French Man Claims Parkinson’s Pills Turned Him Into ‘Gay Sex Fiend’

RequipReports the AFP via Google News:

NANTES, France — A French father-of-two is to take GlaxoSmithKline to court on Tuesday, alleging the British firm’s drug to treat Parkinson’s disease turned him into a gay sex and gambling addict.

The 51-year-old’s lawyers say their client’s behaviour changed radically after he was first administered the drug in 2003 for the illness, which causes tremors, slows movement and disrupts speech.

Didier Jambart, a married father-of-two who says he has attempted suicide three times, claims he became addicted to Internet gambling, losing the family’s savings and stealing to feed his habit. He also became a compulsive gay sex addict and began exposing himself on the Internet and cross-dressing. His risky sexual encounters led to him being raped, his lawyers said.

The behaviour stopped when he stopped taking the drugs in 2005 but by then he had been demoted in his defence ministry job and was suffering from psychological trauma resulting from his addictions, his lawyers said.

Ever listen to the Radiolab episode where a woman with Parkinson’s started on some medication and turned into a gambling addict? As soon as she got off the meds, the impulse to gamble disappeared.

I have family who work for Big Pharma directly overseeing clinical trials, so I’ll take a stab at answering your question:

Hard work and plenty of luck.

The studies that show these kind of results are likely to never see the light of day.

It’s about to get a whole lot worse too, because soon these kinds of studies will be able to be completely outsourced to China.

I’ve done plenty of drug trials for Big Pharma. I can’t really see people who participate in trials looking investigators in the face telling them these sorts of sordid details. There is an “other” section of side effects but if only a handful of people are honest to say they turned gay or became compulsive gamblers then that is not really scientifically the drugs fault. Think of all human behaviors and what can be included in a study, if I fancied peanut butter more often does that mean something? Really people if you take a drug and it makes you act wackier than you were before that is when you have a chat with your doctor…. duh and this guy worked for the Ministry of Defense! EEEK

Rarer and more unusual side effects specific to D3-preferring agonists such as ropinirole and pramipexole can include hypersexuality and compulsive gambling, even in patients without a prior history of these behaviours.

I don’t buy it. Any reasonable person would know that these new impulses were out of line with their true selves. They would put two and two together and stop taking the meds. Unless there was an underlying urge to engage in this type of behavior beforehand.

Exactly. He had some underlying desire to do this, and the drugs possibly removed his inhibitions to do so (like alcohol). But he didn’t feel any reason to stop, he was enjoying himself way too much.

Pharmacology says that anything that causes the relase of dopamine like requip and miraplex and those RLS/Parkisons pills can cause hyper sexuality. That altered sexuality already had to be there for him to act on it. So this man was a closted crossdressing gay sex fiend and only when he took those pills was he so free sexually that he could do this. – Pharma-Junkie

My favorite part of this story is how this guy was OK with gambling away his family’s money, attempting suicide three times, stealing, and living a double-life, but the last straw was when “No” didn’t mean “No.” That’s some irony.
