perverted, deformed, unrecognizable remnant of what it once was, especially here in the west. Forget your selfish opinions for a second, and imagine yourself a child standing in front of those lights. Jesus himself, the reason Christmas exists at all, said ‘If you want to enter the Kingdom Of Heaven, you must become like a child’. Guess what? Children do not think about soup kitchens, folks, or electrical costs – Or a whole bunch of other things – I’ll let you guys try to imagine what. they are innocent, open, and accepting. Try it yourself for a change.

    Garbage in = Garbage out

You calculation is bogus. The majority of those lights are not going to be 5w C7 lamps. Your off close to facto a factor of 10! It probably is closer to $10,000 for the time period you suggested. If the basis of your story is how much it costs to run the lights a little more research is expected.
