This may come as a shock to people too young to remember a world before the Internet, but by 1994 standards they were actually doing pretty well. In fact, the issue that brought it up in the first place was actually less silly than it seems: they were driving at the fundamental difference between “The Internet”, a URL and an e-mail address, and raising technical questions about routing and protocols. The questions may have been a touch inelegant, and their baseline understanding was clearly rudimentary at best, but for people who really had no understanding of a new technology with a great deal of new and non-obvious terminology, it seems a bit harsh and childish to hold any of this against them.

Had that exchange taken place in 2004, of course, it would have been ridiculous.
