Study Claims Ogling Women Makes Them Worse at Math

Simpsons CuriesI wonder what the first person to win two Nobel prizes, Madame Curie, would make of this study. Oh, I know the answer from a classic Simpsons episode … Stephanie Pappas writes on LiveScience:

Getting the once-over from a man causes women to score lower on a math test, a new study finds.

Despite this drop in performance, women were more motivated to interact with men who ogled them, perhaps because they were trying to boost their sense of belonging, psychologists report in the February issue of the journal Psychology of Women Quarterly.

“It creates this vicious cycle for women in which they’re underperforming in math or work domains, but they’re continuing to want to interact with the person who is making them underperform in the first place,” study researcher Sarah Gervais, a psychologist at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, told LiveScience.

Interesting theory, but trust me, the test scores (not to mention IQs) of the men doing the ogling probably drop by just as much… Having sex on the brain, in general, makes you stupid. I guess the drive to procreate wins out over the drive to do math… And also explains why the smartest and most knowledgeable tend to be those who cloister themselves either by lack of social opportunities or choice. When you don’t have to worry about attempting to procreate all the time, you can devote your mind to more intellectual pursuits…

Aw, the link doesn’t work. I was hoping it was a real website, or maybe a dating service. I wouldn’t mind deflowering some intelligent girls. I just can’t talk to stupid girls, they annoy the hell out of me.

Reminds me of the claim by feminist ‘scholar’ Luce Irigary that women perform worse than men on geometry tests due to … menstruation.

An interesting observation made but then dressed in what I felt a rather biased depiction of it. I would argue instead that it’s the shifted focus of the subject and the distraction caused as a result. The women mentioned, in this case, might be choosing to respond on a sexual level to the males involved which shifts their focus from the rational task at hand, meaning that the experience of time gained isn’t that of solving mathematics, but from engaging in a social dynamic. So it might be more accurate to say these women could end up more socially experienced rather than academically.

This article seems to say in a nutshell “Aw, poor women HAVING to respond like that, cos you know, THEY can’t help it! It must be the men’s fault for making it so hard on them to pay attention in math class!” I have qualms with such a view because it seems to depict men and women as machines who react automatically with no free will based solely on external stimuli.
