NYC’s Ilicit Four Loko Underground

4118584_f260Since the FDA outlawed the sickly-sweet, caffeinated, vomit-inducing alcoholic drink Four Loko, a brisk black market has sprung up on the internet. Twelve-packs readily available, at inflated prices that will only rise, NBC New York reports:

It may be banned from store shelves but Four Loko is one of the hottest products on Craigslist.

A 4NewYork hidden-camera investigation exposed just how easy it is to buy the alcoholic energy drink from private dealers who stocked up before the FDA forced Four Loko manufacturers to eliminate caffeine from their recipe.

After responding to posting from an Upper East Side Four Loko dealer, WNBC was able to purchase a case of twelve cans for $80, a mark-up of more than 300 percent. Since November, dozens of sellers have posted craigslist ads charging anywhere from $4 to $8 per can. When the drink was legal, buyers paid only $2 to $3 per can.

The controversial drink, nicknamed “Alcopop” or “Blackout in a Can” was first banned from the New Jersey campus of Ramapo College when 17 students were hospitalized after drinking the potent formula.

“It’s a very expensive black market item that people are price gouging and making a lot of money on and they’re making a lot of money on people’s health.”

So what have we learned about the wages of alcohol prohibition, ladies and gents? From this story, I conclude that we have learned abso-fucking-lutely nothing.

no one is making you ride with a seatbelt, you wanna drink your shitty 4loko while speeding down the road without a seatbelt. go right ahead, slam into a pole and fly through the window, lets stand UNITED and watch the idiots kill themselves. I agree, some laws shouldn’t be forced on us. It should be our choice if we want to ignore the warnings and proceed to jump off the cliff into water when we can’t swim. It’s a free country right?

Four Loko, MD20/20, or just doings shots of shitty vodka, chugging beers, or slamming wine all can get you to the same place – you drink a lot, fast, and then are suddenly completely shitty because you consume so much booze in a short period of time.

I drank more than my fair share of Four Loko, usually at BYOB punk shows. I certainly wouldn’t go out of my way to get it, but it always seemed like an ok option when shopping at a shady corner store and pointing at stuff behind bullet proof glass…

That is an interesting point of view. I wonder if the TABC would crack down on bars mixing hard liquor into energy drinks?

If your really that desperate for caffeinated booze, do it with taste and style, make yourself an Irish Coffee http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_coffee and forget the crap caffeinated alcopops (banned because they are targeted at under age binge drinking).
Blame anyone, then blame sociopath marketing executives who have no qualms about targeting children to inflate profits regardless of how many they kill.
