David Brock on Hardball: “Glenn Beck Himself Has Been Responsible For Three Thwarted Assassination Attempts This Year.”

In a segment on Sarah Palin’s continuing profitable martyrdom, Media Matters’ David Brock told Chris Matthews that Glenn Beck has inspired assassination attempts.  Here’s the clip:

And here’s the transcript of the exchange:

MATTHEWS: I think we used to say, maybe back in the Churchillian age, your voice was your power, your ability to speak up. That’s certainly Norman Rockwell’s notion, the man, you know — the standing up at a meeting, at a public meeting and saying, “Here’s what I believe.” But, now, it’s standing up with your arms, standing up with your ammo, your gun sites, your bull’s eye.

Why do you have — this is a problem I have with the tea party. Why so many guns at these events? Why constantly referring to guns? What is it? Is it a throwback to the revolutionary age? They think they’re in an armed revolution?

BROCK: Right. What does the tea party moniker stand for? Armed rebellion, right? This has been a theme of the Republican candidates and of Sarah Palin all year.

MATTHEWS: Excuse me. History lesson: The Boston tea party was a nonviolent economic statement against the Stamp Act, I believe. They threw the tea in the water. No guns.

BROCK: That’s right.

MATTHEWS: They dressed up like Indians. It was a demonstration. It was street theater, OK? No guns.

BROCK: But this is not street theater, as you know. I mean, Glenn Beck himself has been responsible for three thwarted assassination attempts this year, and Sarah Palin hasn’t condemned that.

MATTHEWS: How is he responsible for them?

BROCK: Well, you want to know what they are?

MATTHEWS: You said it.

BROCK: Yeah, sure. So, he burned Nancy Pelosi in effigy on his set. He tried to poison her with a chalice, OK? Some weeks later, somebody tried to firebomb Nancy Pelosi’s house. That guy’s mother went on television and said he gets all of his ideas from Fox News. Do you know about Senator Patty Murray and the death threat that she got?

MATTHEWS: No, go ahead.

BROCK: OK. It’s recorded — the guy says after the health care vote. He says you have a target on your back and I can accomplish what I want to accomplish with one bullet. Now he’s tried, convicted, and in the sentencing phase, his cousin writes in for leniency, and she describes in a very chilling memo — it’s on our website — that he was slowly drawn into Glenn Beck’s world. And she portrays the guy, the attempted assassin, Charlie Wilson, as a victim of Beck.

And number three, which you probably do know about, this liberal foundation in San Francisco was targeted by a gunman, Byron Williams, in June. The shooter gave jailhouse interviews, and we published them, and he says Glenn Beck is this schoolteacher on television and points to specific episodes of the Glenn Beck show that inspired him do it.

Glenn Beck is NUTTTZZZ..I’m getting more and more suspicious about these peoples’ agendas. And they understand how to use symbolism and language to manipulate the masses! Sarah Palin has dug herself into one big shithole. She’s also dumb as bricks and probably was not informed about what she was really saying in her speech, which of course somebody wrote for her.

they use the same dodge that white supremacists have for years, the preach hate conflict and violence but claim innocence because they never give specific orders .

Reference Bioshock, would you kindly? Theres something more going on, lets look on a subconcious level, would you kindly? The Human brain easily draws its own conclusions when exposed to certain stimuli, even without the individual knowing, would you kindly?

Regarding Palin, I think what no one is paying attention to is that until like, roughly three minutes before accepting the nomination to the VP post offered by that dimwit John McCain, both Sarah and her husband were members of a secessionist party that sought to separate from “the lower 48″ and become their own country.

So the chick and her husband were traitors before they ever got onto the national stage, and I don’t think they’re really changed from that position. I think they’re just down here stirring up trouble because they think it’s cute to throw the United States (that they don’t want to be a part of) into chaos.

We are seeing the end result of our mechanization of our educational system, where we are more concerned about “facts” and filling in little bubbles than developing the capacity for critical thinking. Where Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin, who pride themselves on their lack of education, are looked up to as “heroes” for the common man. It has become a “bad thing” to be an educated, intelligent person who uses multi-syllabic words and invokes science, reason and (dare I say it) a practical, egalitarian application of religion. We have become a culture where the inmates are running the asylum and only the court jesters (Jon Stewart, Stephen Cobert, et al.) speak any reason.

This country is decaying from the inside out. There is Madness at the Gates of the City.

