82% Of Public Schools Expected To ‘Fail’ This Year

US Education Secretary Arne Duncan

Is it that the schools will ‘fail’ the “No Child Left Behind” program or the program itself is a ‘fail’ for schools? The Raw Story reports:

In testimony to Congress Wednesday, US Education Secretary Arne Duncan made a startling claim: This year, up to 82 percent of public schools could “fail” the government’s “No Child Left Behind” standards.

“No Child Left Behind is broken and we need to fix it now,” he said, according to a transcript provided by the Department of Education.

“This law has created dozens of ways for schools to fail and very few ways to help them succeed,” Duncan added. “We should get out of the business of labeling schools as failures and create a new law that is fair and flexible, and focused on the schools and students most at risk.”

Last year, just 32 percent of schools were failing the government’s rigorous testing standards. Duncan was speaking to the House Education and Work Force Committee.

    Aren’t you glad that more of your tax money is funding those who can afford a good education and neglecting those economic pockets that can not afford it? (which is what No Child left Behind effectively does) Soon the dumbing down of America will be completely achieved, as Charlie Sheen would say- ‘Winning!’

    Aren’t you glad that more of your tax money is funding those who can afford a good education and neglecting those economic pockets that can not afford it? (which is what No Child left Behind effectively does) Soon the dumbing down of America will be completely achieved, as Charlie Sheen would say- ‘Winning!’

    And so No Child Allowed Ahead (what I’ve called it since Shrub Jr. put it in effect) is having its wanted effect: The forceful DEFUNDING of public schooling. Since the expectation is 100% success, and since anyone flunking out is defined as failing by those measures; no school will be getting federal tax dollars by the time No Child Allowed Ahead is in full force.

    And if you think our colleges suck, wait another ten years or so….

      We don’t have to wait: our colleges are already putting many students in massive amounts of debt right when they get out, and it’s even worse if you go to a for-profit college.

    Obama is good at many things, but personnel decisions is NOT one of them. From the homophobic preacher speaking at the inaugural to hiring a dip like Larry Sommers — these are not good choices.

Teachers and schools need to be empowered to do their jobs in whatever way is most fitting to their particular students and local conditions. Educators are often intelligent, creative, passionate people whose hands are tied by sleazy politicians and number-crunching bureaucrats who want to reduce their profession to bubble-scored tests and rote memorization.

    Instead of supporting our educators, we demonize them, we bust their unions, we take their pay and their funding and hand it over to Wall Street and the Koch brothers–then we wonder why our educational system is broken.

    Where to even begin…government control of schools is based under the social efficiency model and socialism; that each child will have their life path determined via the classist/racist/eugenics-based standardized tests and IQ tests. Then with their path in mind, they will be taught in the compulsory “common school” (A Prussian-style education) just what they need to know and nothing more, as anything more would not be efficient and would not fit their pre-destined path.
