Republicans Push For Tracking Of All Of Your Internet Activity

e4233ab3-7ea4-4159-82ea-40632981d47aIs this what those tea party Republicans mean by “restoring freedom” and “less government”? CNET reports:

The House Republicans’ first major technology initiative is about to be unveiled: a push to force Internet companies to keep track of what their users are doing.

A House panel chaired by Rep. F. James Sensenbrenner of Wisconsin is scheduled to hold a hearing tomorrow morning to discuss forcing Internet providers, and perhaps Web companies as well, to store records of their users’ activities for later review by police.
One focus will be on reviving a dormant proposal for data retention that would require companies to store Internet Protocol (IP) addresses for two years, CNET has learned.

Tomorrow’s data retention hearing is juxtaposed against the recent trend to protect Internet users’ privacy by storing less data. Last month, the Federal Trade Commission called for “limited retention” of user data on privacy grounds, and in the last 24 hours, both Mozilla and Google have announced do-not-track technology.

A Judiciary committee aide provided a statement this afternoon saying “the purpose of this hearing is to examine the need for retention of certain data by Internet service providers to facilitate law enforcement investigations of Internet child pornography and other Internet crimes,” but declined to elaborate.

Setting aside the enormous privacy and legal issues for just a minute… can you imagine how much server space logging that amount of tracking info is going to take up? This would be a logistical nightmare.

Data overload, indeed. Either that, or you would have so little data (eg, Host only) that it would be useless.

i’m guessing it’d be on the side of excess, rather than not, if they were going to do it.

        *spoof* and i’m gone (:

Yeah, in order to comply you’d end up having to maintain too much rather than too little. With something approaching 2 billion people routinely on the internet every day… Logs just for my little forum site can get crazy large if I don’t purge them regularly (I track for spam-fighting purposes), and I only have 50 users… Color me glad I’m not a system engineer…

I like this idea. Could really bring the nation together.

When Sensenbrenner (another Wisconsin homie!) sees that 50 year-old men on BOTH the Left and the Right patronize sites like “Kink-4-U.com” and “Trannytown.com”, he’ll understand that we all have more in common than he ever imagined while pretending to be a 14 year-old girl trolling internet chat rooms.

Just kidding. It’s a well known-fact that Lefties are much more open with their non-conformity than the religiously repressed right wing. Dems have relatively dull grown-up adultery scandals while Republicans are the true artistes–former senator Ryan of IL being a member of a DC-area bondage club, Florida’s Marc Foley attempting to force himself on under-aged page boys, George Rekers caught ‘handling the package’ of a rent boy, etc., etc.

This thing is far more dangerous to the Right than to the Left any day of the week.

ugh. Sensenbrenner was my rep when I lived in Wisconsin. Like any good activist, I’d send letters or call and leave messages about issues that were important to me, and the form letters I’d get back from him were astounding in their ignorance of how those new-fangled electronic gadgets (you know, personal computers and the interwebs) work. The idea of him chairing a committee on anything technology related is chilling. IP addresses don’t even tell you anything useful! If it’s an AOL ip (or other companies but AOL changes most often), it changes every six hours even, so whatever you record isn’t going to be accurate within a few hours! And that’s assuming it’s not spoofed in the first place, which any one trying to commit a crime online likely knows how to do and is already doing…

    This isn’t happening already?

No, this is not what Tea Partiers have in mind, and you KNOW it. Please stop it with the stupid straw men. Thank you.

There are actual right-wing and left-wing, and then there are our lousy politicians and their lousy political parties, both Republicans and Democrats. We are heading to hell in a hand basket at an increasingly, alarmingly fast rate, and pointing fingers at CITIZENS who try to legitimately argue points of left vs. right philosophy just wastes time as the lousy politicians move us all ever closer to the point of totalitarian statehood.

It doesn’t matter what the Tea Partiers have in mind. What matters is what their masters want. The party will follow gladly.

      • Bobisgodogisbob

where did you get that silly info? The Tea Party movement has nothing to do with a “political” party. It’s CITIZENS banding together to protest the moronic actions of our much-less-than democratic republic. it’s about restoring OUR NATION to what is used to be, and was meant to be, when created by the founding fathers. the name come’s in memory of the BOSTON TEA PARTY. Hence the yellow flag with the rattler and “Don’t Tread on Me”.

Dick Cheney, on being asked to respond to this, had to finish devouring his baby with kitten chips on the side meal. He did not give an answer, as his desert had arrived, a live baby seal, which he devoured with its death shrieks giving him a visible erection.
