    I’m somewhat disturbed that the Sheriff’s Office was willing, or more importantly able, to make them tear it down, however. Freedom of speech does have a couple of very specific caveats… but speech made on private property absolutely should not be subject to police intervention… no matter how ignorant, offensive, morally reprehensible, or outright stupid it may be (in this case, it’s all of the above).

      Yeah freedom of speech is vital. How are you going to know what someone is all about if they don’t disperse their agenda when drunk with freedom and confidence. But the clans men are just cheesy, same old story and we all know that in breeding causes lower IQ and disease. MIXED POWER!!!!!!!!!!!

        There’s a bumper sticker that says “If we outlaw freedom of speech, how will we know who the assholes are?”. I guess that about sums it up. However, in the past homeowners have been ordered by law to remove unsightly objects and garbage from the yard… Could apply here.

Like a kid caught with his hand in the cookie jar, he just flat out lied, and the reporter’s just like “We have pictures..” but he stuck to his lie. “Well I never saw it.” (Meanwhile his fingers crossed inside his jacket pocket and he’s thinking “Because I closed my eyes while I was hanging it up.”)

      In the 80′s in Michigan, skinheads and neo-nazi’s used to pop up in the punk subcultures (notably in Holland MI…where Erik Prince of Xe fame was raised). I made a sport of deliberately ‘skin-bashing’ for kicks when I was in high school and just after. I liked the irony of a closeted queer (moi) beating the shit out of racist, homophobic wannabe fag-bashers. Needless to say…there were very few shaved heads in my neighborhood after a couple years of it being unsafe to be seen in public. I can only assume they grew their hair so they could be safe to travel again or moved away.

          Can’t really apply any dialectic to it…I was 17-19, closeted, tough as nails, mean as a snake, and I hated the idea of losers beating up or intimidating other people less capable of fighting back. Not really a competition…they just stepped up and lost. If any lesson could be learned…the people who initiated conflict and desired a chance to feel good about themselves at the expense of others (of course…only under circumstances where they felt safe enough to strike out…never when they were at a disadvantage)…took an ass beating for their efforts and learned to leave well enough alone.

          I’m all for educated civil discourse now…but its been twenty + years and I’ve had time to mellow out and consider the virtue of patience and kindness. But back then…making somebody experience the thrill of shitting their own teeth out when they stroll around looking for people to scare seemed like a great comeback.

            I have known a lot of kids like that. I am never sad when they get the hell knocked out of them. Talking is better, of course, but pretty unlikely in teen years. Or small towns. I wonder if getting beat up by a queer was harder to take. Or if, somewhere in their repressed souls, they were gratified at being held–even if it was in a headlock…

    Not shocking at all…Idaho…and to my lasting shame, Northern Michigan…only hours from where I live, are both hotbeds of white power militia activism. These people are quite real, and even if they are slightly stupider and less insightful than the average Palin-fan, they belong to organizations and occasionally make their support available for politicians that discretely agree with them. Then theres the fact that they advocate direct action in the form of domestic terrorism against anyone who stands between them and their goals…as well as anyone who moves against them. It’s easy to not take them seriously when they’re this comically ignorant…but never forget that you’re dealing with creatures that are more dangerous than a starving leopard with rabies.
