The Organic Elite Surrenders to Monsanto

543px-Whole_Foods_Market_logoFrom the Organic Consumers Association:

In the wake of a 12-year battle to keep Monsanto’s Genetically Engineered (GE) crops from contaminating the nation’s 25,000 organic farms and ranches, America’s organic consumers and producers are facing betrayal. A self-appointed cabal of the Organic Elite, spearheaded by Whole Foods Market, Organic Valley, and Stonyfield Farm, has decided it’s time to surrender to Monsanto. Top executives from these companies have publicly admitted that they no longer oppose the mass commercialization of GE crops, such as Monsanto’s controversial Roundup Ready alfalfa, and are prepared to sit down and cut a deal for “coexistence” with Monsanto and USDA biotech cheerleader Tom Vilsack.

In a cleverly worded, but profoundly misleading email sent to its customers last week, Whole Foods Market, while proclaiming their support for organics and “seed purity,” gave the green light to USDA bureaucrats to approve the “conditional deregulation” of Monsanto’s genetically engineered, herbicide-resistant alfalfa.  Beyond the regulatory euphemism of “conditional deregulation,” this means that WFM and their colleagues are willing to go along with the massive planting of a chemical and energy-intensive GE perennial crop, alfalfa; guaranteed to spread its mutant genes and seeds across the nation; guaranteed to contaminate the alfalfa fed to organic animals; guaranteed to lead to massive poisoning of farm workers and destruction of the essential soil food web by the toxic herbicide, Roundup; and guaranteed to produce Roundup-resistant superweeds that will require even more deadly herbicides such as 2,4 D to be sprayed on millions of acres of alfalfa across the U.S.

In exchange for allowing Monsanto’s premeditated pollution of the alfalfa gene pool, WFM wants “compensation.” In exchange for a new assault on farmworkers and rural communities (a recent large-scale Swedish study found that spraying Roundup doubles farm workers’ and rural residents’ risk of getting cancer), WFM expects the pro-biotech USDA to begin to regulate rather than cheerlead for Monsanto. In payment for a new broad spectrum attack on the soil’s crucial ability to provide nutrition for food crops and to sequester dangerous greenhouse gases (recent studies show that Roundup devastates essential soil microorganisms that provide plant nutrition and sequester climate-destabilizing greenhouse gases), WFM wants the Biotech Bully of St. Louis to agree to pay “compensation” (i.e. hush money) to farmers “for any losses related to the contamination of his crop.”…

That’s it! Wholefoods, you’re not getting my $10 for my always important alfalfa purchase. So there.

Let’s give the right real fodder for their false equivalencies of left wing violence vs. right wing violence. Firebomb Monsanto headquarters. I wouldn’t advocate violence normally but really, what value does Monsanto provide to the marketplace and society at large? GMO seed, poisons and an agenda that seems to want to corner the market on world food production. Is this bullsh-t necessary?

Maybe conspiracies are not so whakcy! I would suggest everyone who comes across this to check out “Nutricide – Criminalizing Natural Health, Vitamins, and Herbs” about The Codex Alimentarius Commission http://bit.ly/p8Mdl

Here is a I TOLD YOU SO. The U.S. will enforce the Codex regulations on its people. It’s no secret that BIG PHARM. wants to eleminate or control vitamins and herbs. BIG PHARM will push the U.S. gov’t to standardize vitamins and herbs. Some people will tell you, “well this is a good thing.” If you buy from a reputable company, the label is correct. The U.S. gov’t will enforce a % of daily value, and make vitamins and herbs so weak, that it will be cost prohibitive to purchase. You will have to go to a doctor to get high milligram meltonin, dhea, and other vitamins and herbs.

Well…its over…there will be no untainted food on Earth in two or three generations…or certainly not enough to sustain a market for uncorrupted untampered food.

I don’t even believe in the end of the world scenarios…I’m just a foodie who savors a food for being exactly what it was intended to be…with no alterations at the genetic level. I don’t want a carrot that mysteriously resists pesticide and scares beetles away…I want a f&cking carrot that is perfect by virtue of its imperfections. We’ve already tampered with so many foods in so many ways that the flavors are diminished without the addition of MSG to stimulate a response that echoes enjoyment. I’m sure it will all still be digestible…probably…and it will keep people alive…probably…but in a short while it better do both of the above very well…because there won’t be the option of going back afterwards.

What? No one can plant and grow on their own? Paraplegic? Quadriplegic? With all that we know now about agriculture? Time to make your own organic seedbanks and genetics, just like the elite. Not going to say I told you so but…..

somebody? somebody else? 30 countries to find genetics mr pessimist, genetics you can grow and make your own, but oh well, give up, thats what alot of you are good at…and one last time, told you so

We only have ourselves to blame. We didn’t really fight that hard. Most of us didn’t really care. Complacency has been our curse for quite some time now. Outrage on a comment board does not equal outrage in the streets.

Truely I understand your anger, but there is a home for each process. Your concern about the evil of 2-4D on alfalfa is absurd, it would kill it, Have you ever seen a “natural” tomato? It does not resemble through hybridization what the origional tomato (or carrot or whatever) looks like, it was manipulated to be what it is. That being said there should be caution about the growth of the biotech industry but stop with the doom and gloom at the whole world. How do you think you will feed 9 billion people in 20 years? We don’t make more land, It will be a necessary “evil”-sorry. Unless you feel famine in another country is OK as long as you have your “organic” products. Why do they cost more anyway with less inputs?

“How do you think you will feed 9 billion people in 20 years?” We need mandatory population control and we needed it several decades ago…we can prevent the numbers from ever getting that high. Because if we don’t do it for ourselves, Mother Nature will surely figure out a way to thin out the herd…

They are not sell outs, they are corporate organic foods. For them organic is nothing more than PR0=B$ marketing, a means by which to inflate profits for the products they sell.
Psychopaths taking the normal role in capitalist society, that of ruthlessly exploiting the majority regardless of the consequences.
They did not sell out organic foods, the very second they got in the business they sought to corrupt it fin order to maximise profits.

On January 27, the Obama Administration made the damaging decision to approve the unrestricted cultivation of genetically engineered (GE) alfalfa. This means GE alfalfa can be planted without any federal requirements to prevent contamination of organic and non-GE crops. It also means that GE alfalfa does not have to be labeled, making it difficult for consumers to identify and avoid. This decision, to support big business at the expense of individual choice, sets a precedent that could lead to the deregulation of other GE crops, in spite of the fact that genetic engineering has not been conclusively proven safe. Don’t stand by while well-funded and well-connected biotechnology interests are given the power to eliminate marketplace choice. Demand that President Obama protect your right to choose products free of genetic engineering! http://ota.capwiz.com/ota/issues/alert/?alertid=24747501