Here’s what cracks me up about that exchange. I don’t even live in Washington State anymore, but even I knew that Senator Patty Murray got a death threat.

But “professional news reader” Chris “Tweety” Matthews didn’t know about it.

So on one network we’ve got goobers like Glen Beck pulling BS directly out of their backsides to inspire wackjobs to kill people, and on the other network, we’ve got news people less informed than the general public.

Does anyone want to take bets one whether any of these hairdos that call themselves journalists know that last August Tea Party wackjobs caused at least $10,000 worth of damage to the Democratic Headquarters in Denver? Or that Gabrielle Giffords’ offices were trashed by rightwing loons, long before this goober took a shot at her? Or that the Tea Party members left messages on NY Democratic Rep Louise Slaughter’s message machine threatening to KILL THE CHILDREN of anyone who voted to give Americans health care? Not to mention that thanks to Republican budget cuts, in Arizona’s Pima County (Gabrielle Giffords’ home district) 45 percent of those receiving mental health services were dropped in 2010?

Maybe if Chris or any of the others gave people some CONTEXT, it would become evident that this ISN’T an isolated incident of a lone nutbag, but just the latest is a PATTERN of behavior, inspired DAILY by the Wrongwing corporate news media echo chamber.

The incident at the Tides Foundation also points to the fact that the rhetoric on the right (and it’s violent results) are very much a PLANNED thing, not just the random ramblings of a crazy host like Beck.

Outside of the organization itself, like three people even knew what the Tides Foundation even was. Despite this organization being very ordinary, weirdly, a guy went off and tried to attack the charity (but thankfully was stopped by the police in California).

    Why?

Well, it turns out that Glenn Beck devoted 24 segments in the preceding 6 months to talking about the Tides Foundation portraying them as a “communist plot to take over our society and seize control of big business.”

If you look the Tides Foundation up in a search, you’ll find that the only listings about them are their own site, and various general charity listings. Beyond that, the only major media outlet covering them was Glenn Beck, or people talking about what Glenn Beck said about them.

But 6 months after Glenn Beck whipped up the irrational fear about this charity, there’s a guy all armored up and loaded for bear, going off to shoot up their offices. And the shooter refers to himself as a “progressive hunter” — a term coined by Glenn Beck. It therefore becomes a bit difficult to maintain that Beck’s words had no role in this, since he was the only one in the media spewing about it.

But what I wanted to find out was, why is Glenn Beck mentioning this charity in the first place?

Well, turns out, he got his marching orders from the rightwing echo machine, and he was merely following them like a good goose-stepping German.

Seems that the Tides Foundation backs successful social justice and environmental organizations like the Rainforest Action Network, or the Thoreau Center for Sustainability — so it has been targeted by the Orwellian-named “Center for Consumer Freedom” an astroturf conservative front group for the tobacco, alcohol, and restaurant industries, and the conservative Capital Research Center (created by Heritage Foundation Senior VP Willa Johnson).

So basically, this entire kerfuffle is just Conservative “think” tanks (who hide their funding sources, unlike the Tides Foundation which does public reporting of their donor lists) attacking a social justice charity they disagree with politically, but doing it in a backhanded (underhanded) way.

To give you an idea of just how radically far right (I would argue fascist) the CRC is, understand that they characterized the RAND Corporation — the RAND Corporation — as “center left.” The same totally non-liberal RAND Corporation that hid the Pentagon Papers from the public on behalf of the Defense establishment in the 1960′s! They’re supposedly “center-left” according to the John Birchers/Tea Partiers at the CRC.

They also called the American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society “liberal”. Yup, you heard it — heart disease and cancer — liberal plots. That couldn’t possibly be because its now been found out that the CRC gets much of its funding from Philip Morris Tobacco….. FYI, the CRC was also used by Dick Armey to contact 82 companies “warning” them about impending health care legislation.

So that’s how these things develop.

The rightwing corporate elites get confronted by something Liberal that successfully calls them on their bullshit, or dares to change things for the better, thus threatening their sacred profits.

So rather than attacking that directly, or — God forbid — competing in the marketplace (not to mention the marketplace of ideas) with a better business model, they get their mouthpieces in the rightwing media to jack up the irrational fear to such a fever pitch, that it motivates some wingnut physically goes out and attacks whatever the rightwing wants to get rid of.

This way, those who really wanted to do the destroying, are then three degrees of separation away from the violence they themselves helped to create.
