Major Energy Interests Linked To Attacks On ‘Gasland’ Film

I had a chance to attend a screening of Gasland last year. It is an eye-opening film which exposes the severe dangers fracking presents to the environment and the public. Naturally, any controversial documentary is bound to make a few enemies. MNN reports:

Josh Fox, the director of the Academy Award nominated documentary Gasland isn’t surprised at the recent reports that oil and natural gas front groups are behind campaigns aimed at discrediting him and his film.

On Thursday, Brendan DeMelle reported on Desmogblog.com and the Huffington Post that a memo had surfaced linking the group Energy in Depth with oil and natural gas interests. In recent months Energy in Depth has been at the center of criticism aimed at not only Gasland, but also reporters at ProPublica and the Associated Press following stories that reflected negatively on the hydraulic fracturing industry. Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking as it has become known, is a process where chemicals are injected deep into the ground at a high pressure to get to natural gas reserves.

I think this is the one where the actor Mark Ruffalo, got put on a terrorist watch list just because he helped the producer’s out by organizing a bunch of screenings of the movie, because he was concerned about the practice of fracking.

Yes…he was traveling the country when he found out he’d been added to the list…despite having no connection to terror of any kind…which can only lead one to assume that activism has been treated as a form of terrorism once again. Pretty nerve wracking, eh?

Actually, it really pisses me off, because when all that Patriot Act BS was being rammed through Congress, the goobers who supported it gave all these assurances that supposedly this would ONLY be used to fight terrorism. But the fact is, there’s been all sorts of bleeding into other areas, with it being used from everything from drug interdiction, to silencing frickin’ librarians.

Now apparently its being used by corporate interests to harass anyone who they regard as a threat to their business interests.

“Judicial drift” doesn’t BEGIN to describe this abuse of the law.

I’m curious what role Infragard might play in this sort of thing, since basically it deputizes corporate interests to “report” on “suspicious” citizens like the American version of the Stazi.

They are trying to start fracking in Payette Idaho, the citizens have protested and the State government refuses to listen to them at all, this could potentially poison the Snake River.
