The Carnage Following Egyptian Protests (Video)

The best reporting from Cairo so far has been from the Qatar-based satellite TV network Al Jazeera. Here’s the latest report on the developing situation in Egypt from Al Jazeera’s Dan Nolan, who says Egyptian military tanks have rolled into cities including Cairo, in President Hosni Mubarak’s attempt to restore order. Mubarak’s speech on Saturday did not appease his people and protests continue for a fifth day, with demonstrators still calling for an end to his 30-year reign.

Is this because the Egyptian government took away the internet? If so, that was a real dumb move on their part.

      Maybe.

But let’s also consider the possibility that Egypt’s elites see this as an existential threat to them. Maybe it’s not that the elite would not merely be unhappy with less wealth and power inequalities. Maybe they can’t even IMAGINE an existence with out it. Maybe they really think that they would literally DIE if they had to live on $1 Billion instead of $40 Billion, like Mubarak himself does now.

I sometimes wonder if studies would demonstrate a statistically significant correlation between wealth and lack of imagination. Maybe the key to ending all these standoffs, in Egypt as well as the U.S., wouldn’t be to dump vast doses of LSD into the drinking water of the gated communities where these elites live. Maybe that’d be the psychic catalyst that would shift their consciousness in the required direction.

      Just thoughts.
